Expect the unexpected in Raiders' roster cuts

Raiders coach Tom Cable has given a message to his players as they enter their final preseason game tonight: Don’t assume your job is safe.

Cable says the team will have a harder time cutting from 75 to 53 players this year than it has since he first joined the team as an assistant coach in 2007, and a lot of players who might think their jobs are safe are actually playing for their jobs tonight.

“Oh, there’s definitely going to be some eye-openers,” free safety Michael Huff said of the roster moves the Raiders will make by Saturday afternoon. “But that’s what goes with being a good organization, being a team that has quality depth and great players. There’s always going to be competition, and there’s going to be players that could start for other teams, but because we have so much depth here, they won’t be able to play here.”

Steve Corkran of the San Jose Mercury News has sketched out his best estimate about which players are locks, which players are on the bubble and which players are long shots. Cable’s message has been that even players who think they’re locks might not be right.

    DHB anyone?

  4. joetoronto says: Sep 2, 2010 10:16 AM

The ignorant, like PurpleNGold, don’t know that the Raiders actually have plenty of depth now.
It hasn’t hit the main stream media yet.

  5. Poo Flinging Monkey says: Sep 2, 2010 10:21 AM

It wouldn’t be unexpected for them to cut all 75 current players and start over.

  6. minhw0714 says: Sep 2, 2010 10:23 AM

Mike Huff calls the Raiders a “good organization” . . . the term BUST doesn’t just apply to Huff’s on field performance now.

  7. DarkHorse81 says: Sep 2, 2010 10:26 AM

So is McFadden getting cut or what talk about over hype and injury prone dude as done nothing for the Raiders since he got there.

  8. Play4Blood says: Sep 2, 2010 10:38 AM

The Michael Huff quote may prove prophetic. I hope not. Dude could be a quality CB if they’d put him there.

  9. txtumbleweed says: Sep 2, 2010 10:44 AM

The Raiders are much better this year and will surprise lots of people.

  10. TryTheVeal says: Sep 2, 2010 10:47 AM

Jamarcus might be gone, but i think he left some of that drank in Huff”s locker…

  11. Mangy66 says: Sep 2, 2010 10:47 AM

The irony, if Michael Huff gets cut.

  12. raidertg says: Sep 2, 2010 10:49 AM

Here come all the haters talking out there ass about the Raiders. For those not paying attention to last year like *minwo714* Huff has step up and his performance last year showed that.

  13. INVAIDUH says: Sep 2, 2010 10:53 AM

AIDS sound like a bitter man too.
guessin’ for more than one reason.

  14. humbolt says: Sep 2, 2010 11:13 AM

It’s harder for the Raiders to make roster cut downs because their entire squad , save the kicker, punter and one cornerback, is third-string or practice squad talent. Al would be well-served to scour the cuts from the other 31 teams and assemble an entirely new roster. It would be more competitive than the one he has now.

  15. Ray Guy says: Sep 2, 2010 11:13 AM

Huff may be partially right, but I wish he would tackle more and talk less.
Maybe the “turk” will knock on his door this year.

  16. JSpicoli says: Sep 2, 2010 11:34 AM

And so they will really not be “eye openers” as the team has some depth to deal with.
But that wouldn’t really make a good headline now would it?

  17. sullijo says: Sep 2, 2010 11:37 AM

“But that’s what goes with being a good organization”
Michael Huff – you should be a comedian! I can’t stop laughing at that one!!!

  18. veistran says: Sep 2, 2010 11:49 AM

Huff has been better, but he still plays like he’s allergic to tackling.

  19. PurpleNGold says: Sep 2, 2010 12:04 PM

    Oakland Raiders know
lots of depth at the bottom
    few elite players

All the “Haters” concerns about the Raiders final 52 Man Roster is very touching (Dumbolt your posting was especially insightfull…I am sure it took you ALOT of time to craft it).

  22. 1NationRaiderNation says: Sep 2, 2010 1:00 PM

lets just say this….once the raiders make the cuts, see how many of them will not even clear waivers…….the raiders unfortunately the past few years cant even keep guy’s on the practice squad that they wish they could , becuase others team’s nab them.
    It’s 53 btw.

  23. tango says: Sep 2, 2010 1:06 PM

Cable is right ” expect the unexpected ” because dead al will keep a few players that would not make any other teams practice squad and dispose of a few players who will go to contribute with some really good teams. I hope cable and coordinators step and do not allow dead al to continue his ludicrous ways !

Seymour says they’re good, Gruden says they’re good, but we have some experts here that know better.

tango the retarded, idiotic, moron, hillbilly, momma’s boy, window licking, fat pig and stunnedbolt are off to their usual flapping their gums about things they know nothing about. (I know, that could be anything). Tell me, tango, you stupid, bigoted retard: if God (AKA Al Davis) has hired Coach Cable why do you have faith in Cable but not in God (AKA Al Davis)? That’s right, retard. As usual you prove what an idiotic, uninspired POS you really are. And, as always, you got nothing, you are nothing.

    @HUMBOLT:
The rest of the Raider Nation is waiting for your response to the question: How many SB wins does San Dog have? Last Super Bowl you were in, didn’t you lose 55-14 to San Francisco? “Bucky Beaver” Stan Humphries was your qb in that game wasn’t he? It seems so long ago when you guys were relevant save for the early exit from the playoffs that inevitably happens every year. 14-2 and you still fire Schottenheimer. How has that coaching change worked out so far?

  27. tango says: Sep 2, 2010 4:59 PM

To: aldavisistillindepends: Cable was never formally made the head coach you idiot. Even while Cable was the interim coach, which technically he still is because dead al always needs to play games to feel important, was actively looking to interview others and no one would work for him let alone accept an invitation to interview . By the way ,not one bigoted bone in this body you waste of a human ! If dead al is your god, your in serious trouble but everyone knws that by your language and rambling BS

  28. sraidersteve says: Sep 2, 2010 6:28 PM

tango and humbolt need to seriously get a life..i honestly feel sorry for you guys. Always coming on Raider posts and talking out your a**…worry about your own team winning 1 superbowl and then maybe you can have something to actually brag about but until then worry about your own sorry franchise that you root for that has no storied history at all…

  29. tango says: Sep 2, 2010 7:05 PM

sraidersteve. I am a proud member of the Raider nation but just hate Al Davis and everything he has stoof the past 20 years.

  30. Tinbender says: Sep 2, 2010 8:07 PM

When I was a kid (a long, long time ago) Al Davis put money into a large mall at Foothill and 73rd Ave. in Oakland. Grocery stores wouldn’t even invest in that neighborhood. Al has done some good things outside of football most people don’t know about. He probably doesn’t want anyone to know either, might ruin his reputation. :=)
    Go Raiders

tango you retarded, inbred, bigoted, hillbilly: Take a look at how many REAL members of the Nation are sick of a pathetic, malcontented, idiotic, loser like you. Idiots like you and stunnedbolt shouldn’t be allowed in the coliseum. You shouldn’t be allowed in the coliseum just because a fat pig like you takes up four seats.

    purpledrankNgold;
Remember this, what are the Vikings (Norse Homos) famous for? Getting their asses kicked in FOUR Super Bowls AND having a 15-1 team that scored about a million points in the regular season get SHUT OUT in the NFC Championship game. Go back to your ice fishing and inbreeding.
