Vikings trade for veteran receiver

When word broke that Vikings receiver Sidney Rice unexpectedly underwent hip surgery, we thought that the Vikings may explore trading for a certain wideout who plays in the AFC East.

But with Randy Moss of the Patriots likely going nowhere, the Vikings instead have swung a deal for Dolphins receiver Greg Camarillo.

Compensation is not yet known.  It’s believed to be a cornerback, possibly Benny Sapp.

Camarillo likely will compete with Greg Lewis for third spot on the depth chart in Minnesota.  Camarillo was the hero of Miami’s only win during a 1-15 regular season in 2007, scoring on a 64-yard catch and run in overtime.

UPDATE:  Though it’s not official yet, the deal will be Camarillo for Sapp, once finalized.

He’s no All pro, but he’s a solid WR. About the best they could do. I feel a bit better having a proven pass catcher 55 last year in camp.
See packer fans, this is how you do it. Go get a decent player when you have injuries.
TT won’t because he “improves from within”.

    Why would Miami trade him?

Camarillo is a good receiver. He’s not fast or flashy but he was perfect on 3rd down…good hands, short routes…not a deep threat like rice but he will help move the chains.

  20. Charles Wood says: Aug 25, 2010 1:17 PM

  33. VikingsPimp says: Aug 25, 2010 1:24 PM

Benny Sapp will be missed. He had a propensity for the personal foul and mental miscues, but he was a servicable player and decent guy. A little depth never hurts at WR with the bad news we have received over the last 2 weeks. GO VIKINGS!

  34. twinkletoes says: Aug 25, 2010 1:24 PM

And the price for Vincent Jackson just dropped back down a bit.
If Rice is out for half a season, Camarillo can be adequate as a short-term stopgap. They still have Harvin, as long as he can keep his migraines in relative check. It’s when Rice returns that Camarillo will be especially valuable, in third down situations.

Nice pickup Speilman. A solid reciever, coming from a running team, and playing with a subpar quarterback. Back to back 50 catch seasons. Just think what he could do with old Bret tossing him the pigskin.

  49. Hauschild says: Aug 25, 2010 1:41 PM

Camarillo didn’t have a drop in 2009? Sounds like the kinda player that’ll be right up Brett’s alley.

  50. ebr362 says: Aug 25, 2010 1:42 PM

    SlutNuts:
Good take – hadn’t thought of that, but realize when you don’t drop a ball and have 50 receptions last season, the sky is really the limit now that he’s going to an offense that understands what offenses are supposed to do.
    Dial-A-Cliche:
Disastrous? Really? Sapp is really not a very good corner. Sapp was “serviceable” at best, while Camarillo has the opportunity to be “dependable” and ultimately “productive”.

Camarillo is a lesser Brian Hartline. He was going to be 4th on the depth chart. Or depending on Patrick Turner, maybe 5th.

  65. rovibe says: Aug 25, 2010 2:04 PM

Good thing about this trade for the Vikings fans — Camarillo caught 50 passes last year with Henne and Pennington. Now he’ll be catching them from Favre, with Shiancoe, Harvin and Peterson all drawing the attention of defenders. Wouldn’t be surprised if he fits in nicely and has a real breakout season in MN. As for the Dolphins, they got a good player with Sapp. When Winfield went out with an injury last year, Sapp stepped in and played very well for the rest of the year, better than fans thought he would. Rookie CB Chris Cook has been surprising in preseason this year, and I’m sure that weighed into this decision to let Sapp go. Without that, I doubt they would have parted with him. He’s versatile, can back up different positions in the secondary, and is a young player who seems like he’s still improving. Pretty fair trade in my book.

  66. MNSportsGuy79 says: Aug 25, 2010 2:06 PM

  67. bradinthecreek says: Aug 25, 2010 2:07 PM

“Disastrous trade if it’s true. Talented cornerback of the future for a fourth receiver who was 50-50 to make the team in Miami.” — Camarillo is a young, sure handed receiver who had 50+ catches each of the last two seasons playing without an established QB. No way the Dolphins would have cut him. And Chris Cook is the reason Sapp became expendable. He’s played better than expected early on.

Good trade for Miami. Any good trade is going to involve a player of value, but Cammy is not better than Bess… probably slower, not as quick on the breaks, injury prone the last two years. Bess, Hartline, and Camarillo are all way too similar in general with both Bess and Hartline having distinct advantages (near Welker like moves and knowledge of all WR roles, more physicall, respectively).
I’m fairly certain that I would regret losing Moore who has great speed and hands and will contribute on ST (and/or even not being able to stash Wallace on the PS — I think he has even more upside than Moore but is a bit more of a project) than losing Camarillo who is going to be hard to get on the field anyway.
Good to see that Turner and the 2 rookies are developing and that the final roster is coming into shape quickly.

And that’s being generous. Before Favre came along, Rice had never caught more than 31 passes. Favre has a way of making average players look very good, i.e. Freeman, Brooks, Schroeder, Chmura. Camarillo is just as good as those guys. This is a good move, and he’ll give that prostitute bashing nickel corner of the Pack fits.

  93. Canned Heat says: Aug 25, 2010 2:49 PM

Farve’s not going to retire now, after all, he just made this trade and got Walker on the team. Next week he’ll pick up a lineman.
But seriously, it’s a credit to Spielman and Chilly that they have enough depth that they can trade someone and actually get a player worth having. No way Tice could have done that. The team was a disaster when he left.

  95. Football Jesus says: Aug 25, 2010 2:50 PM

Great move for the Vikes. Camarillo has really reliable hands, and can be a nice safety valve for Favre. Injuries slowed him down, while Hartline and Bess emerged as the #2 and 3. Patrick Turner and Marlin Moore’s solid camps have forced him out.
Meanwhile the Dolphins need all the secondary help they can get.
This should be a good trade for both.

  96. jebdamone says: Aug 25, 2010 2:51 PM

wow, good move vikes…our WR core is in trouble and i think we did a good job making two potentially very good moves at the position in walker and camarillo. sapp was decent, but would have never seen the field with the acquisition of lito sheppard, asher allen stepping up and chris cook coming in and obviously being a baller from the start. ced will be back soon as well, making out cb’s solid…wish i could say the same about our still questionable safety crew.

  97. paoconno says: Aug 25, 2010 2:55 PM

I’m not sure what definition of “good” Vikes fans are using when they talk about Camarillo. Good receivers don’t compete for the number three spot on a roster with less talent at that position than your local high school football team. When Berrian is your number one option and you add somebody who won’t even push him you didn’t add a good receiver. What you did was added another crappy guy who will wash out of the league in another year, or at best get cut by your team and then bounce around the league for a year or two before being done. Camarillo is not good, and he doesn’t really even add depth to your already crappy team.

kmartinson says: “Why is no one yelling at the Vikings for not making Rice get surgery in the off-season and for not running Harvin through tests when the season ended.” — That’s the dumbest post on this whole thread. Get up to speed on your reading. Rice didn’t tell the Vikings he was injured. He HID the injury until the start of minicamp. And Harvin? He’s been suffering migraines since he was 10 years old. He’s seen every notable specialist in the country, even visiting the prestigious Mayo Clinic. There isn’t much known about the cause of migraines, and there is no known cure.

  105. va4favre says: Aug 25, 2010 3:05 PM

This is a hopefully great move by the Vikings. I still can’t understand what Rice was thinking, but he has a sleasebag as an agent. Drew does not care about someone earning so little. Favre is tremendous at making average WRs look great, so I hope it will continue. I remember Walker having a super year with Brett, and maybe his hardships have changed him. I certainly wish him well and would love to see a Favre-Walker connection on Saturday.

  106. Percy Nugz says: Aug 25, 2010 3:06 PM

Seems like a pretty decent trade for both teams. Benny Sapp is a solid nickel corner, he sometimes gets a personal foul but he goes all out 100% on every play. And from what im hearing Camarillio sounds like a rich man’s version of Bobby Wade.

kmartinson says: “rovibe: The Vikes won’t pay Vincent Jackson $50 million and you act like they’re smart? They paid Mr. 3rd option $42 million in Berrian.” — Wow. You have the TWO dumbest comments on this thread. Jackson has only had 2 good seasons. He’ll start this season with a 3 game suspension, and is one more DUI away from a YEAR LONG suspension. Let that sink in. Berrian was more established when he signed with Minnesota, and was far above ‘average’ while in Chicago. His problem has been a string of injuries. Furthermore, Berrian isn’t a head like Jackson. You say the Vikings are stupid for not paying him $50 million? Well guess what? That must mean all 31 other teams are stupid, too. No one has given him that kind of contract. Perhaps they all know something YOU don’t. Get a clue.

Rovibe: You are a smart one which would make you a senior VP within the Vikings organization. To clarify, Rice has been out all offseason with this hip. End of discussion. I assume you know he wants a new contract. The fact is, the VIKINGS should have been doing something about it. The guy doesn’t practice because he’s hurt but the organization doesn’t look into it?
Also, for your reading enjoyment note that the VIKES have screwed the pooch. They let Favre jack them around and now they’ve put themselves in a horrible position when they are loaded and have a chance at the SB.
To add to that, they trade away a guy in the secondary that played so-so. The problem is, the secondary sucks. The Vikes had most of the pieces in place, yet, didn’t have a contingency plan for Rice nor do they have a plan for the secondary.
Lastly, is Mr. Stanford going to bail out Favre on 3rd down? I don’t see him turning into Chester Taylor. The Vikes could have gotten Westbrook.

Does it matter whether Camarillo was going to make the final cut in Miami? Should the Vikings have waited around and sat on their hands while this supposedly unfolded, then fought off other teams to sign him, should he be released? I don’t see any sense in that. If a player is available but he comes at a cost, you pay the price and move on, or you sit on your hands and hope. Which one is really the wiser of the two???
Camarillo would never have been cut, but the Dolphins aren’t overly bright when it comes to wide receivers, so who knows. Wes Welker anyone??? Can you really cut a receiver who caught 50 balls a season ago in an awful passing offense without one drop???
It’s nice Sapp played well in relief, but he is currently expendable. If Rice, in fact, does miss the entire season, this signing might be crucial down the stretch.

Both Camarillo and Sapp are solid players. They aren’t going to break games open but they also aren’t a liability. Probably a pretty fair trade for both teams assuming Miami was hurting at backup corner.
People freaking out over the Vikes WR situation should probably take a deep breath though and relax. If Harvin is ready to go, and he did practice today, then you are looking Berrian and Harvin with Camarillo in 3 wide sets and the Shank at TE and AP in the backfield.
It hurts losing Rice but it isn’t like this team is without firepower. Besides, Favre has a funny way of making whatever WR’s you throw out for him look like all pro’s. Pretty soon we’ll be talking about how crazy good Camarillo is and wtf was Miami thinking.

Good players in the Packers secondary: Nick Collins, Charles Woodson, Al Harris, Tramon Williams. Woodson and Harris actually have gotten better with age over the last couple of seasons. Who was the defensive player of the year last season?
Good players in the Vikings secondary: Winfield whose declined over the last few years. You’ve mentioned Lito Shepard. He hasn’t been a full fledged starter since 2007. The Jets wanted no tackle Cromartie and two rookies over him.
I fully admit that the Vikings have a very good front 7 but your secondary is terrible man. It isn’t considered depth when your best CB is widely known to be declining and your other 4-5 guys would be dime CB’s on the average team.

Benny Sapp on the other hand. I thought he was pretty terrible overall especially early on when he first got here. He started to do some decent things here and there last year but i’m not sad to see him go.

the vikes are actually pretty solid at cb with winfield healthy again and asher allen is looking good and cook looks like he’s gonna be really good, shepard adds depth and griffin should be back before too long.
remember, the vikes 2ndary allowed less than 200 yards passing to both tony romo and drew brees in the playoffs. i’m not gonna mention how many yards the pckers gave up to warner because that wouldn’t be polite.
the vikes safety play has been more annoying than the cb play partly cuz chili’s cover-2 is such a soft scheme, he basically just wants the safeties to keep everything in front of them. sanford is ahead of johnson on the depth chart and hopefully they’ll be more aggressive than last season.

Camarillo is not good, and he doesn’t really even add depth to your already crappy team.

you’re an idiot. judging from your post you know nothing about football and probably have never even seen camarillo play.
even your fellow cheesehead bob nelson thinks this is a steal for the vikes…and he finds a way to negatively spin every news item about the vikings.
the fact that you state the dolphins having less talent at WR than a high school football team when they now have brandon marshall is a sure sign that you’re an ignorant clown with packer blinders on.

kmartinson: Dude, you need to give up and just accept that you’re wrong. How could the Vikings have know Rice was injured if he didn’t tell them like he was supposed to? He got hurt in the playoff loss to the Saints. He didn’t tell them he was hurt until he skipped out on the minicamp.

chilly and company have proven they like to practice lies, back-channeling, and disinformation. I would not be surprised at all if “a friend” told Rice to keep his mouth shut until they got faver in camp.

Neither will the Saints. Madden curse is alive and well.

if you mean they like winning the division, beating the packers and making deep playoff runs, well yeah. but the only ones in the nfl that are pretty much known to practice back-channeling are tt and erin but what they do in private should be their business and pcker fans need to just accept them the way they are.

No, I don’t mean your fantasies. Work on your reading comprehension skills.
What I meant to say is what I said: vikings are the type of organization that would hold back info to get faver in camp. And if that happened, the emotional faver will keep stewing over that the entire season.
