Laveranues Coles: "I think I'm done"

When we passed along the news today that the Jets have released wide receiver Laveranues Coles, we noted that it could be the end of his career.

Coles says he thinks it is.

I think I’m done,” Coles told the Star Ledger. “I don’t want to become one of those journeyman football players.  I don’t need the money.”

As a vested veteran, Coles’ entire 2010 salary will be guaranteed if he’s on a Week One roster. Coles said Jets coach Rex Ryan told him the Jets would be interested in bringing him back after Week One (and Ryan said so himself), but Coles sounds like a man who’s ready to move on.

“My spirits aren’t down,” Coles said. “I get to start thinking about life after football. I’m excited about the future. A lot of people think athletes are depressed when it comes to the end but that’s not the case with me.”

If Coles is done, the historical record will show that he played 10 NFL seasons with the Jets, Bengals, and Redskins, he was selected to one Pro Bowl, and he caught 674 passes for 8,609 yards and 49 touchdowns.

He could make a few rosters in this league. Some teams have zero quality vets at WR. The Bears and Raiders come to mind.

Wish he would have came to that conclusion last year prior to wasting a roster spot in Cincinnati.

Al Davis is on the phone with Coles trying to talk him out of retirement with a $55 million six-year deal.

Haters, don’t be a dick. Coles was a solid-to-very-good player for most of his career who handled himself with class and made the bold move of admitting to being molested as a child to help others, in an environment that doesn’t usually lend itself to such vulnerability. Give the guy the dignity he deserves.

If this is it, LC should take a bow.
He had a good career and put up numbers better than Peter Warrick (college teammante), Travis Taylor, Sylvester Morris, R. Jay Soward, Dennis Northcutt, Todd Pinkston, Jerry Porter, Ron Dugans, Dez White, Chris Cole, and Ron Dixon who were all taken before LC. Only Plaxico Burress’s numbers compare and LC is in a better spot than Plax is right now.
He was also never blessed with an above average QB in his prime: Vinny (Dinosaur); Young Pennington; Old Pennington; Younk Kellen Clemons; Pat Ramsey; Old Mark Brunell; Brooks Bollinger; Hurt for at least 5 games Favre; and Prematurely Aged Carson Palmer.
    Good Luck!

If Ryan brings him back after week #1 can he play CB?

No shame in being a journeyman type player if that’s the amount of talent you have, but Coles was a good player in his day. That day is over. And he has little to offer any team at this point.

That’s a pretty solid career considering he was Peter Warrick’s sidekick/afterthought at FSU… of course he never showed any signs of running the 4.1 40 that Bobby Bowden claimed he ran (officially he ran 4.43 at the combine).

Coles will be a starter in Cleveland by week 1, his old coach is on line one!

I hate the Jets but Coles was a warrior that sacrificed his body for that team. He deserves to go out better than this.

Numbers don’t lie…Not too bad for a guy nobody wanted after he got sold out at FSU.
Excellent career and I would have loved to see him with a Top Level QB in his prime.

As a Bengals fan, I always seemed to like LC and was excited that he was on our roster. It just never materialized. I looked like it got off to a bad start and LC put a lot of pressure on himself last year in Cincy.
Hope the best for you LC!

very good player who never got alligator arms. when he played with pennington,it took forever for the ball to get to him,by the time the ball arrived everybody playing defense had a bead on him,the guy took a beating and never bitched.
    great career.

He doesn’t need the money because he robbed Cincinnati last year..
