you can only wonder what both sides are thinking,on vj side his agents should know it would difficult to get a multi year deal with a 20-30 mil guaranteed for a client who has issues and is one drink away from a year long suspension, not from this team. a.j smith heavy hand greatly exacerbated the problem when he exercised the team right under the cba to reduce the tender offer, if a guy will not play for 3.2mil he sure as hell want play for .5mil, just because you can do a thing does not make it wise to do it. then he take further punitive action by placing the player on the roster exempt list further reducing his trade value, the whole roster exempt nonsense needs to address in the next cba because it is counter productive to both sides unless you a punitive mind g.m like a.j smith. i can easily see a scenario where the charger come an agreement with Marcus Mcneill tomorrow for 35mil with 20mil guaranteed but of course he want be available for the next 3 games because of the roster exemption list suspension, mean while in game 2 ( while Mcneill is at home counting his money, who gives a shit about a game check when you have 20mil in bank) brandyn dombrowski blows a block, rivers get sack and hurt, seperate shoulder out 6-8 weeks. if you are a charger fan remember a couple year ago you lost a game to the cowboys that you could have won if gates is not serving his 3 games roster exemption suspension. dean spanos need to relieve him of the duties of doing contracts and free him up do what he does best, player personel.

Let me clarify - the similarity with Turner is how badly AJ handled both.
There is no way the Chragers get a 3rd round pick as compensation, but suppose for a moment they do. That pick will be in the 2012 draft. How in the world does taking a 3rd rd pick in 2012 help you now? How does turning down any 3rd round pick in the 2011 draft in the hope you get a 3rd round pick a year later?
AJ turned down 2nd round for Turner and could have got a deal like Buffalo did for McGahee - he settled for a 5th round pick 2 years later. Genius!
He has decided VJ is a lost cause so why wait for the league to award you compensation in the 2012 draft when you can have a certain thing in 2011? Plus there is no guarantee whether compensatory picks will be a part of the new CBA.
VJ may be all the terrible things being said about him - but the product on he field is poorer for his absence. AJ's ego has him believeing he can screw with quality players and still make the SuperBowl. Then he flexes his muscles to put the player in their place - an in the process gets ridiculous value like he did for Turner, Brees, and thinks he is helping to build an elite team.
This was an 8-8 team two years ago, it would not be a shock to see them finish with less than 10 wins this year. They are the best team in the AFC West, because their competition is so bad, but while AJ is proving his points the other teams are improving their roster.

# SD Chargers Crackback says: September 5, 2010 4:36 PM
The Chargers are a weaker team without Jackson. I wish they could find a way to bring him in. If he's willing to do a one year deal with another team, why not San Diego? Has AJ poisoned the relationship that badly? Maybe AJ is just playing some heavy poker here, and waiting for a team to get desperate and do something stupid. It seems, at least, Jackson is getting desperate NOT to sit out this season. All that talk that Jackson, McNeill, and Revis were "very comfortable" missing the 2010 season was just smoke and mirrors.

Some of the reports I read said that when McNeil came in to talk to A.J. he was willing to sign the original tender offer. AJ's response, supposedly, was that Jackson could sign the $600,000 reduced offer or go home, and that he wouldn't talk to him any further unless he was already under contract. Doesn't look like AJ is really trying to bring either player back to the team. If the story about McNeil were true, a sane individual would recognize that as a huge win and have the player sign immediately. If this is just some pissing contest for AJ, then he shouldn't be in a management position. A smart manager (or business person in general) doesn't allow their emotions to interfere with the deal. They make their decisions based solely on what's good for the company.

# BigFatDog says: September 5, 2010 4:04 PM
Kevin Acee is reporting exact opposite - it was Jacksons salary demands that prevented a trade. Obviously if say the Raiders or Colts had a one year deal and offered a 5th that wouldnt be acceptable for SD, so your report needs more information, PFT.

The problem with this statement is that you can't necessarily trust Acee's reporting on this issue. Not saying he's a bad reporter, nor that he's dishonest. The problem is that his sources are almost certainly in the Chargers front office. How would the Chargers front office now the details of Jackson's discussions with another team's front office. The only negotiating the Chargers need to do with that team involves compensation for a trade. They have no need to know what kind of deal that team would come to with Jackson. It seems more likely to me that the Chargers front office is planting stories with the local reporter to create the spin they want. The sources for this story, however, are likely either connected to Jackson or the other team's front office. If the source is connected to Jackson, it's as unreliable as Acee's piece for the same reason...the source is biased. If the source comes from the other team's front office (or is confirmed by someone there), then it's likely the closest thing to what's really happening, as the PR battle between the Chargers and Jackson doesn't really affect them.

@SoFlorSteeler
Sorry man, but your argument simply doesn't hold up. This isn't about proving a point leading up to the cba. The Jets want to sign Revis to a huge extension...just not as huge as he wants it to be. In fact, they were the ones that first approached Revis.
Also, if your theory were right in Jackson and McNeil's case, then it's just a remarkably poor business practice. A.J. may come off as being tough on players, but he also comes across as a douche that would rather deprive his team of real value just to screw over Jackson. If the Chargers are moving on without Jackson, they should trade him and at least get value for him. If their intention isn't to make a permanent split with Jackson, then they've shot themselves in the foot. When the new cba is put in place, Jackson will be an UFA. He has the time in, and that's not likely to change in the new cba. The owners are looking to alter the revenue sharing percentage, increase the length of the regular season, and alter the rookie salary scheme. That's quite a huge change. The league will not torpedo any chance of coming to a deal that gets them most of what they want in those issues to try and force a change in the time required to reach free agency as well.
So, in the meantime, Jackson and McNeil (both pro-bowlers) sit at home, the Chargers get neither the players or anything in exchange for them, and every player in the league sees what A.J. is doing. What free agent with options in his right mind would sign with a team that would rather hurt itself than negotiate with it's own pro-bowl players? The money would have to be more than they could get elsewhere, and the Chargers won't pay that kind of money to bring someone in. Now, what happens as their other young players approach the end of their contracts? Do they sign on with the Chargers and risk A.J. coming after them next, or do they skip town for a team with a reputation for being more player friendly? Sure, they could slap the franchise tag on a couple of those players, but that costs a lot of money and doesn't guarantee you'll be able to keep them down the road.
So, considering the likely ramifications of A.J.'s actions, the Chargers are stupid if they're doing this to take one for the team. Not to mention, the fact that another team wanted to trade for Jackson means that their "teammates" in the league are actively working against this supposed team goal. The simple fact is that both sides need each other. The players can't make anywhere near as much money playing elsewhere, and if the teams decided to go with other players, they'd basically be playing a season full of preseason games. You've seen how popular they are. The only reason they sell as many tickets as they do for preseason games is that season ticket holders are required to buy preseason tickets as well. The leverage the players have in this case is that they're not simply employees, they're the product. The leverage that the teams have is that they generate the market and distribute the product. Without the other, neither side makes a whole lot of money.

This scenario is very similar to Michael Turner's a few years back. AJ slapped a 1st and 3rd tag on him. He over played his hand and ended up with nothing. Turner signed his tender and one year later he signed with Atlanta. Then the year after AJ got a 5th round compensation pick - yes AJ sure taught Turner a thing or two.
Meanwhile Buffalo, those guys AJ left traded McGahee for 2 third round picks - yes AJ sure showed the rest of the league he isn't going to be taken advantage of.
Now the Bolts head into the 2010 season and AJ has got their RB situation squared away. There is Sproles being paid $7+ as a franshise RB and Matthews who AJ had to trade away the farm to move up and get. AJ is one shrewd operator. The rest of the league is light years behind this guy.
Prediction: SD fails to make the SuperBowl and AJ gets another 5th round pick as compensation in the 2012 draft...then trades away a #1, #2, #3 to move up to take a WR in the draft.

Looks like VJ actually was still asking for too much. And from the sound of it, the Chargers dropped their asking price on compensation:
<a href="http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2010/sep/05/jackson-prices-himself-out-trade/" rel="nofollow">http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2010/sep/05/jackson-prices-himself-out-trade/</a>
Jackson prices himself out of trade
By Kevin Acee, UNION-TRIBUNE
Sunday, September 5, 2010 at 8:48 a.m.
The Seattle Seahawks continued to talk to Vincent Jackson's representatives on Saturday, but "the price was too high," according to a source familiar with the dealings.
That is, the price Jackson was asking was still too high.
I don't know exactly what that price is, but Clark Judge from CBSSports.com talked to one NFC general manager who indicated it was darn near the price reported two weeks ago that was a week later disputed by one of Jackson's agents.
Judge cites the unnamed G.M. saying the Chargers started by asking for the same thing they'd essentially been asking for all offseason -- first-round and third-round picks -- but that price dropped to "almost anything."
The Chargers placed a first-and-third tender on Jackson back in March. That gave Jackson a $3.268 million one-year deal with the Chargers and the right to negotiate with other teams. Had another team signed Jackson, it would have also had to give the Chargers those two draft picks (or another negotiated price).
That did not happen, and Jackson and left tackle Marcus McNeill, also unhappy with his contract status, had their tenders

With the players you said, they need a LOT more than VJ. That's not talent, that's a bunch of guys for the waiver wire.
Jets: 5-11
Exactly...all those players were on the waiver wire and the Jets claimed them.

Clark Judge disagrees:
At first, one NFC general manager told me, they asked for first- and third-round draft picks as compensation, but when that didn't fly they lowered their demands. In the end, he said, the price dropped so much so that, by the close of business Saturday, "they'd take almost anything."
Yet no deal was made, and there's a reason.
"The money," he said. "It's way too much. They're asking for more than Brandon Marshall [five years, $50 million], and there's no way people are interested."

Right all those horribly thrown "jump balls" that VJ comes down with is actually making Rivers look bad.
Oh wait VJ has the highest success rate going off some football metrics. Who is making who look good again?

Agree wholeheartedly with SoFlor Steeler. The players and their agents NEED to be taught a lesson, and the two players he mentioned are the poster children for his point. Both are being punished, and slapped down HARD. I'm a Charger fan, and would have loved to see V.J. back in action with the team this season. But, making sure that the player EMPLOYEES understand that they do NOT call the shots is more important to the long-term health of the league. Let those greedy bastards sit and rot.
