"Operation Break Brett" begins in eight days

We understand that Vikings quarterback Brett Favre wants us all to think that he’s dealing with the frailties of middle age in his 20th NFL season, which will make him a hero if he performs well this year, and heroic if his body finally betrays him after hundreds of consecutive starts.

But Favre’s repeated declarations regarding his overall condition will have an unintended consequence come September 9.

“X” will mark the spot on every inch of Favre’s frame, and the assault will continue on a weekly basis until Tarvaris Jackson is taking the snaps.  For more, here’s a PFTV segment that was infected by some of the passion and fire we were experiencing on Tuesday over the whole Twitter hoax thing.  Enjoy.  And maybe turn the volume down a little.

  12. damnvarmint says: Sep 1, 2010 2:37 PM

Isn’t this pretty much the case for EVERY quarterback in the league? Is it news that teams want to hurt the opposing quarterback? Was there someone out there under the assumption that once a defensive player gets to the quarterback he gently massages his shoulders and asks him how his day is going?

You know what is hilarious? Watch the hypocrite on TV when he is interviewed. His tune on Favre changes 180 degrees. He mentions none of his crazy conclusions that he comes up with on this deadspin spinoff site he calls Pro Football Talk.

I see what Florio is saying, but it seems to be just common sense.
    1. Favre has a bum ankle that reduces his mobility. He’s not going to be rolling out, so you know where he’s going to be.
    2. The interior of the vikes line is weak.
    3. This is Favre’s team – not Peterson’s team. There is no fear of AP taking over games, but there is a fear of Favre doing that.
    4. I don’t know about Favre leaving if injured. In GB he’d play seasons with a broken thumb and had no accuracy. In NY he played with a bum shoulder. If you ding him up he’ll keep playing even at the detriment of his team for the records. And let’s be honest, nobody in that vike organization has the balls to sit Favre.
    5. Favre gets rattled and makes dumb mistakes.
I doubt defense will intentionally try to injure the guy to take him out of a game. I think the hits will be meant to keep him in, but rattle him.

  23. Raw Deal says: Sep 1, 2010 2:46 PM

Really?!? The Vikings have the only Quarterback that team Defenses try to take out?? WOW! I guess all the other team QB’s can just relax and take their time, because only the Vikings are cursed with such a problem. Do you ever actually think about what you’re typing, or are you so busy sniffing your finger after wiping your ass to realize what you’re saying? This is not profound. This is what defenses from Pop Warner on up try to do. That’s what they make great money to do in the NFL.

Special treatment for Favre because he is “good for the game”? How is he “good for the game?” He may be good for Ziggy and his wallet..but the game? Is Montana less good for the game since he retired?
Maybe the real lesson here is that if you are 41 years old you shouldn’t be playing the game at this level. It might be time for Favre to listen to the little man on his other shoulder this time. Time to retire Brent. Time to trick out that lawn tractor and mix yourself a nice Vodka and Lemonade.

We’ll never know, of course, but I bet the Vikings would have beaten the Saints handily if the teams had played again a week later. Hypothetical, of course.
Also don’t forget that the Cowboys beat the pants off the Saints a few weeks earlier. So for all those Saints chest-beaters, a reminder that the SB winner is rarely the objective best team in the league, just the one that caught the right breaks and played their best games at the end of the season (see 2007 Giants). Cowboys whupped Saints, Saints beat Vikings, Vikings whupped Dallas. What does it prove? That the best team is the one that wins last.
With all the issues the Vikes are facing, it’s almost impossible for them to repeat last year’s success. But no one’s in a perfect position this year, so this season seems available to anyone who wants to grab it.
Oh, and this does seem like a potentially dangerous PFT post. Is it designed to encourage violence and injury, or celebrate it? Or is it, in some roundabout way, designed to catch the eye of NFL officials to help them keep their eyes out for Favre being targeted?

  35. Gus says: Sep 1, 2010 2:56 PM

  36. mbbrazi says: Sep 1, 2010 2:58 PM

The Saints are lucky weasles. The fact they got away with those cheap shots on Favre and weren’t called for it. Some of the games they won? If the Vikings don’t fumble the game away, look for one of the most physical games in the history of the NFL because win or lose the Vikings will be incredibly physical running the ball and ramming it down New Orlean’s throat….and look for some vicious shots on the diminutive Breez-remember you heard it here!

What, are you a packers fan?

  40. goombar2 says: Sep 1, 2010 3:07 PM

I wouldn’t blitz Manning too much, he’d kill you. The idea with many QBs, especially those behind decent lines and with mobility is that you want to disguise the blitz.
What this does is confuse the line and blocking assignments. GB did this against Manning and made him release early, missing many throws when no blitz was called, then Manning thought we wouldn’t blitz and we did and his blocking assignment weren’t there. That’s how it normally works.
With Favre, again, his lack of mobility tells you where he’s going to be. The interior of the vikes line is porous to say the least. AP is not good at picking up blitzers. So teams can tee off on every play – no matter run or pass. The blitz up the middle is the worst to be susceptible to. A QB has to hand a ball off – every plays goes through him and this route to the QB is too quick.
And to make matters worse – Mount McGoofus is a horrid tackle so you really need someone to chip on his side too.

  41. purpleguy says: Sep 1, 2010 3:08 PM

Lord Favre probably isn’t going to be the issue if the Vikes lose to the Saints. Instead, it will be the injury depleted WR and DB positions, and the reshuffling of the O-line.

I’m sorry, I’m a believer in the playoff system determining the best team and the logic holds. Every SB winner has been the best team of the season – even the Giants of ’07.

Exactly. Say someone is successful in knocking Favre out of the game, maybe a couple weeks, maybe the season. If it goes unpunished, as did the cheap, over the line hits in the NFCC game, what is to stop other defenses from taking the same approach to other opposing teams?
There are at least 8 or 10 teams who would be in big trouble if their starter went down. I know Saints fans are incredibly proud of the “beatdown” their defense got away with, but how would they feel if Brees went down in September as the result of an illegal hit, which wasn’t even penalized.
New Orleans defensive gameplan was pretty apparent after the first drive of that game, and the refs had a chance to set an early precedent against such illegal hits. They chose to look the other way (no, I don’t believe the game was rigged Katrina style, either, just a case of really poor officiating), and this blatant attempt to injure the QB is the result.

And you’ll tune in on Sundays, just to watch Favre. Even if it is in the hope of watching him fail, you’ll still be watching, and that’s all the NFL cares about is whether you’re watching or not, not why you’re doing it.
As great as Montana was, he was nowhere near as popular as Favre. Love him or hate him, you still talk about him, you still watch him. Favre has generated more page views and higher ratings than any other NFL player. That’s why he’s good for the game.

Defense is given a step and the Saints took the step. That’s legal and fair. The vike line is over rated. And the Saints weren’t the first team to do it, the Cards and bears were extremely aggressive too and came away with victories.
GB did the opposite and put folks in zone coverage. Many teams did that too because of the fear of AP. That fear is now over, tough luck. Live and die by the Favre.

Yes NOLA came after Favre, yes, they were moderately successful. I say moderately only because as a team, the Vikings were still able to keep themselves in the game despite turning over the ball 5 times.
NOLA didn’t do anything different than any other team did all season. They went after Favre when (if) they could and more often they got burned for it.

Or….Rock You the Like a level 5 Hurricane by the Scorpions. Oh the great lyrics someone could come up with. New Orleans is a dump. They have the only stadium in the league that is worse than the Metrodome and were literally saved by a hurricane.

A “level 5 hurricane”? First off, the term is category, not “level.”

  72. thirdandgoal says: Sep 1, 2010 4:04 PM

I just don’t envision Favre as the kind that scares easily. He has made a career out of making defenses look pretty silly over the vast majority of the past 19 years, including arguably his best last year. If intimidation is the intent, I highly doubt it will be successful.
If injury is the intent and the league (through its game & oversight officials) allow it, then retailiation is enevitable and their on-field product will suffer, across the board, with trickle-down impacts ranging from erosion of the talent level to deflated TV ratings. I’d be careful if I were the Saints– they could very well want to make an example out of the first ones to try it.

  78. Sinatra's Index Finger says: Sep 1, 2010 4:24 PM

I’ve been pondering this since Floria first posed the idea and then it was restated by Teddy Brusci.
Now if the idea is to rough Favre up and it is done within the rules so be it. The strategy will either work or it will fail; we’ll soon know.
If however the plan is to continuously pull a Bobby McCray (which I’m convinced was intentional) then teams have to remember that, on the other side, the Vikings have Jared Allen who is bat shiat insane and has shown that he has no problem paying the fine for a cheap shots(ask Matt Schaub’s knee).
As Sean Connery so aptly put it in the Untouchables, “If they put one of our guys in the hospital, we put one of theirs in the morgue.”
This is the way the Suh will eventually be brought under control; not through fines from Goodell but because the exact same cheap shots he inflicts on QBs will be exacted on Stafford.
Mark it down…first cheap shot against Favre and Allen takes out Brees at the knees.
Mutually Assured Destruction…worked with atomic weapons and it will work in the NFL.

Don’t insult us Florio by saying “we”. Say “I” or “me and my moron twin Rosenthall”
You might have a few ignorant, bitter Packers fans on here that put up with your constant obsessing about Favre and look for any reason to chime in on the subject, but PLEASE don’t think that even the casual football fan buys into your pathetic crap and conjecture about it.
Your statement is moronic. Favre absolutely is dealing with the fragilities of Middle age, he has been playing football for 20 years. The only time he talks about them is when other idiotic (and still much more qualified than you) reporters ask him about them. Then those same idiotic reporters (and the even less informed and less respected media members such as yourself) write it all down and call it a story.
You are talking about a guy that just wants to play football, and was begged by his organization to come and do so. So he did it on his terms – terms that might not have been the best for his team and certainly weren’t the best for idiots like you that looked even stupider for not knowing what was going on, but his terms regardless. Congrats to him for having enough value to an organization to be able to pull that off. My guess is that if you were sitting at home in Hattiesburg, MS and told NBC/PFT you thinking about not coming back – they wouldn’t send three colleagues to convince you otherwise….they would send three security guards to your house to grab your laptop, pen, and whatever blackmail documents you’ve had over NBC execs for the last 5 years to keep your job -then throw a big party back at the office.
Your psychotic obsessing over Favre and need to try to disparage him whenever you get a chance is pathetic. I’m neither a Vikings or Favre fan, but he is great for football and I wish him the best. I don’t blame him one bit for all the competitive, ridiculous drama and conjecture that morons like you feel they need to write about every day.
People that say they are “Sick of Favre” need to wake up, understand the root cause of the problem, and say instead “I am stick of these dead beat stories and the psychotic obessive ‘reporters’ at PFT that insist on continuing it as a daily story line”
Enough already dude. You have very little credibility as it is. Every one of these stories just makes you look more and more pathetic – similar to you continuing to bore us with crap about that reporter from washington that made you look dumber than a rotted old stump for biting hook, line and sinker on his twitter post instead of checking it out for yourself.

Favre got hit, often. He stood in the pocket, held onto the ball and took a beating. There were TWO hits that should have been late hits against the Saints for hitting Favre. There were also TWO hits that should have been late hits against the Vikings for hitting Brees. The “late hits” that were not called against the Saints were simply plays where Favre stayed in the pocket too long and took a hit like man. He is a very tough QB and he wanted to win, so he stood in the pocket longer than he would have been advised to do. He could not have played in the Super Bowl anyway, so you would have lost another one.

As a Saints fan I don’t mind admitting that Brett is one tough SOB. When he signed with the Vikings a Jets beat writer said that he still had trouble reading defenses after all the time he’s spent in the league. I don’t know how accurate that is. Defenses try to hit him because they know he’d rather take a chance at making a play than taking a sack. He’s always played like that and it’s what endears him to some and it’s also what makes those who pull for the teams he’s played on pull their hair out.

  109. sand0 says: Sep 1, 2010 8:09 PM

If teams play within the rules of the game this is fine. If teams are willing to risk having a big gain dropped on them by blitzing extra men then that is within the rules of the game. But if teams, and really we are just talking the Saints here at this point, are looking to intentionally make illegal hits to put him out then that has nothing to do with his age.
That low blow he took in the NFC Champ game would have put most QB’s out of the contest. Even in Favre’s advanced age he can still take a hit with the best of them. But no players can take high lows and blows to the head and late shots.
And the Vikings defense has Brett’s back as well. If a club wants to go out of its way to ruin the Vikes entire season then they risk having their franchise QB put on the shelf in the process. This isn’t really worth it unless you are in the playoffs.
Saints aggresive gameplan resulted in the Vikings putting up massive yardage. Vikes conservative gameplan resulted in them holding the Saints well below their average output. The fumbles weren’t a result of hitting Brett and those are what hurt the team the most in that game. If the refs had correctly called the illegal high low hit, which the later admitted to screwing up, that would have negated one of the Saints red zone turnovers that led to some of their points.
The pitfalls of over aggressive game planning against the Vikes is no different than any other contest. Just because PFT posters hate the guy doesn’t mean players and coaches from other team are going to throw away their honor and respect for the game. Last year teams went after Brett to force mistakes and again that will be the case.
The guy isn’t that damn fragile. He is just now as fragile as average QB’s. Favre took plenty of hits last year and was still standing. Before that last int, which wasn’t caused by his ankle, he was in the process of leading an impressive drive.
And don’t forget that despite all he says, his ankle operation was just to remove bone spurs. This is a common procedure and not that big of a deal. He just likes to talk about it.

Therefore, I would suggest you treat the people on here the same way you would treat your friends. I give Gravy credit for tempering his posts lately, with less hate-filled rhetoric and more fair and honest comparisons and logical thinking. He is making an effort. Just as I hold my own children to a higher standard than I do other people’s kids, I will call out anyone proclaiming themselves to be a Vikings fan to a higher standard than I do others, although I intend to continue calling out everyone.
There are entirely too many people who hide behind the anonymity of internet chat rooms and use the faceless nature of these sites as an excuse for unacceptable social behavior. These people don’t see the benefit to our own lives and the way we view our favorite teams that is presented by the availability of people all over the country to give us their opinions, and we to give ours of their teams. We all need to be fair and honest with our assessments of these situations if we want this to be anything more than an internet version of a 1960s southern anti-desegregation streetfight.

Well Majik Bullet, given that I guess OJ was AWESOME for the NFL.
Favre playing until he’s 90 isn’t really helping the league. It’s helping himself and Ziggy get rich. Period. End of story.
    ______________
Are you retarded? By referencing OJ, I’m left to assume you are referring to the buzz generated by his murder trial. But what you’re not intelligent enough to realize is that I’m talking about game ratings, not CourtTV ratings. I guess I should have specified I meant ratings for games. My mistake for assuming I was dealing with someone of average intelligence.
And honestly, if Favre actually played until he was 90, how would that possibly be bad for the league. This would also drive incredible ratings to the games themselves. Of course it will never happen, but I can guarantee you would watch it if it did.
How are you struggling to comprehend this? No matter what Favre does, it garners nonstop media coverage. This draws attention to the league. And when Favre decides to suit up year after year, the media blows it way out of proportion, and sheep like you eat it up like candy, and feel the need to read and comment on everything Favre, and the NFL knows that you will be glued to your set on Sundays, to watch Favre play. They could care less if you wish him success or failure, as long as you’re watching him do it.

I really don’t feel I should have to explain it you.
You seem intelligent enough, but here goes.
Look around you Man! Just read the posts.
This site is nothing but a bitch fest, trash talking site. It emenates from the top. Florio has figured out that if he slants the stories a certain way, he is going to generate clicks to his website. So he will fan the flames of all the rivalries and get them to post against each other. All the while he is making money on the deal.
Check out any Viking or Packer post, find the source of the story, then read that article. It will be basically the same, except he will leave out a key piece, making into a thing that it isn’t. Making it look like “Player for Packers calls Favre out for his retirement BS”.
What will be left out is the context, the guy could be laughing or he will leave the line out that says its his career and if he can still play—play. Ya see?
As for your moral policing of everyone.
I’d give it up now, You are opening yourself up for ridicule. If you want intelligent sports talk, you are on the wrong site. There are others out there for that. Here, you are just going to get bombarded by people saying nasty shit to you til you either give up and leave or join in and sling shit back.
    Is it childish? Sure
    Is it fun? You bet.
I love riling people up and trash talking in general.
I was the same as you when I first came on this site. You aren’t going to change the majority, so either go with the flow, or find another site.
I’m trying to save you some trouble and time.
People are already giving you shit. It’s tame by the standards( or lack thereof) here.
Peopl don’t want to read someone calling them immature and chastising them. hell, we all know how we are acting.

I do behave this way in public. To my freinds. We trash talk sports all the time. There is packer fans of course, some Vikes fans, a few Bears fans and actually 2 Lions fans.
You have to have thick skin to hang around in the group of people i do. it’s all in fun and no one is being mean just to be mean.
That carries over on here somewhat, 1 of my freinds posts on here also. I wouldn’t guess i’d call anyone a freind on here, i don’t know anyone. But, you do see certain people on here most days and you kind og get to like their style.
Why am I on here? Because some of the humor on here is top notch. Pervy and Gravy, Supersuckers, Majik, footballrulz, heel even some of the guys i argue with ACS2 is a zingmeister, I’m missing people and I’m not meaning too.
it’s just people blowing off steam and having fun doing it. I laugh out loud on some occasions. it passes my day at work also.
I get what you are saying about people being pissy either way. It’s just that instead of talking about football, you’ll be in a pissing match about you telling someone else how to act.
The thing of it is, a lot of people on here don’t understand that most of this is a joke. Some of them are so blindingly homers that it is difficult to even have a rationale conversation with them.
There is no objectivity whatsoever. Those are the people i engage. Just to poke and prod.
I understand that you’d like it to be football talk, you and i could start a convo, someone would see what we were discussing and start pissing all over it and we’d spend more time debating them, than the topic.
Several of us have tried to ignore that and keep on, but there are just so many people that would make it not worth the effort, so we went back to trash talking.
It is mental masturbation, but there are always a few posts that make me laugh, all in all not bad for a work day.
I do go to 1 other site, there isn’t so much of the BS on there.
I wasn’t lecturing you by any means, i hope you din’t take it that way.

#1, it’s funny and don’t even try to deny it. especially t.t., how is a gay vampire in the nfl not funny?? he’s really cheap and he always gets for sale signs put in his lawn and 5 year old kids flip him off and he’s a vampire, how is that not funny???
and “aaron” did that whole interview in the sporting news about his roommate and how they met and how much they hit it off and how deep their relationship goes and how gay they are for each other, and we’re not supposed to be able to talk about that???
i’m not saying anybody should hold it against him or that he’s not a good q.b., except for him being 17-15 after 5 years in the league and he may have a tendency to hold onto the ball too long and fumblekickchoke playoff games away, but why are we not even allowed to mention his gayness, which we hardly ever do anyways cuz it upsets you people so much.

One thing to remember, though the Saints beat the Vikings, Brees was playing scared-shitless. If it wasn’t for “The Fumbler,” it is a blowout the other way. Also, we all know that Payton is a cheater and the NFL wanted “closure” for Katrina and the sewage dump (literally) that’s known as New Orleans.

  159. cusoman says: Sep 2, 2010 8:36 PM

Wow guys, God forbid we talk football on a football site. You guys hardly do any of that, and that’s the real problem. Then again, I chalk all of this up to pre-season mass hysteria because everyone wants to talk up their team without any real facts from a new season to back it up, so they attack people personally.
I’m all for smash talking, really I am – http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&as_q=cusoman&as_epq=&as_oq=&as_eq=&num=10&lr=&as_filetype=&ft=i&as_sitesearch=profootballtalk.nbcsports.com&as_qdr=all&as_rights=&as_occt=any&cr=&as_nlo=&as_nhi=&safe=off
It’s when personal attacks get involved that I really don’t care for it and it brings the site down from an outsiders standpoint. Like at a game… you can talk back all you want about your team and the game from across the row, but the second you bring my wife or kids or personal life into it, you crossed the line and I know for a fact other people are the same way, and some of you guys cross the line with people on here and it takes away from real football conversation, because all it is, is a few of you going back and forth on one another.
You know, I just realized that this post will end up being futile and you guys will do your thing no matter what I say, so I’m not going to babble on, but I just had to get some things off my chest before the almighty Vikings Lynch Mob. Que sera, sera, gents… see you during the season when we can talk football facts and not ad hominems.

How come Saint fans and maybe a few clueless Packer fans are the only ones saying the Saints gave the Vikings a beat down? They won in score which is all that matters however a “beatdown” it was not. I never knew of an OT game to be a “beatdown” ever. While you think about that aren’t you ashamed of the fact the Saints were home, led by a large margin in the turnover ratio and still had to take a team you supposedly “beatdown” into overtime? Pretty funny. Do you know what a beatdown is? Maybe it’s what you do every night on your bed but it sure as hell wasn’t that game.

Oh my little peasant, you must learn. Why don’t you ask Brett’s bum ankle if it was a beat down. How about Sidney Rice’s hip? Did we not tear Cedric Griffin’s knee??? By all accounts, we literally beat the snot out of you. We didn’t win because you turned the ball over, we won because we took the ball away. So the answer to your question is no, I am not ashamed of my World Champion Saints, just proud to be holding the Lombardi!!!

Yeah and your players got fined for more than you make in a year for it, which means they weren’t legal hits. Anyone can give anyone a beatdown at any given time they choose but if it’s assault you’re going to jail for it. Enjoy the flip side of karma golden boys, you’re going to need those paper bags again.

@Kay Bee – yes, it was a beating. Did you actually watch the game? The Cowboys handled the Saints, thoroughly, for the entire game, completely deflating all their showy strengths. The score was closer than the game, and the Saints were outclassed in every way.
@goombar2 – there’s no logic displayed in your comment, just opinion. You’re opinion’s valid, but don’t present it as anything more objective than that. Did I say the Bills were Super Bowl winners? I’m just providing some context for people who think their team is objectively the best because they won three games at the end of the season. Super Bowls are pretty much just contrived nonsense, an artifice to provide closure. We all love ‘em, of course, but that’s all they are.
@Ilovefoolsball – your comment to me is like a much dumber, less classy version of goombar2′s referenced above. You sound pretty dumb, so nothing more to say here.

I’m your little peasant? LMAO. My guess is you are about 13 years old. Any non Saint fan knows the Vikings dominated the game in every matter LEGALLY. Yes the Saints won the game but beat down all I can do is laugh at you.
You know what? Keep thinking that. It’s fine with me. What is really sad is how happy I was that the Saints won the SB after we lost. But it’s fans like you that make me change my mind. All I can say is I am looking forard to Thursday night. Make sure you come here Friday so we can discuss this. Just remember this time the refs won’t feel so sorry for your team and it’s highly doubtful the Vikings turn the ball over as much as they did that game. Without that the Saints were blown out. But it is what it is. The Saints won the game. Congrats! But you seem to be pretty tough behind a computer. I’m going to be at the game. How about I meet up with you and have a beer? I’d love to see how tough you talk in person.

Wow, first time I heard the “13 year old” on here…..you should have finished with the original “live in your mom’s basement” trick too you fool! LMAO! Did I hit a nerve? Threats over the internet, really?? How brave. I will be on this site on Friday and say congrads if you win, no doubt. But lets get one thing straight, this game does not decide who goes to the SB. Important? Yes. But does not determine outcome of season.
    CUSOMAN,
You must learn one thing, football is also about strategy. It is not basketball, their is no “6th foul.” Don’t you think that Gregg Williams took into account that you need to rattle Favre? So by literally kicking him to the curb, we earned the right to hoist the Lombardi. Like it or not—admit it or not, by beating the snot out of your pretty boy Brett got us to the promise land!!!
    TWO DAT!!

This is very disturbing, Florio. It makes me sick that you’re cheering for Favre to be injured. I never wish for injuries. And even though I never wish for injuries, Saints fans should remember that Drew Brees is on the Madden cover. We all know what happens there. Just ask Troy Polomalu & Larry Fitzgerald.
