LT got a big extension, he made $5M last year. He was cut. Junior and Rodney wouldn’t renegotiate their bloated contracts to match their declining play and were released the same. They both signed with NE for $Ms less. Brees was offered a performance based contract from SD but signed with NO for a longer term deal coming off of shoulder surgery. The year before he made 8+M on the franchise tag.
Merriman is making $3M this year still coming back from ACL surgery.
So what are you talking about? The players all left for their own reasons which is business. The SDUT is usually partial also.

Vincent Jackson and Derelle Revis have the same agents. Both are holding out. Coincidence? I think not. In the future, some GMs will be avoiding players in the draft who sign with those agents. It’s a shame how some greedy unreasonable agents screw up the careers of players who believe their crap.

1. It’s a poorly written, barely readable, marginally informative article. If that’s the Union-Tribune standard for journalism, it’s a wonder their subscribers don’t regularly “sue” for fraud and/or impersonating a newspaper.
2. Articles don’t infer. Readers do.

I’m pretty sure that Philip Rivers’ deal and, more recently, Antonio Gates’ deal contradict that notion.
San Diego has a problem offering big contract extensions to players that might not be worth it.
Junior Seau was traded in 2003, after a season in which he posted career-low numbers and had injury problems with his ankle.
Rodney Harrison was released the same year, and while it mostly was due to clear up salary cap space, the year before he only had two interceptions and missed three games due to injury.
Drew Brees destroyed his shoulder right before his contract expired, and most doctors predicted he could never regain form. San Diego actually did offer him a very lucrative deal, 5-years/$50 million, but it was almost all incentive based. Brees wanted more guaranteed money. The deal he signed with New Orleans (6-years/$60 million) averaged out to what he could have made in San Diego, seeing as most of the incentives in their offer were based on games played.
Tomlinson received a huge extension after his rookie deal (I don’t know the exact numbers but prior to restructuring in 2009, he was due to make $24 million from 2009-2011.) Everyone saw how poorly he performed the past two years; it’s nonsense to suggest he was worth the money they were paying him when it happened.
Merriman will not get a big deal done until he proves he has recovered from his injuries and that he can still be an effective player without taking steroids, neither of which he has done. I can guarantee that if he goes out and has a 10+sack season with 100+ tackles, he is going to get a deal consistent with other top-tier linebackers.
I am begging all of you, PLEASE stop suggesting that San Diego doesn’t know what it’s doing with it’s players if you don’t follow them extensively enough to know what’s what; there is more than enough history to prove they do.

Mr. Saban and now Mr. Florios conjuring up the imagery of a pimp/prostitute to describe the relationship between, what always seems to be an African-American Athlete and his agent, is offensive and stereotypical; not to mention it seems to indicate an ignorance that is jaw dropping.
You do realize that the agent WORKS FOR THE ATHLETE. It seems that these two, and ALL of those 3rd shift workers that will surely rebut this post, can’t for the life of them see a young Black man as a successful businessman…….and BOSS!!

So, the same reporter also said that Jackson was asking for the 5 years, 50 mil. His agent said that was a lie too but the lawyer doesn’t mention it.
This makes me think the story about his contract demands was bang on.

Jackson was arrested for DUI twice.
He was speeding to a regular season game and driving without a license. Vehicle was towed.
I think he is doing a good enough job on his own of making himself look bad.
