Three teams have talked about trading for Matt Leinart

Trading Matt Leinart won’t be easy because of his contract, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that three teams have discussed picking up Leinart: The Bills, Raiders, and Giants.  It’s unclear whether they’ve talked to the Cardinals or just have considered the move internally.

The Giants make the most sense to us.  Leinart fits the David Carr profile of a first-round quarterback on the rebound that could provide a solid backup behind Eli Manning.  Rhett Bomar is currently the team’s backup with Jim Sorgi out for the year.

In Buffalo, Leinart would squeeze Ryan Fitzpatrick or Brian Brohm off the roster and possibly provide an alternative to Trent Edwards during the season.   In Oakland, Leinart could compare ex-girlfriends with Kyle Boller.

Like we said yesterday, it would be a shocker at this point if Leinart remained an Arizona Cardinal by the end of the weekend.

    “Three teams have talked Leinart.”

with a salary of 7.36 million next year, there will be no trade, he will ride the bench or be cut.

  3. Cup says: Sep 1, 2010 8:37 AM

Don’t give him the satisfaction… Just cut him.

who cares, this guy is a bum…obviously his teammates hate him too.

The list of successful left handed QB’s isn’t very long. It can be counted on 1 hand. The list for left handed bust QB’s is much longer. I wouldn’t mess with a left handed QB, period!

  6. thinkkaz says: Sep 1, 2010 8:38 AM

So 2 of the teams who are looking at Leinart want his noodle arm in cold & windy stadiums. Yeah, that’s smart.

  7. sevenwords says: Sep 1, 2010 8:43 AM

I HIGHLY DOUBT the Bills want him. Hell, even Ryan Fitzpatrick is better than Leinart and he’s already on our roster. I’m starting to think ESPN will print anything, even if it’s not true.
All of our QB’s have looked pretty good in preseason. Edwards has already solidified the QB position and Levi Brown will be our #3. It’s down to Brohm or Fitzpatrick for our #2. So far, both have been pretty even in preaseason so it’s anyone’s guess right now who they keep. I think Brohm has more upside, Fitzpatrick is more mobile, but has a hefty contract compared to Brohm. Either way, after the showing against the Bungles, I am cautiously optimistic about the Bills this year. It’s the D that makes me worried.

Also, NO WAY IN HELL do I want Leinart on the Bills BTW. The guy has done nothing since he’s been in the league. We’ve had our share of those, thanks.

  10. Raider Redleg says: Sep 1, 2010 8:45 AM

I would hope the Raiders would NOT trade for him…Perhaps sign him if he is released because Al Davis is a USC alumni AND loves collecting former 1st rounders, but either trading for him or picking up as a FA would go against the recent wave of good personnel moves (Campbell/Mclain/Houston) and harken back to the Randy Moss/DeAngelo Hall/Javon Walker/Gibril Wilson mistakes of the past.
Gratsky has the ideal mindest to be a backup and Kyle Boller realizes that if isn’t the #3 Raider QB then he is probably doing auditions for the UFL next. Colt Brenan would make a good practice squad guy this year and have him go after Kyle Boller’s job next year.
Raiders instead need to focus on scouring the waiver wire for FBs (especially if Tony Richardson is released from the Jets) and OL (especially at Center) than picking up a “head case” QB.

Be very careful not to violate Florio’s new groundrules regarding FABRICATING stories. Even if you are trying to be humorous, many of your comments are fabrication.

  12. afogg0855 says: Sep 1, 2010 8:52 AM

Maybe they can trade him to the UFC for Rampage Jackson.
Then Leinart can put to use all that MMa training he did instead of becoming a better Quarterback.

  13. I *heart* Florio says: Sep 1, 2010 8:56 AM

If the Bills do this for a 6th rounder or less and hes going to be the backup only.. sure, why not.
He will be out of Cali, away from the distractions.
Now he just has to work on that noodle of an arm against the B-Lo winds.

What do you idiots know about “shockers”….except when you get duped on twitter posts. One of you had a ridiculous article a few days ago about how it would make sense for the Cardinals to keep Leinart at $2.5MM this year because they need some half way competent depth behind Anderson, and if they cut Leinart next year before his 11.5MM salary….they would get a 6MM cap credit.
Now I’m not saying ANY logic you and your idiot twin Florio throw out there makes sense or even would be of interest to a prisoner in solitary confinement if somebody slid it under the door to them…….but if for some reason – like a blind squirrel finding a nut – the source you stole that info from was correct…..wouldn’t the same logic apply to other teams with a similar need?

  15. Junior says: Sep 1, 2010 9:01 AM

Another player linked to the Raiders with no justification. I’m shocked. It’s almost like Schefter thought to himself, “I need at least 3 teams… Oh, I can just throw the Raiders in there.”
At this point I doubt Leinart is an improvement over their 4th QB, Colt Brennan. I guess if you throw enough crap against the wall some of it will stick.

  16. Meldog says: Sep 1, 2010 9:02 AM

I hope he doesn’t come to Buffalo. I think Fitzpatrick is a good backup QB…..Say what you want about Trent Edwards, but that won’t change the fact that Leinart is not a starter in this league.

  17. Tcostant says: Sep 1, 2010 9:11 AM

The bigger story: What will Cards do to address their QB issue?

  21. whybuffalowhy says: Sep 1, 2010 9:23 AM

“ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on his twitter account that the Bills were one of three teams that have discussed trading for Arizona QB Matt Leinart along with the Raiders and Giants. That report is erroneous.
Buffalobills.com has confirmed that the Bills have not had any discussions with the Cardinals in regards to Matt Leinart and aren’t anticipating any in the future. The report is simply not true.”
Schefter is consistantly wrong when reporting about the Bills. PFT would be wise to not jump on anything of his concerning the Bills.

Charter member, as in you belong in Charter Pines, the mental hospital maybe. The Browns are thrilled with their QB play with Delhomme and Seneca Wallace, they’re paying mucho dinero to Delhomme (who has actually played really well) and Wallace is a decent backup with other skill sets, and they have Colt McCoy, stupid assumption they’d go after Leinart.
The Panthers have Matt Moore who, despite struggling in the preseason, has torn it up in the regular season and they’re expecting big things from. And behind him they have Jimmy Clausen who has played relatively well for a rook, and is a 2nd round pick, then they have Hunter Cantwell who may be a roster casualty and eventual practice squad player, if for no other reason than to make room for Tony Pike, 6th round pick. He’s not heading east bud, trust me.

We dont need JP Loserman 2.0 in Buffalo. Ill wait for the draft next year thanks.

  28. raiderrob21 says: Sep 1, 2010 9:58 AM

Bills and Giants make sense. NO WAY in hell Raiders belong on that list. They have no need at QB. Gradkowski lit up the 49er Defensive starters and proved last year down the stretch we have value with him. Kyle Boller has done well in preseason to be worthy of 3rd string. The team that belongs on that list is the 49ers. Matt Lienart becomes the best QB on that roster!

    _______________
Maybe, but we have 4 QBs now, Campbell is our starter and we have 2 great backups in Gradkowski and Boller. Hell Colt is better than Leinart, and it has been said, we have more worries than QB.

  30. Tinbender says: Sep 1, 2010 9:59 AM

The Raiders just got rid of JaMarcus, why would they want Matt?

  31. steveinohio says: Sep 1, 2010 10:02 AM

I heard when the Cards called one team and asked them what they would give for Leinart, one GM said “I got an idea, how about I give you a hobo’s d#*k cheese instead.”
I don’t know if this is one of the “teams offering a trade” but no one will give you idiots anything back for him because he has no value and you are going to cut him anyway.

  32. bdinphoenix says: Sep 1, 2010 10:07 AM

FinFan, Matt Leinart is NOT a better backup than anyone, unless handling a clipboard and headphones counts. He is wretched and that candy arm of his will make you wonder how he was ever drafted in the first place.

  33. TornadoRex says: Sep 1, 2010 10:12 AM

sevenwords, I’m not cautiously optimistic about the Bills this year… I’m extremely positive that they’re already on the clock.
Cross your fingers for the Rams to continue doing their thing, because the Bills are in for a season of hurt.

  34. FinFan68 says: Sep 1, 2010 10:13 AM

I still think he gets cut…and the Saints take a look at him. He simply does not have the persona;ity/confidence for NYG. The Bills have better options in the draft (Mallet) and Oakland’s Gradkowsky (sp?) is as good as their starter. The Vikings would be an option for him…if he were 10-12 years older

  35. badmude911 says: Sep 1, 2010 10:15 AM

Do your research Gregg Rosenthal. Why is it that every time a team has a cast off, it’s rumored the Raiders are interested. They don’t even talk to the media.
It’s probably the Card are interested in a trade due to the fact that all 5 of the Raiders QBs are better than Leinart.
Well maybe if they offer up Fitzgerald? they can have Colt Brennan.

  36. Wizahdry says: Sep 1, 2010 10:16 AM

I don’t see any trade happening unless that contract is renegotiated. All of those trade scenarios would have him as a back up making starter money. It’s crazy that he is upset about being a back up but I can’t see any other NFL team that owuld want him as a starter.

You are a dumbass!! whats with you in the niners? is there a post where u dont mention the niners? And you keep posting the same in every lienart post ( he will be the best niners qb ). do you actually believe that? really? you’re an idiot for just saying that, u think that boller is better than Lienart but you think that lienart is better than smith? STUPID!!! for your info boller is trash, but since he’s a raider i guess he is awesome. i’m sure if he was with the niner you wouldnt think that.
Learn how to be a good critic and stop being some bias with your own team
I’m sure you can’t stand that the better team is across the bay but dude, seriously… go post your stupidity in your raider threads.
