Report that Roethlisberger will seek fewer than four games is disputed

A weird week got started with a deliberately false report that Commissioner Roger Goodell would reduce Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger’s six-game suspension by only one game.

Then, a report emerged that Roethlisberger and his representatives would seek a reduction below the presumably hard floor of four games.

Now, Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the second report isn’t accurate.  Per Dulac, Roethlisberger and Steelers president Art Rooney II will not attempt to reduce the suspension beneath four games.

That door isn’t open,” an unnamed source told Dulac.

We’re not prepared to rule out the possibility that Roethlisberger and company had planned to make a push for fewer than four games, and that someone who takes the elevator to the 17th floor of 280 Park Avenue on a daily basis explained that such a request could cause Goodell to conclude that perhaps Roethlisberger doesn’t “get it”, and thus that the suspension shouldn’t be reduced to four games.  Despite some uncertainty that arose last month during a visit from Goodell to Steelers’ training camp, the minimum suspension has at all times been four games.

So it’s possible that the report of an attempt to go below four games was accurate when published, that Roethlisberger’s representatives have since changed their minds (wisely), and that they now are willing to concede that the door to a three-game suspension “isn’t open.”

Meanwhile, it would be fitting if, in the end, Goodell reduces the suspension from six games to five, making the only deliberately false report on the issue the only ultimately accurate report on the issue.

Jesus! How many “reports” do you and the rest of the media have to get wrong before you realize to double or now even triple check your sources? You would think that after being punked by Wise you guys would “wise” up and start doing real journalism. It seems that since you joined the most biased news organization on the planet that you guys have gone downhill when it comes to breaking real “reports”. I understand that you have likely done it so that idiots like me will sit here and complain about it while you hear the cash register go off.
Integrity is a powerful thing. It is something that many people used to take a great pride in having. I suggest that the entire PFT staff and the sports/media world take some pride and get back some of that integrity quickly.

If Goodall reduces this at all he is going to open an can of worms.
Every other suspension he has issued out has not been changed. Now the WHITE Bad Boy asks for a reduction and if Goodall gives it to him ALL CREDIBILITY will be GONE. ALL OF IT.

I guess Sal Paolantonio was wrong. I would believe what the Rooneys say, that they and Ben were not going to ask for less than 3 games. All the clowns that blasted them for attempting to ask for less than 4 games can now all issue their apologies. Yeah, right.
And BTW, she said DTF, and you know what that means, macadamia (a real “nut”). Why did you even bother to post what you did if “who cares”? Another person wasting their time, intentionally. Makes no sense to me.

Of course, they will lobby for fewer games if Art II comes…why not try? Still going to be 4 games because Goodell said that would be lowest possible number, not 3.

  9. Ravenator says: Sep 3, 2010 7:41 AM

Rape a woman (allegedly) and then ask for the suspension to be reduced? Yep, sounds like an idea that would come out of America’s butthole, Pittsburgh PA. The only thing he’d be forgetting is to take Hines with him. I mean someone has to hit Goddell when he’s not looking, right?

  11. hemry27 says: Sep 3, 2010 7:45 AM

FOOL. Goodell said from the start that it could be reduced to 4. This protects him from any backlash because since the very beginning it was made clear that it could be reduced. Assuming he does reduce it and he still catches flack, it will only be from dumb Steelers haters that still think he commited rape even with all the evidence that supports the opposite. Get real you clown.

  20. wryly1 says: Sep 3, 2010 8:44 AM

There’s been no greater signal that Roethlisberger still doesn’t get it than dissing and disowning his hometown. That makes it unmistablably clear he has not yet ‘owned’ his sick behavior.

IDK what message did they send when they reduced Vick’s suspension from 4 to 2?? After all he spent time in FEDERAL prison and was CONVICTED of brutally exterminating dogs after fighting them for money. So yea…why not be benched for 3 times the time of a convicted felon?????

All of America should look on Rothlisberger as not having any class. However the police did not have enough evidence to charge him. The alleged victim was so drunk that she is not credible. A two game suspension is most likely enough in this case. All parents should keep their drunk daughters away from this guy.

  25. EverybodyGotAIDS says: Sep 3, 2010 8:56 AM

Guys, it’s common for victims to be ashamed, not have a clear memory, etc. If she walked in, perfectly calm, and went into detail everything that happened, I’d be LESS inclined to believe her. Rape victims seldom have their “story straight” right off the bat, because a part of them probably can’t even believe it happened at all.
If you don’t believe he did anything, that’s fine. I disagree, but whatever…just don’t point to her having an inconsistent story as proof that she didn’t get raped. If anything, it makes it MORE likely. A gold digger just looking for a quick buck would make sure she had every little detail down.

  26. HardcoreH1 says: Sep 3, 2010 9:09 AM

    _____
You have it backwards. Ben was punished for this because Goodell wanted to make an example of a white QB and because a significant percentage of the black media wanted Ben’s head. If he were black, he would not have been suspended at all. If he were black and were supspended for this Sharpton et al. would have been protesting about suspending a guy for nothing but baseless allegations. Look at all the black guys who have been in trouble but not suspended over the summer (including Eric Foster of the Colts, who was accused of the same thing as Roethlisberger).
This is a racial issue, alright. It’s a white guy taking the fall to appease the black community. Yet it still doesn’t seem to be enough. for folks like Dave the Panther.
Besides, Vick’s suspension was reduced. I guess that your racist double standards allow you to conveniently ignore that.

  28. The Real Shuxion says: Sep 3, 2010 9:17 AM

You need to learn how to read!!!! Goodell had this meeting planned from the day he issued the suspension. He stated that the suspension could be reduced to 4 games and that a meeting would be held before the start of the season to decide. I hate Ben as much as anybody but get your shit straight.

No reduction for Rapesburger….should’ve been the whole season as a matter of fact…since when is it OK for him to do this and get a slap on the hand?
He also embarrassed himself a couple months ago at Muirfield CC in Dublin, OH (home of the Memorial) by demanding to be allowed to play there…fortunately, the club said “no way Jose” and he is reported to have stormed out mad….poor baby got his feelings hurt.
Squeelers are down to Dixon and Smokey Robinson Batch for QB…nice!

  32. Deb says: Sep 3, 2010 9:26 AM

Some of you people are really stupid. Goodell said from the start the suspension would be six games and that he WOULD reduce to four if he felt it was warranted. THAT’S why HE asked Roethlisberger to meet with him today. This has been the plan from the get-go.
Florio, your personal grudge against Roethlisberger is not sufficient reason for a five-game suspension.
@Ravenator … YES, I would feel comfortable leaving any woman in my family with him. The evidence is overwhelming that he has not raped anyone.
@Ravens Macg … Can you produce ONE woman that he has fondled, touched inappropriately, or raped? NO The DA in Georgia said he hoped the accuser and her sorority sisters had learned their lesson. It’s unfortunate that they weren’t charged with filing a false complaint and giving false statements. EVERYTHING they said was refuted by multiple witnesses AND by the medical examination.
@JimmySmith … You are an obsessed jackass.

    @ WhoDeySood5, Ravenator & Ravens Macg …
WhoDey, honey, I’ve been right here.
Boys, I’ve spent a lot of time w/real rape victims and wouldn’t take anyone’s word the sun came up. Roethlisberger’s been a world-class jackass. But I’ve lived in some scary places and know too much about abusive men and predators. The stories about Ben don’t add up to anything more sinister than the average prick on the prowl.
Yeah, I remember Tahoe. She texted friends afterward that she couldn’t wait to see him again. He didn’t call … and a year later she sued for $3 million. The sorority sisters manufactured their story. That’s what the evidence says. And the DA made it pretty clear when he said he hoped they’d learned their lesson.
WhoDey, SI interviewed Georgia’s friends. They said she was obsessed w/Ben before that night. She followed him from club to club, pinching his backside and using his friends to get his attention. She and her pals tried to get him to go back to their place, and HE SAID NO. The medical exam showed she’d already had sex with someone else earlier. She was wearing a pin that said she was “Down to F**k.” Witnesses the press didn’t quote said she was climbing on him to the degree that he looked uncomfortable. Not only did the medical exam RULE OUT the possibility that they’d had intercourse, but she actually COMPLAINED to the COPS that he dumped her in the bathroom and left without a word.
There’s not a snowball’s chance in hell she would have said no to anything.
I’m not under any illusions about Roethlisberger. But unlike the rest of you, I’m not under any illusions about these women either.

  50. Ravenator says: Sep 3, 2010 1:13 PM

  51. Deb says: Sep 3, 2010 5:50 PM

Like I said, Ravenator, I worked in some rough places and known some very dangerous people. And I’ve had guys get drunk and slobber on me, pinch and press up against me when I was trying to do my job, pull me into back hallways and closets when I’d had too much to drink. Those were frat boys. Not rapists. Ben’s a frat boy … and you probably have been, too, at some point in your life. If you’d ever met the dangerous type, you wouldn’t confuse the two. The evidence says those two women cried wolf. No matter what team you support, as a guy, you should be pissed about that.

  52. HardcoreH1 says: Sep 3, 2010 8:27 PM

I knew this thread wouldn’t die without an incompetent Steelers fan mentioning Super Bowl rings. The Steelers aren’t defending champs. They are also in for a bad year. Have fun celebrating your big wins over the Bills, Bucs, and maybe if you’re lucky the Browns. 6-10 this season sweetheart. The AFC North has passed the Steelers by.
