Bills say they haven't "discussed" Leinart

Earlier today, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported via Twitter (this is where we’d made the crack about it maybe being a hoax, but we’re already getting tired of that one) that three teams have talked about trading for Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart, who finds himself on the block after losing his starting job for the second time since 2008.

Schefter says that the Bills, Giants, and Raiders have “discussed” the possibility.

The Bills now say, via their official website, that Schefter’s report is “erroneous.”  (But they’ve refrained from calling him a “false rumor monger”.  Or a doodyhead.  For now.)

“ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on his twitter account that the Bills
were one of three teams that have discussed trading for Arizona QB Matt
Leinart along with the Raiders and Giants.  That report is erroneous,” writes Chris Brown of BuffaloBills.com.

“Buffalobills.com has confirmed that the Bills have not had any
discussions with the Cardinals
in regards to Matt Leinart and aren’t
anticipating any in the future.  The report is simply not true.”

But here’s the key.  Schefter didn’t report that the Bills have talked to the Cardinals.  Schefter reported only that the Bills have discussed it internally.  Perhaps they have, and perhaps they decided against it.  Or perhaps the Bills don’t want to spark a clamor in the locker room or the media or the fan base for or against the move until the Bills can decide whether to make the move.

Either way, we’re rarely inclined to accept at face value the things an NFL team says when strategic interests are involved.  And we believe that the Bills are adding details to Schefter’s report that he never reported in the first place.

UPDATE:  Maybe the Bills aren’t adding details, after all.  Though Schefter’s tweet didn’t say that the Bills had talked to the Cardinals, his ESPN.com report says that they did.  And given that he’s reporting that three teams have talked to the Cardinals, it’s possible that the Cardinals are putting out bad info in the hopes of conjuring a market for a guy that, possibly, no one wants.

In 2007, Schefter reported the Jaguars were interested in Jake Plummer because of his close ties with Dirk Koetter from his days at ASU. The problem was that Plummer never played for Koetter at ASU and Schefter’s “scoop” was total BS.

Gotta love the, the teams will deny EVERYTHING. Next post will be that the Bills dealt a 4th rd pick for Leinfart.

His agent has to float multiple teams. Anyone that gave up anything for Matt at this point is an idiot. What is he, a 3rd stringer? Isn’t that role supposed to be held for someone with PROMISE and potential. I’m pretty sure he has neither.

The Bills should be internally discussing why they passed on Jimmy Clausen numerous times.
Their qbs suck, but is leinart the answer? Then again, i’d probably throw a 7th rounder to take a chance on the guy. Can’t be worse than anything they have

Schefter is the master at making stuff up, twisting a few words to put a spin on a rumor, and trying to sell it as hard fact.
    He’s perfect for ESPN.

What, you mean the same Schefter who is reporting this morning that Byron Westbrook has been released when Rick Maese & sources say not true? Whoops, looks like just confirmed. Still on the team.

No one will be more relieved to hear this than Matt Leinart.

As a matter of fact, I’m rarely inclined to accept anything that Florio or his minions post unless it can be backed up by MULTIPLE sources!

That goes without saying, no need to discuss.

Once again, Mike Florio is FABRICATING information on this website. He passes along information from Twitter without verifying the information. Even after being informaed that the information is not true, he continues to fabricate.

  14. tkebean says: Sep 1, 2010 9:56 AM

Schefter wrong? The real story should be when one of Schefter’s scoops turns out to be accurate. About 1 out of 10 of Schefter’s reports/scoops turn out to be real. Anytime I’m reading an article and he’s the source…i just assume the opposite is true and skip to the next article.

Of course that is what happened. That’s why Adam Schefter is so popular with coaches and gets such great access.
Coaches and GM’s know that if they want to get something out there exactly the way they want it, just call Schefty. Want to float a rumor about a player? Just call Schefty. Want to deceive someone about who you are thinking about drafting? Just call Schefty. Want other teams to believe that you are completely happy having two inexperienced back ups to your wildly inconsistent starter (as in Arizona)? Just call Schefty.
He won’t question you. He won’t check other sources. Schefty will just grab a mike, go live, and say exactly what you want him to say.
It was hilarious this morning when Golic actually had the audacity to question the logic of what Schefty was saying- that the Cardinals would dump Leinart and have John Skelton and Max Hall as their only alternative to Anderson. Schefty almost came unglued.

That’s two erroneous tweets from Schefter this morning. When do you go on 1067 the Fan to get on your soapbox? I can’t believe you kill Tebow for a holier than thou stance and you are the worst offender.

  17. Arias says: Sep 1, 2010 9:58 AM

So basically your whole report doesn’t make any sense because you didn’t check Schefter’s actual report, just read it off a tweet….
    Great reporting as usual Florio.

Schefter’s Tweet: “Three teams have discussed trading for QB Matt Leinart — Bills, Raiders, Giants. Now we wait to see if any pull trigger by this weekend.”
Florio Quote: “Schefter didn’t report that the Bills have talked to the Cardinals. Schefter reported only that the Bills have discussed it internally. And we believe that the Bills are adding details to Schefter’s report that he never reported in the first place.”
Where did Schefter report only that the Bills have discussed it internally????
I believe that PFT and Mike Florio are adding details to Schefter’s report that he never reported in the first place.
Either way, I’m rarely inclined to accept at face value the things Adam Schefter says when anything is involved.

    What a joke!

Why would the Bills want any part of Leinart? Trent Edwards has completely outplayed Chad Henne and Mark Sanchez, in terms of completion percentage, TD/int. ratio and QB rating, despite playing behind a much worse offensive line. It seems that Miami and the NY Jets should be fighting over the chance to upgrade their pathetic starting QBs by going after Leinart. Well, just one more reason why the Bills will not finish last in the AFC East.

Geeze why would anyone object to the team trading for a total and utter bust ?

  22. ejtowne says: Sep 1, 2010 11:21 AM

It was just disscussed this morning on another post that some of the “media greats”, thought the Bills were stupid for passing on Leinhart when he was drafted. Who looks stupid now? Yes, those few “media greats”. The Bills aparently were smart to stay away from Leinhart the first time around, so why would they ever take another look? Schefter is a clammering idiot. Half of the stuff he posts is “erroneous.” Take a look back at the Westbrook thing.

Instead of posting the same thing over and over, this team sucks, that team sucks, i hate you, that guy sucks. Why don’t you make a contribution to the site by posting something of value. Can you do that? Do you have it in you not to cuss or use the word suck? By the looks of your other posts, that will be a negative captain. Especially you mamatried, I have never seen a decent disscusion other than your normal childish words. Go Bills!

Leinart reportedly told the Cardinals that if they trade him to Buffalo he was going to finally see Niagara Falls. Albeit, from inside in a barrell.

“The Bills should be internally discussing why they passed on Jimmy Clausen numerous times.”
    Jimmy Clausen? Really?
1st – Everybody passed on him. Twice. Here’s why:
    2nd – J. Clausen:
    3 games – 21/42 for 231 yds, No TD’s, 2 int’s, 2 fumbles for a QB rating of 46.8
    3rd – T. Edwards:
    3 games – 24/37 for 304 yds, 2 TD’s, 1 int, 0 fumbles
for a QB rating of 97.1
…and I don’t think anybody will make the argument that Trent is on a better team. :P
