The Bears offense is supposed to be interesting under Mike Martz. Explosive. This preseason, they’ve just looked confused by a playbook they haven’t wrapped their heads around yet.
Quarterback Jay Cutler doesn’t mind.
''We’re kind of running things at inopportune times -- we’re not dialing stuff up when we could dial stuff up. So it’s kind of a cloak-and-dagger thing right now,” Cutler told Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun-Times. ''I’ve said it casually, but we’re just kind of calling plays to call plays and get them out there.”
Cutler has directed 16 drives this preseason, resulting in two touchdowns, two interceptions, and five three-and-outs. We’re inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt in his explanation.
We’ve watched too many preseasons to ascribe much importance to the results. Occasionally, total incompetence is a sign of things to come. (The 2009 Bills offense.) Just as often, it doesn’t mean anything.
We’ll only start worrying if the Bears can’t put up a lot of yards and points in Week One.
They host the Lions.
