It took a little longer to announce than you might expect, but the NFL has suspended Saints defensive line coach Travis Jones for 30 days without pay for his role in a real estate scam.
Jones pleaded guilty to federal conspiracy charges in connection to a mail fraud scam that netted him $86,000 back in June. He admitted to make false statements on loan applications and other documents in order to get mortgage loans. The scam cost lenders millions of dollars and Jones is now now cooperating with authorities.
“Coach Jones has accepted responsibility for his actions and has
cooperated with the investigation of this matter and will also be
participating in a program to educate others in the league about his
experience,”Saints G.M. Mickey Loomis said in a written statement.
The suspension began immediately so Jones should be eligible to return to the team at the end of September.
