Colledge holds off Bulaga at left guard in Green Bay

When the Packers shifted rookie first-rounder Bryan Bulaga from left tackle to left guard, many assumed that Bulaga would emerge as the starter.

For now, he isn’t.

Coach Mike McCarthy announced Sunday that Daryn Colledge will line up at left guard when the Packers play the Eagles on September 12.

“We haven’t announced it [to the team] or anything, but I think it is
accurate that Daryn Colledge will be the starting left guard in
Philadelphia,” McCarthy said, which as a practical matter constitutes an announcement to the team.  “I like the production of the first line.  I
thought Bryan was improving with his opportunities there, but when you
are injured you are not part of the equation anymore.  Daryn Colledge
will be our left guard in Philadelphia.”

A hip injury derailed Bulaga’s bid to supplant Colledge; the rookie didn’t play in Thursday night’s win over the Colts.

Colledge responded to the news like Chris Farley interviewing Paul McCartney:  “Awesome.”

Baby Bulaga is nursery school compared to Colledge.

not a shock because Bulaga is a tackle, not a guard, i think he has a good future and was needed in case of injury to Tauscher or Clifton.

another in a long line of the gay vampire’s 1st round gems, following harrell, hawk and raji. first he’s not good enough to be a tackle, now he’s not good enough to be a guard. buluga would probly take a swing at mcfatboy if his arm was long enough.

  4. DSC says: Aug 30, 2010 1:29 AM

Gravy, do you watch football? hawk led the team consecutive years in tackles that was a top 6 defense both years? a little early to say anything about bulaga or raji don’t you think? harrell was a bust but seriously come on? Are you another one of the jealous of the 12 world championships the pack has? get used to it….13 might be right around the corner…

Of course the third comment here is from the 12-year old troll.
If Ted Thompson were to draft God, Gravy would advise us that he never played at a major college, was too old for the game, and wasn’t a team player.

You are an idiot, Bulaga is a very good T and Thompson drafted him for the future. He would’ve won the starting G competition if he didn’t get injured. He will only get better and better developing under Clifton, and then he will ultimately be an amazing starting LT. Another moron who uses the “his arms are too short” argument… too bad he has shorter arms than Clifton and Clifton has had a probowl career in Green Bay.

You’d think the Packers would be light years behind the superior Vikings and their superior management instead of one simple regular season game and an inability to keep a division rival out of the playoffs? All those poor decisions and ninety-percent of the teams in the league would’ve died to be 11-5 and post-season appearance last year. Yeah, huge failure all right. All that and the Packers still don’t have to win the Superbowl to stay home, didn’t mortgage the future for a desperate run at futility, and the Vikings do. Let me see….which would I prefer…you’re right…a cross-dressing coach and an over-the-hill second-guessing self-centered know-it-all quarterback with a superiority complex. Perfect fit for a shallow-minded verbal-vandal such as your self. Good luck with that.

Smart move. Let him watch and observe veterans. It will only make him a better player.
Hats off to Colledge. He took a lot of grief but manned up and earned his spot.

  9. lebowski says: Aug 30, 2010 8:13 AM

  10. JimmySmith says: Aug 30, 2010 8:18 AM

Why does anyone even bother responding to Gravy? He just wants the attention.
As to what he knows about football, consider this is the 50th year for the Vikings and what do they have on their resume? Zero Lombardi’s, 5 losses in their last 5 NFC Title games, and a 41 year old QB. Yup, after watching that BS, you could begin to understand why he is venting here.

  11. Bzilla says: Aug 30, 2010 8:26 AM

All the drunk Packer fans better hope that Kaaron Rogers takes his beating this year just as well as the last. Has one of the worst O-lines in the league really improved this year?? Only if your love-drunk for your team! Get real! If Kaaron goes down the rest of your team will go way sub-.500!!!!
The biggest curse a team could have is to have the “experts” gush all about your SB hopes! LOL!!!!

  12. green&bold says: Aug 30, 2010 8:29 AM

College played well this preseason and I wonder if it had a lot to do with fearing the bench. Bulaga will probably see reps in just about every game as the primary backup for LG and LT. He’s played well at both and maybe would’ve supplanted College if it hadn’t been for the injury. College’s problem has been inconsistency the past 2 years. I wonder if getting the hook will keep him focused.

  13. RC IV says: Aug 30, 2010 8:31 AM

How much does this guy have to suck not to be able to beat out Rita Colledge?
I’m guessing there is a reason he fell to the packers in the 1st round.
Now we are finding out why. He’s just not that good.

  14. hazi59 says: Aug 30, 2010 8:36 AM

By the end of the year, Bulaga will be playing somewhere. The odds of both Tauscher & Clifton staying injury-free are slim. Either way, he will see plenty of playing time.

  15. tHe_KiNg says: Aug 30, 2010 9:09 AM

It would be nice if people did a little research, instead of throwing out the same tired BS about the Packers “awful” offensive line.
Jared Allen had 14.5 sacks last year, 7 were against 3rd and 4th tackles for Green Bay. Clifton was out for both games against the Vikings and Mark Tauscher didn’t play until the Tampa Bay game. Once the line was solidified the Packers gave up something like 7 sacks the final 8 games of the regular season.
This year the Packers have been blitzed an inordinant number of times, yet Aaron Rodgers has not been sacked, heck he has barely been knocked down.
Meanwhile, Brent Favrt has been sacked multiple times, he’s fumbled multiple times, he’s been hit quite a few times as well. Better fix your own O-Line problems before ripping on Green Bay. As Packer fans know, having 1 hole on the line (John Sullivan) and moving around 2 or 3 guys to fix it generally does not work.

  16. Calistin says: Aug 30, 2010 9:12 AM

RCIV- Back to more fail trolling I see. Buluga has had a solid camp and will be part of that line at some point in the year, and is already starter caliber.
The Packers did give up a lot of sacks at the beginning of last year w/ Clifton out, Babre at RT, and Tauscher not coming aboard until midseason.
What most of you idiot Viking fanboys fail to realize since you know nothing outside of your own team, IS THAT, in the 2nd half of the season, that line was vastly improved.
Tauscher will be even better this year after getting back into football shape and having his knee fully recovered.
Clifton was coming off 4 surgeries last year, and this year has been healthy and looking solid, holding Freeney to no sacks, pressures, or hits on QB.
AR hasn’t been hit all preseason despite facing every blitz known to man. If one would watch the Packers line, they would definitely notice improvement over the beginning of last year. If one does not see this, one is a moron, and most likely a Viking fan.
So back to RCIV’s ignorant ravings, there was no clear cut winner, it basically came down to Bulaga tweaking his hip, and the coaches wanting him to rest it so it didn’t linger into the season.
I challenge you to present a single piece of evidence from any game you’ve watched or followed that would prove Bulaga is bad. You obviously are smarter than everyone in the NFL and the entire Packers scouting dept to say he isn’t 1st round talent…or are you just a fail troll who will say anything for a reaction, even if it’s complete rubbish???

That is a stupid thing to say…even for you. Rookie offensive linemen in the NFL are rare. The Packers O-line did pretty well during the second half of the season last year and is improved this year. Good support and back-up is available on top of no worries.

Yeah if he keeps picking guys like Rodgers, Mathews, Collins, Jennings, and Finley he will have a fast ticket to the unemployment line. Mike Sherman was so much better. They should have never gotten rid of him. His drafts and free agent record was much more stellar.

Yeah, THAT’S the mark of a truly good GM. He already would be on the unemployment line if not for the miracle ’07 season that he himself called an aberration. Disgraceful.
I disliked Sherman’s methods as much as anyone, but his teams were at least consistently competitive, and they managed more than one playoff win ever as well. Ted is a joke, and you are either a fool or a Viking fan if you support him.
