More to the point — the cases against the church now number in the thousands… so Brew is suggesting that a supposed 17 cases in one state (i can’t attest to the accuracy of that number, it could be more or less) are somehow worse than other places?

Why would there be a story? Would it affect his play? Athletes screw around on their wives all the time. Athletes conceive children out of wedlock all the time. You need that extra twist (see McNair, Steve) to make an unfaithful athlete newsworthy.
Is it not in a sports writer’s best interest to avoid covering this type of thing? He needs quotes from an athlete to write his “sports” story. If an athlete won’t talk to him because he reported things about his personal life or the life of another athlete, doesn’t that make his job harder to do? If they publish a story after a guy leaves the team, then the current guys still won’t talk to the media because they don’t want their dirty laundry out there when they depart.
Do you realize how huge the Packers are in Wisconsin? Businesses closed down for the day like it was Christmas when they played in Super Bowls because they wouldn’t have enough customers to justify remaining open. If the Packers decide that they don’t want a newspaper or tv station to have as much media access because they write damaging stories about their star players, they can do so.
In Wisconsin, the Packers equal ratings/newspaper circulation. It’s not in the media’s best interest to cover the story. Trust me, if cell phone cameras were around in the mid-90s, there would be plenty of pictures of drunk Brett doing body shots off a college co-ed.
