Peyton Manning's and Bill Polian's whining have already gotten results; the NFL's new umpire alignment rule has been suspended for the last game of the preseason. That's the first step in rescinding it altogether. It would seem, the purpose is to soften up the fans to the "Manning rule change" before the season opener.
The NFL has been changing the rules to suit Manning's game ever since he cried about the Patriot DB's holding his receivers. In my opinion, he was so influential in getting the rules changed, the NFL put his picture on the front of the Official NFL rule book the following year.
Never has an NFL player's demands been so catered to by the League than Peyton Manning's. It's been my observation that everything he's ever wanted to make himself the greatest Hall of Fame selection ever has been granted him. He got himself drafted by a team that plays under a dome. He's gotten favorable officiating calls throughout his career, in my opinion. He's had the NFL's rules changed to suit his game. And, he's been allowed to tank a final game so as to be rested for the NFC Championship.
Make no mistake, what Peyton Manning wants Peyton gets. That umpire alignment rule will be changed to suit Manning before the season opens.

YawnFlorio - the Patriots never lobbied for a rule to better protect quarterbacks - the league put that rule in themselves.
Meat Tuperello has no facts to buttress his defenses of Marino and Manning. Neither quarterback had/has any ability to elevate their game come playoff time. Montana didn't have better teams than Marino; on the contrary he was a low draft pick thrown onto a bad team with a new coach, and they built a champion. Brady was a sixth-rounder who elevated his way up the depth chart. Marino and Manning were high draft choices expected to win right away.
"Peyton owns the Ravens. He has owned the Patriots recently." You think that will last? He can thank his lucky stars for the wrong ball spot on 4th and 2. He never gets hit (this Superbowl was the first time in a while I can remember a defense actually attacking him up the middle), he's protected by the rules (so are his flimsy receivers) and he walks the tightrope virtually every game. And yet he never elevates his game in the playoffs. And when the heck did he ever suffer a broken jaw? McNair won co-MVP because he played through broken ribs, hands, everything; Brady played through a serial shoulder injury, broken ribs, and at least one hand injury. Manning has never had a broken jaw.

Mike Daly,
You are a dumb ass.
Marino was a far better quarterback than Montana, just as Manning is a far better quarterback than Brady. Montana and Brady have played on better teams and the difference certainly wasn't the quarterback.
You proved your ignorance by calling Peyton Soft. He owns the Ravens. He has owned the Pats recently. He's the toughest qb in the league missing 1 play due to an injury and that was a broken jaw. played most of the rest of that season with his jaw wired shut. I feel sorry for you.

Again, the helmet ISN'T GOING TO WORK. No helmet in the world was going to keep them from going under the knife for knee or shoulder surgery like 3 officials had to undergo last year. Even with the helmets that they wear, the typical player is susceptible to concussion so what makes you think that it's going to keep the officials from suffering them any more?
No matter what you boobs think about them, you're GROSSLY underestimating their physical conditioning because they're in a lot better shape than you think and there's not much more that that NFL can do to make it any better.
____________
Someone already replied to this, but I just thought I'd back that sentiment up. 3 officials having to get surgery for the year is NOTHING compared to the amount of players that had to get surgery due to the game. You want to be an NFL official, your going to face that possibility. It's apart of the job! If you don't like it, go get a desk job somewhere! Since when is it the NFL's job to make sure that these guys are out of the way of danger? Sure, the game shouldn't be made with the intent on injuring these guys. I don't think it ever was! Just like the rules of the game are not made to intentionally hurt a player. If they're not in shape enough to handle a few hits, they need to be replaced. Put them back in the original positions, where they belong! This affects the game way too much!

To all who comment that it won't effect a comeback at the end of a game because they switch back to the old way the last two minutes of each half. That's the point! The league even knows this new way isn't efficient, or there wouldn't be a need to go back to the old way EVER! This, is my opinion, just proves that this new placement is a bunch of garbage! If it worked, it should be able to work for the entire game! Get the old fat guys out of there, get some protective gear, and put the refs back where they belong!

---------------
The helmets will work (I also think they should use some type of armor as well, like some light-weight motocross stuff). Look what it has done for MLB. I understand what you are saying about concussions, and you would have a great point if the umpire was going into the hole to lay a lick on a RB. That is why so many PLAYERS receive concussions. And the 3 or so you said went under the knife, is drastically less than the players who go under the knife every off season. It's the same as the players, the job is dangerous.
And I don't know what games you have been watching, but the umpires are not shining examples of pure physical specimens; they are old and all gut (I'm watching replay of the Bears/ Cards game now and the umpire in this game looks like he is in his 60's). I can't remember who suggested it, but using freshly retired players for this spot would be perfect. It's a win-win. The league will get some athletic guys in a "rough" spot, and players who cannot get away from the game still have a chance to be on the field without having to hit other players.

MeatTupperello is a fool. He'd take Marino - a playoff choker - over Montana, and Manning - another playoff choker - over Brady. He claims the Colts somehow got jobbed by the refs in New England. The facts are clear -
Marino had no ability to elevate his game come playoff time. Montana always did.
Manning is soft, cannot handle hard-hitting teams, cannot elevate his game come playoff time, and needs rule changes to allow his no-huddle attack to work. Brady plays tougher and elevates his game come playoff time.
Manning is 100% wrong. Adapt to the game instead of force-feeding rules to make no-huddle offense immune to defense. Become the Brady-era Patriots, the Delhomme-era Panthers, or the McNair-era Titans, teams whose receivers weren't stopped by physical defenses.

I am no Colts fan, but these two are right about the new umpire configuration and rules. Every Nfl team that goes into a hurry up offense this year is going to potentially run in to disaster. This will lead to rage in all team fan bases as this will hit most teams during critical drives when time is short. These two may be whiners, but you watch by mid season most teams will have felt the sting of this stupid idea.
I also look forward to seeing if Vegas takes a pounding on this one, as this will most certainly affect the outcome of many games.

I get so sick of these two clowns. A rule is a rule. Every rule has opponents.
Peyton needs to stop whining. Its time to stop using tricks. Line up and play some football.
______________________________________
I agree. I personally don't like the rule but Of course if it Peyton doesn't like it its got to go.
Peyton likes to get those cheap penalties on the D by catching them substituting. This reminds me when the Pats were playing too "physical" with them and Peyton and Polian ran to the competition committee.
The rule will effect every team but the way Peyton likes to play it could effect the Colts more.
No more freebies Peyton, until they change it back for you.

I get so sick of these two clowns. A rule is a rule. Every rule has opponents.
Peyton needs to stop whining. Its time to stop using tricks. Line up and play some football.

Meat,
Your ignorant and uninformed. Go review last years SB and tell me who threw the game changing pick 6 in the 2nd half. Then name me another QB who has had 3 #1 draft picks to throw to at WR and another #1 at TE.
Joesph Addai, a great pass catcher out of the backfield, guess what another #1 pick.
Manning is good but he has had by far the best weapons of any QB.

Aids,
yeah he's the best at building a team. Buffalo, Carolina, Indy.
A team has to be good and lucky to get multiple championships.
If Kasay doesn't kick the ball out of bounds and the Pats don't get it at the 40. Tuck rule/fumble , etc. Balls have to bounce the right way and they have to get some breaks.
Pittsburgh and the officiating vs. Seattle and playing Kurt the turnover machine Warner in their recent championships.
I think Dungy held them back. I think the mistake of resting players hurt them on multiple seasons. Getting robbed in New England by officials certainly hurt them a time or two. Not making excuse. Just stating facts. DrunkenVanderchoke sent them home early in the playoffs on more than one occasion.
Sometimes the best players don't play on the best team in any given season.
None of that changes my views that Manning is the best qb to play the game. He doesn't have the rings that some have but neither does Barry Sanders....and they are the best I have seen play the positions.

Aids,
Yes the greatest in the game, or you could even go as far with Manning as to say the greatest QB to ever play the game.
I'd take Marino over Montana, and Manning over Brady..
Terry Bradshaw's 4 rings proves rings don't define the greatness of an individual position.
____________
But you also said Polian is the best. If you have the best guy making your team, and the best QB leading your team....where are the championships? Why only 1? Where's the total falloff? Is Dungy the worst coach in the history of the league?

So, you think that the NFL reverting back to the old rule in the last two minutes shows that the NFL knew that there was a problem. Well, you couldn't be more wrong and I have to wonder how much football you've watched if you think that.
Seriously, the last two minutes of a half and of the game can't be any more different if they were Jerry Jones and Art Rooney and those 4 minutes are COMPLETELY different for each team, even one that is playing a hurry up offense.
The first half is a wild scramble for BOTH teams, even if one is ahead by a lot. They will be try to get in points before the half and if they have all their time outs, they'll be able to go over the middle (and use the umpire as a pick) but they'll also try to save them for a final play and they'll end up throwing more balls to the side and the umpire isn't usually in danger of being run over then. They're also going be throwing more of their passes over the middle BEHIND the umpire because they don't want to waste time dinking and dunking their way down the field and having to waste a down with a spike or a time out to stop the clock (If they're going to waste a down with a spike, it will more to their advantage for them to do it after a 20 yard completion and not one that went 5 yards).
The second half is completely different. If a team is ahead by a lot, they'll spend time trying to run it to force the other team to use their time outs and then they'll take a knee and if their opponent doesn't have a time out left, they'll go to a knee after a first down. Unless these teams are tied, only one of the teams is going to be trying to score and if they're down by a substantial amount, they're going to be going down the field more and the umpire won't be in as much danger.

Hurry up offenses in the last 2 minutes to get a score is part of the game.
Hurry up offenses that are used throughout the game are simply looking for a cheap way to get a penalty or exhaust a defense that is already at a disadvantage because of the pro-offense changes to the rules. Right now the defense works twice as hard as the offense and should have time to sub players between plays.
Manning is whining because his whole offense is predicated on keeping the same defense out there so he can pick the same weak link apart. A real man wouldn't be scared to go up against the best and beat them no matter what the rules are.
