Cardinals locker room buzzes about possible Leinart trade to Giants

We mentioned in our most recent post that, of the three teams linked to Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart, only the Giants have not publicly denied the report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

And there could be a good reason for the silence.

We’re told that the Cardinals locker room currently is buzzing with a rumor that Leinart will be traded to the Giants.  It’s unclear whether there’s any truth to the rumor, but it is true that the Cardinals’ locker room is buzzing with a rumor that Leinart will be traded to the Giants.

This is one of those instances where we rely on the audience to understand what we are and aren’t reporting.  When sharing rumors in this space, we label them as rumors.  For now, this is only a rumor.  But it’s a rampant rumor in the Cardinals’ locker room.  Whether it comes to fruition remains to be seen.

That said, we’d be shocked if the Giants do the deal without getting Leinart to reduce his 2010 and/or 2011 salary.  We’d also be surprised to see Leinart agree to reduce his salary when he can, if he so chooses, dig in his heels and try to force a release, so that he could then pick his next team.

Then again, if he truly wants to be a starter, his next team could be in the UFL.

Florio, I swear–one more off-handed reference to the Mike Wise story and I will boycott your site for the rest of the season. Other sites will suit my needs just fine if all you desire is to annoy me as a reader.

If I was him I’d stick to my guns……he’s a joke right now, if he takes less money elsewhere as the backup, he’s a bigger joke.

Right through the very heart of it – New York, New York
I wanna wake up in a city that doesn’t sleep
And find I’m king of the hill – top of the heap
These little town blues, are melting away
I’ll make a brand new start of it – in old New York
If i can make it there, I’ll make it anywhere
It’s up to you – New York, New York

I want to wake up in a city that never sleeps
And find I’m a number one, top of the list

The Cardinals needs to bring in a QB that can come in a get a handle on the offense in short order.
Troy Smith in Baltimore plays in the same offense with slight terminology variations. According to Anquan Boldin.
He’s a leader has all the tools including the intangibles and remember had it not been for an illness that kept him out several weeks ‘big contract Flacco’ had not out-played him for the starting job.
Several players on the team feel the same and say he is probably the most athletic player on the team.

  16. DC_Bengals_Fan says: Sep 1, 2010 3:21 PM

If the Cardinals are smart they’ll realize that he has negative value right now for them – he’s not currently worth what he makes to them, and they’d really like to keep him away from division rivals. The 49ers, for instance, need a quality backup and probably wouldn’t mind getting the Cardinals playbook either.
If I were in charge, I’d either offer to cover part of his 2010 salary or throw in a late round pick (5th?) just to get an AFC team to take him. Essentially, Leinart and a 5th for free, as long as they’ll keep him on the 53 all season.

See when you have phrases in giant print on your initial page, readers don’t look as it as a rumor … I don’t know how exactly you could correct that (maybe write the word “rumor” before the headline?). A specific reference is the Chris Perry “news line”, you first said he was cut, then said in a later blog that his mother passed, that’s why he wasn’t at training camp. Didn’t see any mention of “rumor” in that first blog … (if i missed that, sorry, don’t really see C.Perry as a BIG news item … Just needed an example …)

  27. klungemonger says: Sep 1, 2010 3:33 PM

Dig in his heels and force a release so he can pick his next team??? This jerk hasn’t earned a penny of what he’s been paid in his pointless career. If this louse ever plays again even as a backup he should consider himself extremely fortunate.
At least Alex Smith realized he was being labelled a bust and risked being cut so he was smart enough to take a pay cut, stay with the team, and wait for his chance to come around again. If Lienart refuses to do this he will prove he doesn’t deserve another chance anywhere.

That’s hilarious considering when you report Favre rumors on this site, you write the article with factual writing voice. You may label it as rumor, but you report on it as “fact” and then make conjectures based on that “fact”.

  32. Larry David says: Sep 1, 2010 3:40 PM

Rhett Bomar>Matt Leinart. It would be a waste of a trade and a roster spot for the Giants.

  33. steeelfann says: Sep 1, 2010 3:46 PM

    To whomever mentioned Troy Smith…………please.
He had 37 yards passing against the Florida Gators in the biggest game of his life. He does not have the juice to be an effective QB at this level. He is relatively short, a very average arm at best, and is not that accurate. Leadership is great. That will go out the door by game 4 if he is your starter. Great teammate though. Just not a starting NFL QB. Spin it any way you want, ain’t happening.

This statement makes a huge assumption….that Matt Leinart knows the playbook. He’s been here for 4 years and still can’t pick apart a defense…what makes you think he’d be able to stand on the sidelines for another team and tell the coach what play is coming??? That statement is almost as clueless as he’s been for this franchise…

Great post and love how you talked down to Florio. So true cause I take this site for what it is…entertainment and the “news” from it with a grain of salt.

  36. Delores W says: Sep 1, 2010 3:57 PM

I suppose Leinart can sit on the bench for the Giants just as well as he can sit on the bench for the Cardinals. I thought Bomar looked better than Leinart has for the Cardinals.

  37. Browns_why says: Sep 1, 2010 3:59 PM

Anderson is really good at making a team. He is still going to hang receivers out to dry and eventually they will morph into crocodiles. Hey it’s not his arse.
