Report: Saints finagle Derek Fisher for September 9 pregame speech

b2037f_DerekFisher_07132010.jpgAs the Saints prepare to embark on the defense of their first-ever NFL title, they’ll reportedly be relying on a guy who knows a thing or two about repeating.

The folks at TMZ report that Derek Fisher of the L.A. Lakers will address the Saints on September 9, before they face the Vikings in the first game of the 2010 regular season.  (On NBC.)

Fisher supposedly will be talking to the Saints about the challenge of winning two titles in a row.

Frankly, we think it would make even more sense to invite to the locker room a guy who once won two titles in a row not once but twice while playing football.  He’s also a Louisiana native.

And, last time we checked, he was, you know, not dead.

Fisher can deliver a good speech. He had to go through that ordeal with his daughter and such and still plays at a high level.
That said, it’s the NBA, the worst sports league in the world. Who the F cares about the NBA?

Bradshaw likely doesn’t even remember the 70s!

Frankly, I think it would make even more sense to invite to the locker room a guy who actually led the team to their back to back titles and not someone who merely rode the coattails.

They should have Tiger speak since he won back to back to back Majors.

  6. cusoman says: Aug 31, 2010 9:44 AM

Ugh. Looks like I won’t be tuning in for the pregame festivities, sounds like there will be a lot of self congratulations, and typical “overcome” sports type speeches that we’ve heard a million times.
Please just let there be football.

  7. ViqueenTears says: Aug 31, 2010 9:45 AM

Florio, only you would write a story like this. First off, why is it “finangling” for the Saints to have invited Fisher, who obviously accepted the invitation, to speak to the team? My guess is, no matter who speaks to the team on September 9th…they’ll be more than ready to show the world, once again, that they are the dominant team in the NFC now!

Anyone whose actually heard Terry Bradshaw speak would never let him address their team. Only bad things could happen.

So can we assume Kobe turned down the saints?

    I agree Florio..Why not Bradshaw?

  13. PittsburghSteelerz says: Aug 31, 2010 9:52 AM

Yeah, Terry Bradshaw will be giving the Saints a pregame speech any day now…
Next, Magic Johnson will be giving the Miami Heat a pregame speech.
Smoking something you found in those WV hills, Florio?

  14. weswelkerspornstash says: Aug 31, 2010 9:54 AM

Nice Florio. Is TMZ your favorite show.Good job reporting.
Nobody wants to hear TB give motivation speech. He would loose his train of thought halfway through, completely loose the and there would go our season

  15. buttondown says: Aug 31, 2010 9:56 AM

As much as Terry Bradshaw may sound like a logical choice as an inspirational speaker, as a member of the media covering the NFL he should at least TRY to appear impartial, even though anyone who saw the Superbowl coverage knew who he wanted to win. (“Under the weather,” my ass. The “weather” was a hurricane. He had four.)

It won’t be on TV. The Saints have had many people come speak to them before games – Avery Johnson, Ronnie Lott, John Gruden -none were on TV.

  17. Broohaha33 says: Aug 31, 2010 9:58 AM

Terry Bradshaw giving a speech would be like a guy with polio trying to dance.

  19. Dome Patrol says: Aug 31, 2010 10:06 AM

Yeah they already had Mark Schlereth speak you freaking moron. Florio, you should actually find out what you’re talking about before you try to report of it. IDIOT.

  20. Ralph says: Aug 31, 2010 10:07 AM

I think they should have one of the Lucky Dog vendors give a rousing speech about how hard it is to have back to back nights in the French Qtr.

  21. MACHINE GUN IBIZA says: Aug 31, 2010 10:08 AM

Anyone who follows the Lakers knows that Fisher is the guts of that team and it’s spiritual leader. He’s most definitely qualified to discuss back to back titles as he has done it twice and (unlike Bradshaw) can still remember his kid’s names and has all his teeth.

  22. Borf says: Aug 31, 2010 10:13 AM

Hey Florio. Terry Bradshaw is dead. You told me so yourself. You shouldn’t joke about a dead guy like that. And I actually thought you had some class…

  23. Hailskinzz says: Aug 31, 2010 10:13 AM

I’m a Lakers fan but why in the fuc would they have a basketball player announce this? This makes absolutely no sense at all, and why Derek Fisher and not Kobe?

  24. Paracelsus says: Aug 31, 2010 10:16 AM

Maybe Terry can explain how to lead his average offense while having the best defense in history to back him up. That is, if he can connect thoughts without stumbling. As Hollywood Henderson said of him… “he can’t even spell CAT if you spot him the C and the T.”

  25. Sociofan says: Aug 31, 2010 10:23 AM

Terry did a promo spot for us one time. When I saw it for the first time, I realized I could never take him seriously anymore. He’s funny, he’s good at what he does, but I’m not sure he could “inspire”.

  26. rbais2 says: Aug 31, 2010 10:27 AM

Mocking Derek Fisher is a complete disgrace!!!
This is the most honorable person playing in a league that has a bad rap for having players who “play for the money”.
This guy’s daughter had a tumor in her eye and he could only get her quality treatment in New York or Los Angeles.
So he forfeited his contract with the Utah Jazz and took less for his daughter’s sake. More people should talk about this man’s adversity and what he did to overcome it. This guy is truly not worth mocking at all!!!!

  27. BostonISaChraphole says: Aug 31, 2010 10:28 AM

I loved the ‘”REPORT:” to begin the headline like this is huge breaking news. Nobody cares about pregame inspirational speeches. Neither do the players that have to be bothered to listen to them.
The Saints will win 9 games this season. They will not be a factor.

  28. Rex Grossman says: Aug 31, 2010 10:41 AM

Yeah I’m sure the Saints will be blown away and inspired by the presence of Derek Fisher.
Fisher: “……and if you accomplish this within yourselves, you will win as many championships as your will desires. Thank you.”
    New Orleans Saints: (Standing Ovation)
Drew Brees: I’VE NEVER BEEN SO INSPIRED IN MY LIFE!

  29. mbbrazi says: Aug 31, 2010 10:44 AM

Why would an NFL team want an NBA player to give any kind of speech? Maybe someone from the armed forces if they can’t find an NFL player (which is hard to understand because there’s quite a few). Heck, they might as well have gotten a hockey player?

  30. Dial-A-Cliche says: Aug 31, 2010 10:47 AM

  31. karlieanne says: Aug 31, 2010 11:18 AM

I’m a huge Laker fan and huge Vikings fan…which is why I think it’s hilarious that the Saints opening speech will be given by a Laker’s player…given that the team used to be the MINNEAPOLIS LAKERS. Bring it, New Orleans. You can try, but you can’t get rid of ‘sota.

  34. scra22 says: Aug 31, 2010 11:41 AM

Nice choice of words in the headline, by the way:
    fi·na·gle: Verb
    1. Obtain (something) by devious or dishonest means.
    2. Act in a devious or dishonest manner.
Please explain how Fisher was obtained by devious or dishonest means, Florio.

Why does riding someone else’s coattails give you knowledge about repeating?

  36. ViqueenTears says: Aug 31, 2010 12:04 PM

  40. sand0 says: Aug 31, 2010 12:51 PM

Saints seem awfully concerned about their team keeping up its level of intensity. The Gregg Williams and Sharper public comments thrown out. Now a Derek Fischer speech.
Can’t necessarily say they’re doing the wrong thing or anything like that but it seems unusual for a team to publicly do so much worrying about their team playing hard.
Maybe they just anticipate the Vikings coming to town and playing with some hardcore intensity that they fear they can’t match, much like the NFC Champ game where the Vikes pummeled them while giving the game away on self inflicted turnovers (perhaps caused by being overly amped up actually come to think of it)

  41. Vee says: Aug 31, 2010 1:05 PM

I have to say, Florio writes some really weird stuff – especially in regards to anything having to do with the Saints. He either just plain hates N.O. and loses all credibility which makes him incapable of writing objectively, or he’s really just plain weird. Then again, maybe its both.

  42. PurplePeopleBeaters says: Aug 31, 2010 1:13 PM

Derek Fisher should give the Viqueens a pregame speech, after all he’s more qualified than Chilly to motivate a team.

Sean Payton has had guys come in to do speeches for the team since he took over in 2006. This has nothing to do with “worrying” about keeping up the intensity. This is pretty much old hat for them.

Fisher, really? No Kobe, Gasol, etc? I mean to go basketball is one thing but to go with him of all guys makes no sense. I guess they didnt want Bradshaw cause the NFL has changed since his days? I dunno, sounds like the only plausible explanation unless he flat out rejected them

    Florio,
Not to piss on your parade, but… Derek Fisher won back-to-back-to-back titles in 2000-2002, then back-to-back titles again in 2009-2010.
And as has been mentioned several times already, he’s a hell of a lot better as an inspirational speaker than Terry Bradshaw.
The Saints aren’t looking for someone to talk to them about X’s and O’s (and if they were, Bradshaw wouldn’t be the best choice anyway). They’re looking to get fired up, and there’s plenty about Derek Fisher and his story that can do that.

Your QB is hurt STILL, your #1 Wr is out and Harvin can’t stop smokin that sweetish cheeba to relieve his headaches. While were already in midseason form….. FYI you’re not even the best team in your division. The packers would stomp y’all right now if y’all played this week. If I could play Ms. Clio I see in the Vikes future no playoff appearence cause Farve ankle won’t make it that long and T Jax is ya backup… Psssstttt…. Goodluck
