Report: Steelers lean toward Charlie Batch as Week One starter

With Ben Roethlisberger suspended and Byron Leftwich injured and Dennis Dixon not ready, the guy who’ll likely start the Steelers’ regular-season opener is the guy who got the fewest offseason, training camp, and preseason reps with the starters.

Charlie Batch.

Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the Steelers are “likely” to give Batch the nod against the Falcons.

For now, though, Batch hasn’t been told he’ll get the assignment.

“You look back, we had three solid guys who were
able to go in, step in, if needed,” Batch said.  “Now we’re down to two.
Over the weekend, they’ll determine what’s going to happen.  Either way,
I’ll be ready to go.”

Four years ago, Batch learned on Labor Day weekend that he’d be starting the Thursday night season opener against the Dolphins, after Roethlisberger underwent an emergency appendectomy.  That night, Batch completed 15 of 25 passes for 209 yards and three scores, good for a passer rating of 126.5.  He has started one game since then — the 2007 regular-season finale, against the Ravens.

Before Leftwich’s injury on the most recent Thursday night, Batch was in danger of being cut.  He’ll now potentially lead the way for the first four games of the season.

Yes Florio, this “report” has already been posted on PFT about 4 times now. I realize that since the Steelers are your favorite team you think that every thing involving them should be posted by you and only you, but next time check your own site to see if something regarding the steelers has already been “reported” on here by someone else.

IT’S A CONSPIRACY!!! The Steelers don’t want Dixon to play because then they could win! And then Dixon wants a huge contract but he gets stuck behind Ben! And then they have to trade him but they run the risk of Ben getting suspended again! Thanks PFT for making me a great analytical thinker

The best part is even if the Steelers do start 0-4 they’ll still finish ahead of the Browns. It’s going to be a long football season in Cleveland now that they don’t have LeBron there to distract them mid-season which usually around the time the Browns have been eliminated from the playoff hunt.

Before Leftwich got injured, I said the Steelers should consider Batch after the way he played in the 3rd preseason game. Charlie is a very capable player with a lot of experience. Being able to run the football and play better defense than last year will be keys to the Steelers in their 4 games without Ben.
If anyone thinks they Steelers will lose all 4 of the their games without Ben, you will be sadly mistaken. Ben is a game breaker, but none of the other QBs are. I fully expect other Steelers to really step up their game while Ben is out to help ensure high chance of winning. Please don’t let your jealousy of the Steelers get in the way of using good judgement.

And Florio BTW, you have now gone from basically implying that Dixon might be better than Ben to saying he now is not ready to play. While most of us Steeler fans thought the latter because of how he has been handled by the Steeler coaches, you look like you move in whatever direction the wind blows, just to generate some headlines. LOL.

Hey Brownsfn19, no disrespect, but Jake Delhomme? Really? And you post what you just did about the Steelers??!! How many wins to do see the Browns having this year? Honestly. HAHAHAHAHAHA!!
But in any event, wait until 10/17/10, then you can really cry about something, when the Steelers beat the tar out of the Browns in Ben’s return at Heinz Field. Have fun until then.

“You Blockhead!” Charlie Batch still has more reps than Brett Favre this year. Plus he has been with the Steelers since the Chuck Noll era.

Kind of like the Browns did last year to knock you f*cks out of the playoff race…hahahaha…8 sacks…we should be able to rack up 10 next game…
by the way have fun in the basement this year Steeler fans…

Ed Bouchette is a good, plugged in reporter. However, I’ve found that he is often wrong on predictions such as this one. Ed has been down on Dixon this entire training camp, and this prediction just seems to continue that trend. Plenty of other plugged in Pittsburgh media folks are calling it an almost certainty that Dixon will get the start. But, I applaud Bouchette. Sometimes you got to stir the pot if you want to make the big bucks.
I also wonder – what is Ed’s relation to the Waterboy, Bobby Boucher?

Has it gotten so bad in Cleveland that beating the Steelers once every 6 years is something to be proud of? Yes…yes it has.

    @ brownsfn19:
Stupid stains fan. Too bad there’s nothing to talk about with your sorry ass team. You spend all your time on the Steelers posts trying to convince yourself that that team of losers called the stains will not finish last in the division AGAIN. Sorry dude, we ain’t buying it. Sell it somewhere else.
Go Big Ben and go STEELERS!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am now starting to think that Goodell did the Steelers a favor and the Rooneys cooperated by letting Goodell do the suspension instead of the team’s doing it which they are allowed to under the conduct policy (See Smith, Steve). I bet more (not a LOT but MORE)Steelers fans were disgusted with the morals of their QB before Goodell suspended him. Since Goodell was “the heavy” Steelers fans have put aside any thoughts they may have had about BR being a complete turd of a person (Note I don’t say rapist as I don’t think he is one)and rallied behind him and hate big bad Goodell.
BRILLIANT on the part of the Rooneys I must say.

  22. Holeinone09 says: Sep 5, 2010 1:37 PM

brownsfn19, yes I know. When you guys beat the Steelers last year, it was your Super Bowl. Congrats on finally winning one! That is all that matters to Browns fans. You can lose the other 14 games, but you pray that you beat the Steelers, at least once out of the 2 meetings. You are still enjoying I see. That’s nice when someone is so happy about something so trivial.
It won’t happen this year though. Just wait for 10/17/10 when Ben returns. It will be a rough day for the Browns, bank on it.

Ed Bouchette is overrated. while he may have connections to some football insiders b/c of local media glorify’s the guy, i know personally he one with alcohol.
the fact that the “team insider” wrote an article stating Batch has risen from the depths of the unknown is not surprising. if the local media has a chance, they will resurrect Batch to mayor if they could. Batch may have more awareness and experience, he doesnt exactly throw darts like he used to and i give him just the single start before he is also injured.
i say its Dixon’s time, to find out if we should continue to support him in his development or cut ties with him in the offseason and find Ben’s future replacement in the draft.
