OR, it’s because when the Raiders have a big bust, IT’S FROM A TOP 5 OVERALL PICK. People like to crap on the team because they’re used to piling sh*t on sh*t.
Al Davis losing his fastball (I assume you were making a metaphor in relation to his mind)…JaMarcus Russell and DHB off top of my head. Drafting in top 10 (a few top 5s) year after year.
Dysfunction…Tom Cable punching an assistant; Lane Kiffin being followed aroung by ESPN for weeks after word getting out of Sloth firing him; Richard Seymour trade; Big Al requiring JaWalrus to play.
Drafts his own guys despite what the experts think…Didn’t Sloth draft JaWalrus despite what coach Kiffin wanted?

Some of you guys are idiots. Phonz will make the team. So will Thompson and Cox. Hill won’t be cut either. Phonz hasn’t lived up to where he was selected but he’s still learning to play the ot. As far as him having 3 fingers, he lead the ACC in INTs over a career. Denvers first team HAS loomed very solid in the preseason. They got beat by Detroit but had 18 players out and most of them starters…still had a bunch of starters out and pounded on Pitt (up 17-3 w starters in) and still had a bunch of starters out. Regardless, wins and losses don’t matter in preseason, but how your first team looks is telling. Denvers has looked good. Phonz will be fine and it’s FAR too early to call him a bust.

This is the problem with guys like McDaniels. They feel like that have something to prove all the time so they try to outsmart everyone by making huge gambles that they think will pay off (i.e trading the top two offensive playmakers away within one year of receiving the HC job, trading 1st round pick for Smith, drafting Tebow in round 1 as a huge reach, etc.). He just ends up screwing himself over. These are the moves that could set back his career and completely uproot the Broncos organization. At this point it’s safe to say McDaniels can never be an average coach. He will either be really good because his gambles work out, or he could be horrendous and everyone will blame him for destroying the Broncos.
New Eagles GM Howie Roseman looks like he’s following a similar path.

How about a swap of 2nd round players?
Denver gets Alan Branch
Arizona gets Alphonso Smith.
Seriously though, Alphonso Smith will remain with the Broncos.
Coach McDaniels did say, “the best players will play.” That doesn’t automatically mean Smith gets cut.
Currently, Denver has to make a decision on Elvis Dumervil and Darryl Reid.
Placing either of these two on IR or PUP opens an extra spot or two.

Quick – name five 2nd round draft picks from last year…..
Who cares.
In the NFL, it’s about wins and losses. An 8-8 season may be terrific for teams like Oakland and KC….but all of you are right. 8-8 won’t cut it long-term in Denver.
We’ll see what happens.

Smith has actually had a solid preseason. More likely, the Nate Jones era in Denver is drawing to a close. Darcel McBath offers the same versatility as Jones with considerably more upside.
You really have to take Krieger with a grain of salt. This is the guy that redundantly argued against Cutler’s credentials as a ‘franchise’ QB right up to the moment that Cutler was traded. Then, all the sudden, Cutler was thrown into the Johnny Unitas pot. Ditto Brandon Marshall. Krieger has become a predictable one-trick pony– and he is very good at capitalizing on the hot-button issues. Currently, here is no hotter or more divisive button in Broncoland than Alphonso Smith…Kyle Orton’s play in camp has seen to that.

While I agree that Xanders is the personnel dude and McDaniels is the coach, let’s not be so foolish as to think that Josh doesn’t have roster say especially around draft time.
Josh didn’t get some email or text saying:
“Hey Josh, we just traded a first round pick to get Alphonso Smith. I know you may not dig him but I do (no homo)! So draft him! LOL – BX. ”
It was just as much Josh’s call and just as much his mistake for not getting what was expected out of this guy.
If Carter didn’t get hurt, Smith would be cut for sure. Cox and Thompson are much better players right now.

I dont think the guys that Denver has been drafting lack talent. The problem is that the coach does. I’d like to see a young guy like Smith get a shot under a coach who actually has a clue and see if he can become a servicable player. My guess is, he could.
