LaDainian Tomlinson, Willie Parker heading in opposite directions

Friday night was Willie Parker’s chance to showcase his abilities in an upset bid for a roster spot in Washington’s backfield.  He didn’t show much.

Parker carried the ball eight times for 16 yards against the Jets.  In his defense, he didn’t have much room to run and the Redskins haven’t been able to run against anyone this preseason. Still, Parker stutter-stepped during the rare times he had any room to run.

While Parker’s career decline remains unquestioned, LaDainian Tomlinson is starting to make Jets fans believe he’s going to be a great addition.

Tomlinson rushed eleven times for 83 yards, including a 43-yard gain.  His long play was very well blocked, but Tomlinson has shown renewed burst during the preseason.  He did a few things Friday that never happened last year: he beat defenders to the corner, and he made people miss.

  1. Did I actually just read a post by Mike Florio conveyed a positive message about a Jet… LT2 no less?

  2. SD was smart to get rid of LT – this lil burst won’t last……
Basically if you eliminate the mini-monster run, he carried 10 times for 40 yards…….4 yards per carry – clearly not as spectacular as it looks if you include the 43 yard run – 7+ yards a carry…….

  3. I still have issues with Tomlinson and Greene holding up for 16+ games. They’ll look great for half of the season before beginning to wear down, giving way to injuries. They might be spent before the playoffs.

  4. We need to cut Parker, and why is LT still in game against second D haha damn we lookin nice today

  5. Not a bad game for NYJ, but not a good one either. Sanchez recovered from his INT and had a pretty good final drive, LDT and Shonn Greene looked good, but our starting D looked a little shaky. Mark Brunell and McKnight are pretty bad though. McKnight looked good returning punts again though. Don’t wanna say nothing this early though, it’s only preseason. Is it September yet?

Good analysis, Nosrenda, but do I sense you are a bit of a homer? You were far to easy on LT. Take away the 43 yard run, the 8 yard run, and for argument sake, his 15 yard run, and what are you left with? a rb who had 8 rushes for 20 yards. Now, if you want to take away from that…

  7. Too bad for LT there is no pro bowl voting for the preseason. We’ll see his entire body of work this year…I tend to think he will be mediocre and injury-prone. But who knows, I am not a hater, I hope he does well.

  8. Don’t worry, he will be either injured or whining about his young quarterback not getting him the ball by week 4.

  9. LT mite be going in the right direction but that don’t mean the Jets are…..LT will run out of gas about the same time that the Jets implode, somewhere around midseason.

  10. I’d still rather have Thomas Jones. Who wouldn’t? They would have cost the same $ right?

  11. Glad he looks good in preseason. They are gonna need both of their backs the whole season to make up for Sanchez. Sanchez can’t move the ball and score unless the 2’s and 3’s are in the game on D.

  12. Bottom line is the Jets had there 1st string out there all the way to the 4th Qtr while the redskins played there 2nd string in the 3rd qtr & 4th and still beat the Jets. But of course Rosenfag talks about any negative thing he can pull up about the redskins, Hater,,,

  13. He will be a good third down option for Sanchez’s check downs and he will be a force in the red zone. He will not have monster games rushing, but he really doesn’t need to. The Jets did OK by picking him up…he can no longer be the man but he can be a very good role player.

  14. Might have a little to do with the fact Parker was going against a tough Jets defense while LT was going against a soft Redskin defense.
There is no comparison to draw any accurate conclusions from.
I guess over-simplifying it better supports the headline.

  15. That’s great. “If you eliminate LT’s 40 yard run….” Yeah, if you eliminate Chris Johnson’s 90 yard runs last year, he completely sucked.
    Dickwad.

Um 4 yards a carry equals 12 yards every 3 plays that’s a first down every time.

  17. @StevieMo …
    Good point.
Obviously the quality of the two o-lines and d-lines makes a big difference in how well Parker and Tomlinson perform. Unfortunately, I don’t think Parker has a lot left in the tank. I’m just not altogether sure Tomlinson does either. Time will tell.

  18. LT looked really good. much faster than i thought he would be. he is definitely looking like an upgrade from thomas jones.

That is the most amazing logic I’ve ever seen used!
If I’m allowed to take Chris Johnson’s longest run from each game last year away… and not count it… he’s not nearly as impressive.
This is why you don’t make arguments with stats. If you SAW the game, you would understand what Florio is saying.
Tomlinson was running very well, hitting holes and making people miss with sharp cuts.

If you take away all of LT’s runs except the 43 yarder, he has a 43 yard per carry average. WOW

Awesome! I couldn’t have said it better myself.

  22. The absolute crime in Fast Willie’s career is that he sustained a broken leg on field turf in St Louis. When every idiot from ESPN was degrading the natural surface at Heinz Field; no one ever checked on the rate of injuries on natural grass.
In the classic Mud Bowl versus the Jets, where punts stuck into the ground during a downpour…no one was injured due to field conditions. Field turf looks nice and is easy to maintain but its no friend to the players.
Best wishes to FWP and hopes he lands a spot on someones roster.

  23. Every player burns out eventually, why all the drama. Willie Parker will still retire with two Super Bowl rings.. oh, and a Super Bowl record! in his name.
LT2 will retire with lots of fond memories of watching the playoffs from the sidelines.

The Jets aren’t making the playoffs, so it won’t matter what condition Greene and Tomlinson are in.

  25. Actually LT almost stumbled over his own feet on that supposed burst. It is all the OL opening lanes anyone could run through.
LT looked good in a preseason game last year before getting a hang nail and putting up 3.3 ypc for the rest of the season.
Watch Mathews on the other hand averaging 4+ yds/ carry behing a lesser OL running over people if the holes aren’t there. Even Dierdorf commented with all due respect LT was slipping and there is no comparison.

I am usually not one to be too confrontational on here, but that is the single most moronic analysis EVER. I hate when people say “Well if you take away this, that would have happened”

  28. @Nosredna Yeah and if you take away a few of the 1, or 0 yard rushes, his avg will go up too. The dude has looked good.
If you take away the Sanchez INT he had a much better night, too.

  29. Good Luck Willie Parker if you get cut from the skins. You were a heck of a rb for us in our 2 superbowl wins.

  30. I think we should start calling him “Flash Willie Parker.” He flashed for a year or two. That is about it.

I agree without a doubt. How much more can you take away? Tomlinson ran 11 times for 83 yards, and thats it. He hasn’t lost that much of his ZIP.

LOL, he finally had something good to say about the J-E-T-S because they finally did something good he could talk about.
In case you have missed it, Floio is an equal opportunity basher.
    Deal

  33. AJ Smith still has a job? How is that possible? How is it possible that Norv Turner still has a job? Actually, the real question is, how is it possilble in 2010 that Norv hasn’t had the acne pock marks removed?
Didja see the Bolts Saturday night? Friggin’ clueless.
FIRE AJ SMITH! FIRE AJ SMITH! FIRE AJ SMITH! FIRE AJ SMITH! FIRE AJ SMITH! FIRE AJ SMITH! FIRE AJ SMITH! FIRE AJ SMITH! FIRE AJ SMITH! FIRE AJ SMITH! FIRE AJ SMITH! PULEEZE!

No you didn’t. It was posted by Rosenthal.

  35. I agree…we should take away long runs in order to lower certain RB’s yards per carry.
Let Nosredna pick one carry to take away from each of Barry Sanders games too…this way his numbers aren’t as good. The 40 yard carries involve yardage that is not worth as much.

  36. “Um 4 yards a carry equals 12 yards every 3 plays that’s a first down every time.”
    ————————————————-
That would work if you took Sancheezy out of the equation. But you know they’ll attempt to throw a couple times.
Didn’t the Skins just switch to the 3-4 Defense this season? That could be why LT looked good, since their defense was still in learning mode and missing assignments. Just a thought.

Yay LT! I would laugh so hard if LT had a better season than Ryan Mathews.
    ————————————————–
This is the 2nd dumbest post right behind Nosredna. Assuming LT does have a better season that Matthews and you get your rocks off from it, what will that prove? That San Diego made a mistake by releasing an aging high salary player in decline and replacing him through the draft?

Actually PFT has been on the Jets nutz for the past 6 months…. Jets will NOT make the playoffs, Jets Suck and dirty sanchez will lead the league in INTs.. 5 – 11

  39. LT amazing last night!!!
Shutting up all of the naysayers, where are you now?
    T. Jones getting outplayed in KC also.
Wait, where is everyone that crucified Tanny for moving Jones and signing LT ????

  40. Yeah, he looked pretty good against a team that just switched to the 3-4 Defense. Let’s see how he does in the regular season against teams that prepare for their running game (because we all know no one will have to prepare much for Sancheezy).

  41. He sucks. Just wait til playoff time. He’ll come up with some phony injury and say he can’t play. He’s no hall of famer in my book. I have no respect for this piece of crap!

  42. He sucks. Just wait til playoff time. He’ll come up with some phony injury and say he can’t play. He’s no hall of famer in my book. I have no respect for this piece of crap!

  43. @GreenAsGrass …
I don’t have anything against the Jets–would rather see them win the division than the Dolphins or Pats. And I don’t have anything against Tomlinson. But you’re getting pretty carried away after one preseason game. You might want to wait and see how he performs playing a full game against a regular-season opponent … one that had a winning record in 09 and isn’t undergoing a complete overhaul.

  44. LT will be great due to the fact the the Jets have one of the best offensive lines in football. Just ask Thomas Jones

  45. If you take away all of the horrific knee injuries and the fact that he was slow; Dan Marino was a mobile QB lmao….

  46. If anyone saw week one last year, LT had his ankle practically ripped off. Its very possible his injury was more serious than people thought. There were many times during games when he would lower his shoulder and take the fall instead of make one of his traditional hard cuts and make a guy miss. If your ankle is bad, you don’t really go for a cut. Either way, he looks good this year, and he’ll be running behind a line that wasn’t completely torn apart by injuries.
