The Raiders (and a lot of other teams) said Jamarcus Russell was the best QB in the draft…Just because some moron says it does not make it true. Rex was trying to pump up his team…as is the case with most of his comments. Nobody can make a case for a DB to make as much as Revis wants. Paying Revis that much money is as big a mistake as what the Raiders did with “purple drank” Russell. Revis is a good player…not a great player. He is already making good money and the self-righteous morom threw away $20+M because he wantyed more. I have no pity for him. A decision like that points to his inability to see things objectively. He deserves to sit out, get fined every day, continue to pay his agents, ruin his career, and wonder “what could have been” for the rest of his life.

If he’s just a good player, why did his coach call him the best defensive player (or was it just best player) in the league? The Jets made their bed, now they need to lie in it. If you call a guy the best, REPEATEDLY, you can’t be surprised when he wants to be paid like the best.

Very well put. I believe they will reamain at an impasse. Revis’ “people” (his uncle more than his agents) have him convinced that he “only” misses out on a million this year by holding out, and forces a trade to get some value. Ripe for a rich dirtbag like Snyder to be whispering that kind of crap in his ear. Maybe hoping to somehow get free under a new CBA, if it happens.
Jets rely on the fact he has three more years he is contracted for, want to pay him something fair, but are not going to make an exception for a crazy contract, and go down that slippery slope already created by the foolish Asoughma contract.
A line in the sand has been drawn, and I fear no one will cross it. Revis’ pride/uncle/advisors will prevent him from looking like he “caved”, though I still fail to see how a fair contract is caving. Sucks for football fans, not just Jets fans.
No one answered my question, maybe you know, Florio…would Revis have two years left, or three, if he holds out?

if revis thinks he’s as great as he and everyone says he is, he should sign an incentive laden contract that says you have to play X snaps, make the pro bowl, make the AP all pro team, have X ints, have X tackles, etc. he knows he’ll never have as great a year as last which is why he’ll hold out. the jets would be stupid to blink first.

But if he wants to hold out for this insane amount of money then the Jets should let him sit for the remaining “3″ years of the contract. good article at nyjetscap.com regarding mangold’s contract, and while the contract’s not fully guaranteed, its structured to be highly prohibitive for the jets to cut him within the first 3 years, where he’ll bank $22+ million.
My guess is the Jets want to do this kind of deal with Revis, but his side want’s a more traditional guaranteed upfront and funded deal. Problem is, you really aren’t seeing those kinds of deals happen. It will be interesting to see if Brady or Manning gets a deal before week 1 and how its structured.

If he holds out this season, sits out the next, what kind of money does he expect to earn?
Honest Opinion, after this past friday’s game, Revis will be back with a one year large signing bonus to make him play this season. If not, the week one and two tickets I bought, might mean a rough two weeks!

Are you really that uninformed. First off, I’m not a Raiders fan, but at the very least, you’d have to say that Asoughma falls in the “close” category. QBs go out of their way to not throw the ball in his direction, and he locks down his receiver without much help (everyone, including Revis, has safety help from time to time). Oh, and he’s been doing it for years, while Revis has only played at that level for one year. So, as for no one being even close, that’s just wrong.
You also seem to be forgetting that the lack of a salary cap is for this year only. As soon as there is a new cba, there will be a new salary cap. So, overpaying any one player to this degree could leave them in salary cap trouble when it comes back into effect. FYI, the Jets are already would be above the salary cap if it were in place. Seeing as how the owners are looking to give the players a lesser share of the revenue, I don’t think the salary cap will be increasing. Unless they have to increase the size of the rosters when they go to an 18 game regular season of course. Even then, they won’t have more money to spend on one player. You’re also completely ignoring issues such as operational funds and cash flow. There’s a big difference between a team’s value and their liquidity. Not to mention, the Giants are the ultra-valuable franchise. The Jets are the red-headed stepchildren of NY athletics when it comes to revenue production. If you don’t believe me, check how quickly the Giants sold their PSLs, and how long it’s taking the Jets to do the same. The Jets just invested a lot of capital into that new stadium, so they’re probably not too cash rich right now. Giving Revis the kind of contract he wants (with huge guarantees and signing bonus) could put a serious dint in the Jet’s operational funds given their stadium investment. Finally, if the success or failure of a team’s defense truly depended entirely on one player, then they’re already an average defense. Is the Jets defense better with Revis? Of course, but they can still get the job done without him. The real problem for the Jets is their offensive production. Revis can’t help with that.

This guy is worth an extra win or two over the course of the season. What he does against top-tier passing games shouldn’t be understated. Without Revis shutting down Moss last year, the Jets lose that first game against the Patriots.
So they need to pay this guy, or their 8-8 season could quickly spiral down to 6-10.

The only numbers in football contracts that matter are the guaranteed ones. Everything after year 3 that is not guaranteed is fluff for the media and the agents.
If the Jets are unwilling to guarantee any of the money then why would Revis even consider signing a new deal.
Revis is being punished according to the terms of the CBA. He is fined daily for missing work and will lose game checks starting week 1.
They can make up whatever numbers they want 10 years 160m, but it is all about the guarantees the rest is just numbers to get everyone all worked up.

It is a shame Revis seems to be a puppet for Gilbert, who by any account was not a team player. And it’s well documented how much of a bust he was after the big contract, so he hurt both his Skins and Carolina teammates with his actions.
It reminds me of the camp for the 85 Bears. They had been to the championship game the year before and had a chance to be special (sound familiar?). But Todd Bell and Al Harris, two starters on defense, held out. They were replaced and missed a chance to have a ring.
QUESTION: I know he misses and accredited season, but if he holds out all year, does he only have two years left on his deal, or does the whole contract “shift” and leave him with 3 more years. Would be nice to get this kind of info.
