As expected, Revis deal was all about guaranteed money

For weeks, we were led to believe that the Jets and cornerback Darrelle Revis were looking at two options — a 10-year career deal and a short-term bridge until the two sides could sign a 10-year career deal.

In the end, Revis apparently got the kind of truly guaranteed money for which he was looking, and a chance to reload with another big-money deal in four years, if not sooner.

The four-year, $46 million deal represents a $25 million raise over the $21 million Revis was due to earn over the last three of his rookie deal.  More importantly, Revis saw his guaranteed money increase from zero dollars and zero cents to, reportedly, $32 million.

Sure, before his holdout Revis had $20 million in guarantees that would have been triggered in 2011, but before Revis could get there he had to get through 2010 with $1 million in pay — and without a Leon Washington-style injury.

We’ll assume that the $32 million in guaranteed money represents truly and fully guaranteed money, either in the form of signing bonus or money guaranteed both for skill and injury.  Truly guaranteed money — not total dollars — had long been the source of the impasse, with Revis wanting to get the kind of protection that he craved against a catastrophic injury.

The problem was that, on an ultra-long-term deal, the associated guarantees would have likely been $50 million or more, and the Jets have been in the recent habit of giving players guaranteed money that wasn’t truly guaranteed.  So if the $32 million is truly and fully guaranteed, Revis still gets enough to buy more than enough security for himself and a generation or two (or more), and Revis also will get a second bite at the apple in 2014.

Moving forward, here’s hoping that the Jets included enough inducements and/or penalties to ensure that Revis won’t stage his third career holdout come 2012 or 2013, after he pockets most of the new money, perhaps wins an AP defensive player of the year award or two, gets his fingerprints on the Lombardi, and then gets in his head the notion that he wants to be not only the highest-paid cornerback in the game, but the highest-paid player at any position.

To hell with all the douches who were demanding the Jets pay Revis Nnamdi Asomugha money (15 million+). He ended up settling for an average of 11.5 — which will leave us some cash to get David Harris signed…
    Win for Jets management…

I really hope this early and obscene contract comes back to bite the Jets in the butt. The short sighted owners are going to destroy football.

Tannenbaum is and was a cap guy who knows nothing about football. Look at all his moves. He doesn’t get gems or anything he just trades For or signs a bunch of guys he’s heard of. This teams recieving corps will be looking for a big payday after this year, as will crimartie. They have zero depth at any if their position..they are just top heavy.
They have only 8 draft picks from the last 2 years. Next year they are already missing picks
For next tears draft. This is a 1 year window.

Revis is the real deal and def makes the Jets D much better. Which is very necessary because Sanchize remains the QB, and well, open your eyes Jets fans. 9-7.

Kinda funny reading this, & the comments.
The bottom line… Revis got $11 million more guaranteed, and gave the Jets 1 more year.
Nice to see the Jets didn’t cave.
Revis agents finally woke up to the market.
They could’ve gotten this deal done weeks ago, had his agents been realistic.
Hopefully, he’s in some type of shape, and doesn’t suffer any injury.

I’m a chiefs fan and that quickly makes me a realist! People can say what they want about these jets but they are serious folks. They got a number 1 defense and they improved it! They added a superbowl MVP receiver and made the top center and for now the top cb very motivated. All of you fans of other teams in that division better get ready to check emotion and deal with reality. The only weekness I see is sanchez. After watching hard knocks he seems like a slow brain. Also very unfocused with childish antics and a lot of doubt in himself. He needs more motivation. He feels too safe with his position. Brunell may be out there by midseason. Then your screwed.

Nice deal revis. I hate the Jets, but this is a good one. Paging Mr. Lankins!

I have as many problems with Florio as anyone, but in 20 years I would be willing to bet that Florio will be worth millions and Revis will be broke.

  25. Terrell Blowens says: Sep 6, 2010 1:09 PM

Please, salary cap, come back soon. It will be hilarious when the Jets have to manage the big contracts of Revis, Mangold, Sanchez, all of their previous free agent signings/trade acquisitions, and eventually Shonn Greene

  26. BP says: Sep 6, 2010 1:29 PM

Only a franchise as dysfunctional as the jets could end up throwing money at a guy with three years left on his contract. Chalk this one up to fatso’s big yap.

  27. oakradar13 says: Sep 6, 2010 2:51 PM

For all the people out there that think of the Jets as a sure pick for the Superbowl, even to win it all, I would think again. If we look back to last year before the playoffs, the Jets had to face the Colts. If they Colts had been dying for perfection, they would have beaten the Jets with pleasure. However, they benched Peyton Manning and most of their starters, and watched Painter waste away their chance at perfection. If Peyton Manning had stayed in the game, the Jets would not have won and would not have made the playoffs. The Jets were lucky to make the playoffs. However they made an outstanding run in the playoffs. The question is, with Revis, are the Jets the playoff team from last year, or the regular season team from last year?
