Chase Coffman cut before ever playing a snap for Bengals

Taken in the third round of the 2009 draft as the most productive pass-catching tight end in NCAA history, Chase Coffman won’t ever play a regular season snap for the Bengals.

The team cut him on Saturday after he struggled with a foot injury, and then blocking as a pro.  It’s sad to see him dumped, but this can’t be a surprise for anyone that watched Hard Knocks last year.  Coffman was lucky not to get cut then.

The Bengals also waived/injured fullback Fui Vakapuna and waived Abdul Hodge.  (Man, Tebow’s power is far-reaching.)  We mentioned Matt Jones was waived earlier. Here are the rest of the Bengals cuts:

Kicker Dave Rayner, guard Isaac Sowells, safety Marvin White, defensive tackle Orien Harris, safety Kyries Hebert, tight end Darius Hill, running back James Jones, defensive tackle Clinton McDonald, safety Rico Murray, wide receiver Maurice Purify, wide receiver Dezmon Briscoe, guard Otis Hudson, tackle Gabriel Manns, safety Jeromy Miles, linebacker Vincent Rey, tackle Chris Rodgers, cornerback Johnny Sears, and fullback Joe Tronzo.

Mike Nugent won the team’s kicker battle.  Wide receivers Quan Cosby and Jerome Simpson both made the team.

this was surprising to me as was the reggie nelson pickup. the bengals current backup safeties seem better than nelson

Yeah. Losing Coffman sucks, especially for a guy like Daniel Coats. How about you post the trade (steal) that the Bengals pulled for Reggie Nelson, Florio?

He was invisible in the preseason. I only remember him catching 1 pass.

James Johnson was cut not James Jones

This is very sad…Seemed to be a good guy from the Hard Kocks show… Id bet he ends up on a team soon.. He is more of a #3 or 4 WR anyways

He’ll be back in 2 weeks after Leonard is back and Coats is cut.
That is, if someone else doesn’t pick him up first.

Nelson will be a back up safety, only a better one than the one we gave them.

The money the Bengals have wasted on high draft picks over the last 20 years could support a third world country.
Not to mention this season’s generous donation to the Antonio Bryant retirement fund.

A TE who cannot block is really just a big slow WR. That’s why he’s gone, he can’t block at all. Of course, he never really had to in college.
Also, just because he was an all time leader in college, doesn’t mean he’ll make a successful pro. Just ask Andre Ware.

Chase’ plight on Hard Knocks was endearing… Glad to see support for the team and the player here rather than the usual personal attacks by the armchair NFL experts that comment on these stories..

poo- good call. i remember saying this very thing about the guy when we drafted him. most productive TE in college history because he lined up standing in the slot. dude never blocked but took advantage of being a “tight end” and getting guarded by linebackers. woulda been a decent pick last year to sit behind reggie but instead kelly destroyed his achilles. oh well. good luck, kid.

so this means coats is our fullback, or am i forgetting someone. or is that an unnecesary position at this point with the plethora of backs we have? i agree he may get cut when leonard comes back. honestly i am so pumped for this year bengals fans. tom brady here we come!!!!!!!!!!

It’s true a tight end that can’t block and can’t run fast is not likely to get far in the nfl. But there is still hope for him, he is a terrific athlete and has great hands, so i think he will work his way in somewhere and if he would learn to block at an acceptable level and get some playing time and some confidence he could be really good.

Brian Leonard is already listed on the 53 man roster. So Coats will get in there block well like he always does and drop 90% of the passes thrown his way as he always does. The other 10% he catches he soon loses as he runs so go figure.I do not know how the guy stays in this league.Chase will land on his feet[hopefully not too hard they seem delicate] with a team that needs his strengths and will use them.

Abdul Hodge had enormous promise coming out of Iowa. Injuries took their toll.
Sorry to see this happen to him.

  19. BagsFlyFree says: Sep 5, 2010 1:57 AM

Coats is indeed the fullback right now. Vakapuna was cut. Skuta is on the 53 so maybe he’ll fill in. Fullback wasn’t really needed anyways. But I’d rather have Coffman than Coats. And I’d rather have Vincent Rey than JT Osullivan.

He would be a good fit with Big Red.
