Favre’s 2010 deal defers only $3 million to 2011

Last year, we reported in the days after quarterback Brett Favre joined the Vikings that $8 million of his $12 million base salary wouldn’t be paid during his first season with the team. In addition to the $4 million he received on a weekly basis, $4 million was deferred into 2010, and the remaining $4 million will be paid in 2011.

This year, far less of Favre’s enhanced contract will be bumped into the future. Per a league source, his full $11.6 million base salary will be paid out in weekly game checks, which including the bye works out to $682,352.94 per week, before taxes.

But of his $4.4 million signing bonus, $3 million won’t be paid until December 31, 2011.

So here’s what Favre will show on his W-2 as income from the Vikings over the past three years.

In 2009, $4 million.

In 2010, $17 million.

In 2011, $7 million.

He’ll also reflect up to $4 million in incentives, which probably won’t be paid out until 2011, especially since they hinge in large part on the team’s performance in 2010.

And he’ll make even more from the team in 2011 (and possibly 2012), if he comes back for one more “one more year.”
