The Lions’ starters didn’t play well, but the guys who will get cut in Detroit outplayed the guys who will get cut in Buffalo in the second half, and the Lions won the final preseason game 28-23.
Lions S Louis Delmas was among the players held out of the game as a precautionary measure.
The Lions made a somewhat surprising decision not to hold out starting QB Matthew Stafford, and he looked like he needed the work.
Lions RB Kevin Smith is still trying to get confident about his surgically repaired knee.
After finishing the preseason with a 3-1 record, LB Julian Peterson assessed the Lions: “We look real good. We made dramatic strides from last year. You can see the offense can put up points at any time.”
Said Bills coach Chan Gailey, “I thought our first groups went out there and did OK; not great, but OK.”
Said Gailey of the way the backups looked, “In the second half we couldn’t block anybody. They’re strong on the defensive front. First, second, however many groups they’ve got, they’re strong. But it was an awful display by our offensive line at times out there. We’ve got to shore that up in every respect.”
Bills rookie RB C.J. Spiller was given the night off, making Marshawn Lynch the starter. Lynch struggled, with five carries for two yards.
Bills QB Trent Edwards closed the preseason with a passer rating of 102.6.
Drayton Florence picked off a Stafford pass for the Bills and returned 40 yards for a score.
Buffalo’s first played well, second played decent, third… well thats why they have cuts. James Hardy definitely needs to be axed, his injuries have held him back since he came out of Indiana. The second round pick will be lucky to make another teams practice squad. The other WR’s fighting for a roster spot Jones, Roosevelt, Simpson and Nelson didn’t prove anything last night with several drops under Troy QB Levi Brown. TE J.P. Foschi looked as if he were trying out for a NFL “Bumbles and Fumbles” video. The Bills are very thin at the tight end position, which may have saved Foschi from being one of the cut players on the other end of the 53. All in all Buffalo went 2-2, shining compared to last years preseason.

Not sure what you were watching last night, but David Nelson looked good again. In fact, I have not seen him drop a ball in any of the pre-season games. He played only with the starters and didn’t play with Levi Brown which you stated in your post. In my opinion, David Nelson should start along side Lee Evans. Bye, Bye James Hardy.
CJ SPILLER great post,I was at the UB game but I heard the same thing.
Jones blows, Roosevelt blows, Chad jackson blows, steve Johnson blows, insert any other bills reciever except Lee and D Nelson.
Foschi better not make the team just BC he is a TE and we dont have any. Some TE will get cut elsewhere that is better.

Wow, I love how Julian Peterson is a LINEBACKER and he’s talking about how good our OFFENSE is.
To me that’s not a good sign…

I meant to say Hardy, not Nelson. I had Nelson on the brain for some reason. It was Hardy that i meant to say that helped with the several dropped passes under Brown. Besides, Johnson is a better receiver than Nelson. Nelson in my opinion has to learn how to block better. Johnson is a great blocker and with the fact that the team is going to rely on the running game this year I can’t see Nelson beating out Johnson.
-”The Lions’ starters didn’t play well, but”-
jhavid didnt even play. calvin had a great down field block for kevin smith,..who isn’t a starter. stafford was not sacked once. and stafford threw an interception because it was the first attempt at a “no-huddle”, since the NFL tweaked the no-huddle rules this summer.
i expect this from Florio, not you smith.

Ok, I hear what your saying, however I don’t agree with you on Stevie Johnson………I think Johnson will be a questionable starter this year as I think he thought he had the 2nd WR gig locked up and did not try as he has the previous 2 seasons. I still like David Nelson to start along side Lee Evans. He has been the most consistent in camp and pre-season games of all the WR’s.
