Hip injury returns for Antonio Cromartie

In 2007, former Chargers cornerback Antonio Cromartie put together a Pro Bowl season.  In 2008, he regressed — due in large part to a hip injury that the team allegedly understated.

Kevin Armstrong of the New York Daily News reports that Cromartie was icing his hip after practice on Tuesday, and that coach Rex Ryan downplayed the condition in his daily press conference.

“I figured I’d float it out there, ‘Now they need Revis more than ever,’” Ryan said.  “Cromartie missed two plays of team period.”

During the offseason, Cromartie missed some reps during minicamp practices due to a “fatigued” hip.  But it was the left hip, not the right hip

This time, it’s the right hip.  And it’s the right hip that was fractured in 2008.

There’s already speculation and conjecture that the condition from two years ago has returned.  And, of course, Ryan would have to be coy about it, because if there’s any truth to it Revis’ leverage goes up even more.

Meanwhile, some league insiders are wondering why Ryan hasn’t used his enormous pile of political capital within the organization to press for the team to agree to Revis’ demands.  It’s possible that he’s tried, and that he’s simply gotten nowhere with it.  It’s also possible that he’s not willing to burn up any capital to get Revis in the fold, if he realizes that he’ll need all of it and more if the home run that Buddy’s bambino is predicting ends up being a slow roller to the pitcher’s mound.

Finally, we continue to be amused by the persistent reporting from one specific reporter at one specific organization that the Jets and Revis are making progress and continue to be close on a deal.  The report is incorrect.  There was no meeting last Tuesday (as the reporter reported, citing apparently the same single source), and no progress has been made.  The two sides aren’t talking.  Indeed, there’s nothing to talk about.  The deal will get done when someone caves.  And so it appears that the reporter in question will continue to say “it’s coming” until it happens, and then he’ll claim that he was right all along.

We’ll leave it at that for now, since we don’t want to be accused of getting anyone else suspended this week — and we don’t want to give the reporter any additional exposure for reporting something that is flat-out incorrect.

That said, a deal could get done tomorrow.  But it won’t be due to any meetings that didn’t happen last week or any negotiations that haven’t occurred.  It’ll happen if the team or Revis cries “Uncle,” which if it’s Revis who does it, the “Uncle” could be followed by “Sean.”

Ummm, the demand are pretty ####### outrageous… Rex knows you can’t bow down and pay one guy most of the pie…
Hey, there’s a line where a good organization knows how much a player or position is worth to them…. Revis is looking to get the top salary in the league right now before Brady and Manning get signed….
Meanwhile both those guys are in camp on the last year of their deals and REVIS HAS THREE ###### YEARS LEFT ON THE DEAL HE HELD OUT FOR!!!!!!!!
Now THAT to me is a story – How players have the nads to hold out and not honor a deal they held out for with 3 years left…
Mangold did it right – He was there for his team mates, he was there for the young guys and he got paid…. In my world the people who care about team and the organization and honor deals GET PAID!!!!

He’ll need to ice both broken hips when Brandon Marshall steamrolls over him. This should be funny to watch as Crow hates any contact.
He would be a good match for Ted Ginn Jr. Other than Ginn would burn him deep as he did Revis… at least a couple times

    @ Profit of the Light
You say “I guess when Kyle Wilson becomes the Jets #1 corner, they will finally stop being cheap and pay Revis.”
Why’s that? Kyle Wilson was “projected” to show just as much, if not more, promise as a NFL CB than Revis had been projected to show at the time of his drafting… so I’m not sure what your argument is… or why having Kyle Wilson as a starter CB is a bad thing? The guy was, is, and will continue to be (barring injury) a shutdown beast!
I would love for Wilson to be a starter at CB for the Jets this year… in fact, I would bet that most teams around the NFL would love to have a CB with Wilson’s ability starting on their squad too.

Why do the Jets need cornerbacks? They have Kris Jenkins, and he can tie up all 5 linemen, plus any tight ends that may be there, while still being disruptive in the backfield.
They also have David Harris. I’m not sure if you’ve heard this, but he can fly. I don’t mean he’s fast, I mean he can honestly fly.
They also have Bart Scott, who can knock people down from 30 yards away with laserbeams that he shoots from his eyes.
Other than that, they drafted Kyle Wilson – IN THE FIRST ROUND. That guy can cover 4 receivers at the same time. He’s that good.
Antonio Cromartie’s sperm is magical and will intercept any ball thrown from anywhere. Hell, there will be so many of them they’ll be intercepting passes from the hot dog vendors to people in the stands (or sidelines to quarterbacks as the case may be).
Shonn Greene is the greatest running back in the history of the universe. The guy makes Barry Sanders look like Estelle Getty. Also, Ladainian Tomlinson has not only not lost a step, he’s gained 4 steps, 3 legs and the ability to grant wishes. First wish? 100 consecutive superbowl wins.
Everything I just wrote is true. Just ask any Jets fan.

  51. Revis jets says: Sep 1, 2010 3:06 PM

Florio, did it cross your mind that Rex isn’t putting pressure cause he thinks that the jets are right!… Rex knows that a bad contract might kill the teams cap situation in a couple o years when it cones time for sanchez, Greene, Keller etc. to get new deals. He surely doesn’t wanna overspend for a guy with THREE years left on his deal. If I wouldn’t know any better, I’d be surprised how you missed the most obvious reason for Rex not putting pressure, dimwit.

  53. GreenAsGrass says: Sep 1, 2010 3:09 PM

Jets are loaded for bear, they will simply roll CB Kyle Wilson to the best WR instead of Revis. Allows Cromartie to be comfortable as 2nd CB. This change probably happens in Week #3 if Revis isn’t back (and I think he will be back by then)
In fact, the rookie Wilson will likely shut down B. Marshall twice this year. Chad Henne is going to be regurgitating turf with all the blitz packages Sexy Rexy will send his way.
It’s gonna be a LOOOONG year fish fans!

  54. Rmbay says: Sep 1, 2010 3:12 PM

    Rex Ryan’s enormous political capital??

I’ll wager that sometimes Tannenbaum and Johnson probably prefer he just shut the F- up.

  55. GreenAsGrass says: Sep 1, 2010 3:17 PM

Problem is the Fish don’t have a player on their team half as good as Revis.
Give an awful lot of credit to Rex and Tanny for drafting Kyle Wilson in the first round. the BEST part is that stupid Belicheck took Devin McCourty BEFORE the Jets got Wilson late in 1st round.
I’ve watched every RU game for past 4 years and McCourty was a very good college player but it won’t translate to the Pro’s other than special teams.
and now the Pats are going to have to start McCourty. The Pats are in more trouble than people think.

The colts definitely laid down but not the bengals. They took their starters out after the jets were up big and dominating. Jets smacked them around the next week too.
Of course they got lucky gettin in the playoffs but but you can’t deny the two road playoff games that Sanchez and the jets won against 2 division winners. All Sanchez has to do is not have 4 INT games and the jets will win 11 games.
