Panthers ax Hunter Cantwell, keep Pike

During the spring, the Panthers’ coaching staff insisted time and time again that Hunter Cantwell was a legitimate contender for the team’s No. 2 quarterback job, behind Matt Moore.  Cantwell worked ahead of second-round pick Jimmy Clausen in OTAs.

By the preseason opener, it’d become clear Cantwell posed no challenge to Clausen.  Clausen ran the second-team offense exclusively, playing well.
Now, Cantwell has been waived.  The Panthers have instead kept sixth-round rookie quarterback Tony Pike as a third-stringer.
Other early Panthers cuts include offensive tackle Rob Petitti and linebacker Mortty Ivy.

Good. He was by far the worst option the Panthers had.

bad cut, i would’ve told Pike he was cut. Cantwell is a good 3rd stringer or 2nd stringer, he’s just not better than Clausen or Moore. i think he’s better than Pike though.
