Michael Crabtree's status for Thursday night remains uncertain

We think we know this much: 49ers receiver Michael Crabtree will not say that a “neck strain” prevents him from playing in San Francisco’s preseason finale Thursday.

That’s the reason Crabtree gave when he missed San Francisco’s second preseason game, even though the team declared him available.  It’s also the reason Crabtree didn’t play in the team’s third preseason game, even though the team announced that he would start.

For those scoring at home, Crabtree has never played in a preseason game.  It’s uncertain if that will change on Thursday night, one day after he was removed from the practice field after getting an earful from 49ers captain Vernon Davis.

Apparently, the unhappiness with Crabtree’s act is not new.  But one player told Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee there isn’t team-wide resentment towards Crabtree.  Still, there’s something going on here.

Matt Maiocco of Comcast Bay Area writes that Crabtree seems to “play by different rules” than the rest of the roster.  Alex Smith reportedly called a players only meeting of key skill position guys last week to “set some things straight with all of us to make sure we were all thinking the same thing.”

This is the type of story that will blow over if the 49ers and especially Crabtree get off to a fast start this year.  It’s also the type of the story that could linger all year if the 49ers struggle and Crabtree continues to be a pain in the neck.

Somebody tell Crabtree only proven veterans get to skip pre-season.

Crabtree and Hayneswoth need to go start their own league and leave the pros alone. Something needs to be written into the CBA dealing with this type of issue. Get paid only if you follow team and league rules, if not, you don’t.

Drama queen. Look for the ViQueens to trade for him next year. He is a perfect fit.

    Wow! Problems with Crabtree shocking.

  5. Draft King says: Sep 2, 2010 3:42 PM

Crabtree should look to Ezal from the movie Friday for inspiration. “Oh, my neck, my back, my neck and my back!”

Craptree is Terrell Owens without any NFL accomplishments.

I think they make a Shampoo to take care of that.?.?.?

in the third game he said his neck was sore and the team said ok, you’re not playing. there was never any indication he said he didn’t want to play, even if that was in the back of his mind.

He’s already a cancer, pretty amazing.

I dont think so. Divas and Drama Queens dont mesh well in NFL locker rooms. Especially when the Queen hasnt done sh!t in the league.

PFT and some of you people crack me up. There isn’t a story here at all. The season is about to start and Vernon Davis is a big personality. He said what was on his mind and Crabtree didn’t like it.
Should Crabtree be out there in the pre-season? Yes. Do the coaches handle this? Yes. Has Crabtree been a cancer in the locker room this offseason? No. He has busted his arse just as much as anyone else. He got his neck strain while busting his arse on the practice field scoring a touchdown.
The media needs to generate hits and make stories. Its what they do. But the story they are making now is much to do about nothing. Its just a verbal argument between two players. Its already been resolved.

Crabtree is the opposite of T.O. He is a very quiet kid that doesn’t seek media attention and is not a loudmouth like T.O. or Davis for that matter. He does his talking with his play and can actually catch the ball unlike T.O. He was hurt in practice making a spectacular catch and landed on his head. The coaches and trainers kept him out of the games, it wasn’t him refusing to play. So at least get some of the facts straight!

ROFLMAO @ people calling him a “cancer”. We’ll see when he catches 70 balls, 800+ yards and 5+ TDs.

    Well said Mezter,
This “minor” thing happens in every NFL camp every frickin’ year…..HELLO!
Jack’s right once Crabtree get’s going this will be blown over like yesterday’s newspaper on a deserted street.

    Mezter,
You play for the 49ers? Or you’re in their locker room? Are you the manager of Equipment? How do you know he hasnt been a problem? And why would you get so upset about another grown man you dont even know? Or do you? Im so confused.

as long as he is ready to go opening day…who cares

  18. In & Out Burger says: Sep 2, 2010 5:01 PM

    @raiderrob21
How would you know? Your team hasn’t been good enough to disprove that theory for years.
Case in point, Randy Moss, sucked for your god awful team, played well and kept his mouth shut with the Patriots.

  19. bwisnasky says: Sep 2, 2010 5:16 PM

In & Out Burger.. yes.. it’s amazing how much Randy Moss looked better when he had a QB that could get him the ball and an offensive line that could protect said QB…
    fail

  20. Slim Charles says: Sep 2, 2010 6:35 PM

Yeah, who cares? The only reason Favre gets a free pass and not Crabtree is race. People find it endearing when he sits on his farm popping percocets while riding his tractor around and yet Crabtree is a diva for being injured.

  21. bwisnasky says: Sep 2, 2010 7:40 PM

@Slim Charles… Actually no, most fans don’t give Favre a pass, but even if the media does, it’s because he’s been in the league 20 years… Crabtree, although showing promise as a rookie when he finally came in, has not accomplished a d*mn thing in the NFL, but acts like he is a polished veteran. That’s why people are all over Crabtree’s diva act. It has nothing to do with his race… in 20 years, if he’s still around, and he wants to act like a diva, I’m sure he’ll get the same pass that Favre gets now… but, he has to earn that right… and as of yet, he hasn’t.

  22. StevieMo says: Sep 2, 2010 7:51 PM

    Wow. A whole 5+ TD’s? I guess he is a flipping superstar…

  23. Sactown49er says: Sep 2, 2010 8:00 PM

While I agree this will all be blown over once the season gets going, I would like to see him out there tonight for a few series

  24. robert ethen says: Sep 2, 2010 8:04 PM

Nothing uncertain about his status. He is still a certified jerk, just as he was when they drafted him.
