Roethlisberger issues statement regarding his reduced suspension

The Commissioner has spoken, the owner has spoken, and now the player has spoken.

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has issued a statement through the team regarding his suspension, which was reduced from six games to four games earlier today.

“I have learned a lot over the past several months about myself as a person,” Roethlisberger said.  “I am committed to continuing on this path of being the type of person my family raised me to be, and exceeding what is expected of me as the quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers.”

If we thought that Roethlisberger actually wrote the statement, we’d consider raising the fact that he fails to thank Goodell for reducing the suspension or the team for supporting him.  But since Roethlisberger likely didn’t write the statement, it doesn’t really matter.

I agree. No charges = 4 game suspension. Cedric Benson was charged 3 times. DUI,BUI? (Boating under the influence), and assault. The first 2 were dropped and I’m not sure the third has been resolved yet, but that sounds like a pattern of behavior and no suspension.
I’m not a BigBen fan and will not make excuses for the jackass. But the first incident with him was a civil matter , not criminal matter, which I thought the NFL did not get involved with. The second incident was an allegation and no charges were filed so it is very possible that the allegation was completely bogus.
    Am I missing something here?

  21. Pookphi says: Sep 3, 2010 3:46 PM

The Commissioner should have enforced the full 6 game suspension.
    1. Mr. Goodell levied 6 games, not 4. He has undermined the legitimacy of his own initiative with the mixed signals. “We’re going to punish you with a six, no, wait, a four game suspension.” If Mr. Roethlisberger were able to behave well no sanction at all would have been necessary.
    2. Mr. Roethlisberger should have found enough motivation in keeping his job to stay on the straight and narrow.
    3. Regardless of whether criminal charges were filed, Roethlisberger had a contractual obligation to meet certain behavioral standards. He failed. He should pay the price. It’s not as if his good behavior for the past few months is able to undo the bad things he did. You can’t un-ring a bell.

@Whatever897 … A man among boys. Thank you.
@The boys … I have no interest in Roethlisberger off the football field. But I do care about REAL rape victims.
McNulty chose to screw a guy and text her friends she wanted to see him again. When it didn’t go her way, she cried rape and sued for $3 million.
DTF chose to get blotto and climb all over a guy. I don’t know what happened in the bathroom, but it took less than 10 minutes, and according to the medical exam, wasn’t intercourse. She complained to cops that he just dumped her. Then she and her little girlfriends got even by crying rape.
All they’ve done is make life harder for REAL rape victims. Real MEN would resent that as much as I do.

  24. KingOkra says: Sep 3, 2010 3:50 PM

    Goodell- Pathetic jellyfish.
League Conduct Polity- Apparently meaningless if you’re a white quarterback.
Rapistberger- He’ll be more “polite and thoughtful” the next time he’s raping your daughter.
Destroying your credibility as the head of the NFL – Priceless.
On the brightside, maybe he’ll get 6 games the next time. That’ll teach him!

  25. Deb says: Sep 3, 2010 3:55 PM

    @Pookphi …
    You are misinformed.
Commissioner Goodell from the beginning said the six-game suspension would be lowered to four if Roethlisberger met certain conditions. The two-game flexibility was an incentive that was built in to the punishment. It was not a departure from the original punishment.
The letter Commissioner Goodell sent suspending Roethlisberger cited him for reckless abuse of alcohol, nothing more. Since his suspension, other players have been arrested on rape accusations, weapons charges, and assault charges but have not been suspended.
Roethlisberger is the first player in NFL history to face ANY suspension without a single prior disciplinary action, without arrest or charge, without failing a sustance-abuse or PED test, and without violating the league’s gambling policy. The Personal Conduct Policy was amended in order to give Roethlisberger special punishment, it was not amended in order to show him special leniency.

    @ravenfan820 …
I’ve been posting the same stuff since March. He’s behaved like an egomaniacal jackass, but the evidence shows he hasn’t raped anyone. I support the suspension because he needed an intervention.
But Ben was never even arrested, let alone charged, and NFL Security’s internal investigation found that the rape allegation was invented. Ray Lewis was charged with murder and pled to misdemeanor obstruction. Like Ben, he was leading a reckless life that resulted in him being peripherally involved in a murder. Yet he was fined but never suspended. That’s why I believe 4-6 games should have been 2-4. And I resent that Goodell hasn’t suspended other players who have been in worse trouble since Ben. He talks a good game but doesn’t follow through unless the national press is watching.

  34. trickbunny says: Sep 3, 2010 4:28 PM

    Lessons Learned:
-Goodell doesn’t mean what he says.
    -Goodell shows weakness and inconsistency.
-The league office continues to do special favors for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
-RAPISTBERGER (consider me cue’ed) was never going to serve a 6 game suspension in the furst place, so long as he could do what anyone with the smallest bit of willpower could do- keep it in his pants until his little talk with his boy Roger. Wow, what an accomplishment, Ben.
-If I’m an NFL player who gets into trouble, I make it public that I, too, deserve special and/or inconsistent treatment like Rapeherfurburger.
Good going Roger. Enjoy your can of worms.

I can deal with the guys who clearly have a football agenda. The ones who feign an interest in sexual assault disgust me.
The evidence in Nevada shows clearly that the sex between Roethlisberger and Andrea McNulty was consensual. Rape victims don’t text their friends the next day to tell them how much they look forward to seeing their rapists again. The evidence in Georgia shows clearly that NO intercourse occurred between Roethlisberger and his accuser. In actual intercourse, as alleged, men leave behind semen, pubic hair, and/or lubricant and other evidence of a condom. And it’s impossible for a man to insert his penis into a woman’s vagina as she sits on a toilet–unless he’s the Tidy Bowl man.
The Georgia DA said he hopes the accuser and her friends have learned their lesson. That’s pretty clear, don’t you think?
If you had ANY real interest in assault issues, you’d be appalled by the two women crying wolf.

Poo flinging monkeys, ok I can get that – this is after all a football blog so the comments here do have mighty low intellectual value – but at least get your facts straight.
I’ve been calling Ray an overrated blowhard for years, as well as a thug – but no matter how much I despise the guy, I can’t call him a murderer, because I simply don’t know if he was really that involved.
That said, the words “Ben Roethlisberger” and “fathead” certainly do belong in the same sentence. How ironic.
Talk is cheap, we will see if he can back it up with action, as he’s promising.

  47. Richm2257 says: Sep 3, 2010 5:44 PM

Deb, maybe you can get it through your fat head that sexual assault isn’t necessarily “intercourse”. Roethlisberger was accused of forcing a young woman to perform oral sex on him against her will – regardless of whether she was “all over him” or not – behind a closed bathroom door with a bodyguard blocking the other side. I don’t know why you have such a hard time understanding that, or that regardless of what clothes or jewelry a woman is wearing, forced sex is forced sex, intercourse or otherwise.
I still have yet to see you say that you think a 28 year old man – let alone an NFL quarterback -should be having oral sex of ANY kind behind the closed doors of a restroom with a 20 year old college girl, even if it WERE “consensual”.
Steelers fans and Roethlisberger lovers will cling to the mantra that “no charges were filed”, completely ignoring the fact that Roethlisberger settled with this girl…… HE PAID HER OFF!!!!!!
Do innocent people pay off liars, or do they go after them for slander?

  48. EverybodyGotAIDS says: Sep 3, 2010 5:44 PM

Correct me if I’m wrong, but the last time I checked it’s not 1790 anymore….and there are other things that are considered rape.
Let me break it down for you. If lil Ben went in the victim…..anywhere…..and she didn’t want it or was too drunk to consent to it……that’s rape. From what I’ve heard, she was both drunk and didn’t want it.
And also, no it isn’t impossible to have sex with a girl sitting on the toilet. “Sitting on the toilet” doesn’t necessarily mean you’re sitting like you normally would. If she were leaning back (or forced against the back of the toilet….as the case may be) and she put her legs up in the air (or were forced up in the air….as the case may be), it’s completely possible. Trust me.

    @EverybodyGotAIDS …
Yes, hon, I know there are a lot of ways a penis can penetrate. But you don’t get to define the act. SHE does. And SHE said VAGINAL RAPE. So according to her written statement …
    She went to the potty.
Ben joined her as she came out.
    They started kissing.
Wound up rolling around on the hallway floor
(It’s a tiny hallway, so maybe the bodyguard supposedly guarding the door was doing the splits–you know, like Van Damme with a foot on each wall hovering over them).
She got up, went into the bathroom.
    He followed.
    She “said no.”
He removed enough of her clothing to gain access.
And that’s when the 6’5″ guy and the woman sitting on the 14″ toilet had nonconsensual vaginal intercourse.
And he didn’t leave a pindrop of semen or a single pubic hair or any trace of a condom.
    He finished and left.
She recovered from this trauma, dressed, and left.
All in the 10 minutes that multiple witnesses said she was out of sight?
That’s your story and you’re sticking to it?
So … you’re a fantasy reader. Did you enjoy the Harry Potter series?

    @Richm2257 …
Rich, I know there are different kinds of assault, but SHE is the one who gets to decide what happened to her–not you guys. And SHE said it was VAGINAL RAPE. The medical exam says that did not happen. No, what a woman wears does not have any bearing on sexual assault. The issue with the DTF pin is that she TOLD the man she was “Down to F**k.”
Rich, there’s no love lost between the Steelers and Pats, but we both know your rancor goes to a different level. A couple of Pats fans told me that some of our fans did a Bernard Pollard fan club, so maybe that’s it. That’s hideous, but it has nothing to do w/this.
Andrea McNulty texted friends the day after that she was looking forward to seeing Ben again. At the time she claimed to be crying in her truck post “rape,” she was texting her boyfriend that he looked like Ben. They have the texts. The woman wasn’t raped.
Georgia and her sorority sisters tried to get Ben to come to their place and he declined. A sorority sister started ragging him about McNulty; he threw her out of the party. The bodyguard wouldn’t readmit her and her friend. Georgia was out of sight only 1
But these two women are not victims. That and the trial by media are why I get so angry, not because of Ben per se. Of course, I love him as a QB. Off the field, he’s been an ass who brought a lot of this on himself.

Crap, Rich, I hit the submit button and don’t know what I submitted. I was trying to be reasonable with you. Think I was in mid-sentence about …
She was out of sight only 10 minutes. The two women Ben tossed from the party are the ones who dragged her to the cops and said she was raped. She said she wasn’t. The medical exam said she wasn’t. Then she said she was. The DA said he hoped she and her sorority sisters learned their lesson–that’s not what prosecutors say about rape victims.
These two women are not victims. That and the trial by media are why I get so angry, not because of Ben per se. Of course, I love him as a QB. Off the field, he’s been an ass who brought a lot of this on himself. You’re not a stupid guy. He’s not a rapist. Leave the animosity on the field.

Florio what is your deal? Do you just try to say dumb things or do they just come natural to you? I assume you know Ben personally to know what he does and doesn’t say in meetings correct? More over who is this “we” you are talking about in your story? Are you talking for NBC? That is pretty bold. I mean doesn’t it get old just pulling out BS Big Ben stories and headlines just so people will actually real your stuff? Why don’t you just come out and tell everyone that you don’t like the guy, it would be much better that way. Just like you sounded stupid on ESPN 1250 Pittsburgh saying that Dennis Dixon didn’t get a chance to play because Mike Tomlin didn’t want to start a locker room war you are sounding pretty rediculous right now. Why don’t you stop while you are “ahead”.

I wouldn’t thank Goodfornothing either. He got suspended but he didn’t even get charged. Has this ever happened to a african american player. Not trying to be a a-hole, just wondering. I think Goodfornothing is trying to show the AA players that hes tuff on white players as well. I just think the man should be charged before he gets suspended. I also find it hard to believe that neither prosecutor brought charges. Most lawyers and DAs have massive egos, and a rape case against a 2 time SB(sorry seahawks fans) champ would be a career case. My guess is they realized that it was all BS. A few gold diggers got drunk and stupid thats all it was. And don’t tell me- oh a 2nd time hes accused it must be true, if your trying to fleece a fool for his money Big Ben was the perfect target the 2nd time around. Everyone thinks he did it, and with no real proof. I’m not even a steelers fan, in fact I hate them. I’m a classless Eagles fan. But the truth of it is that chicks care about 1 thing MONEY.

Also I would like to say for those people better then me- Yes I will be trying to bang college girls until I can’t get wood any more. So a 28 year old guy can’t get a BJ from a drunk college girl???????????????? Do you wormburners remember going to college or to your buddies college? Do you remember how easy it was to score with those hot early 20s foxes? This guy did nothing wrong, except hes not fighting the comish enough on it. Stop being gay guys, unless you are a skin flute player then keep on doing what your doing.
