Four Steelers captains include no quarterbacks

In 2008, after four seasons with the team, Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger finally was embraced by his teammates, elected as offensive co-captain along with receiver Hines Ward.  Last year, even with an allegation of sexual assault pending against him in Nevada, Roethlisberger joined Wards and the rest of the six team captains.

This year, the Steelers again will have two offensive captains, but Ben isn’t one of them.  Joining Ward in 2010 will be tight end Heath Miller.

The team announced a quartet of captains this morning.  They are Ward and Miller for the offense, linebacker James Farrior for the defense, and linebacker Keyaron Fox on special teams.

Farrior has been defensive captain or co-captain since 2004.  From 2004 through 2006, he shared the honor with Joey Porter.  Last year, Farrior and James Harrison were the defensive captains.

In 2009, Fox and kicker Jeff Reed served as the special-teams captains.  This year, Reed’s decision to publicly complain about his contract status and a string of off-field incidents dating back to early 2009 could have cost him ballots in the players-only vote, which for many football teams likely are counted exclusively by the head coach.  (And all that that implies.)

The election of two offensive captains from the outset of the season likely cuts off any effort by Roethlisberger to finagle the attachment of a “C” to his jersey after his four-game suspension ends.  Of course, if he truly has changed, he’ll be more concerned about earning the renewed respect and trust of his teammates, not politicking for it.

This is Ben’s team. He doesn’t need to do the pregame coin flip thing to confirm that.

What would it say about your organization if you elected someone a captain that is suspended for violating the personal conduct policy this season?
Captain Goodell ruled their was no violation last year, so it didn’t look as bad then as it would have now…

Looks like the Steeler players are showing the type of class that is sorely missing from a great many of their fans.

Well, either they would make a guy who wouldn’t be starting when Ben gets back. Or make Ben a captain while suspended?
So choices make a back-up QB a captain???
Or make a rapist a captain???
I like the one they decided which is niether.

For all the talk of the “old ” Steelers there are close to 20 players on their 53 who have three years or less in the league, including a whopping number of draft choices.
So that’s why the Steelers opted to bring some of their vets back like El, Foote, BMac and, of course, Leftwich.
    Always retooling.

There’s nothing to read into this, it’s not like they were going to elect a captain who is suspended for four games.

yes yes yes the fans have no sense maybe the players do

Rapists should not be Captains, unless of course the team is the prison team

  9. Richm2257 says: Sep 6, 2010 11:53 AM

    Not elected a Co-Captain????
Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo………………. that ought to convince him – as if endless media attacks and possible prosecution weren’t enough – that Roethlisberger needs to take this rape allegation bullsh-t more seriously!

Yeah Florio because Ben isn’t captain means nobody likes him on the team. That’s why they traded him for a 5th round draft pick. Or err…you’re an idiot Florio.

The people who KNOW Ben didn’t rape anyone:
Andrea McNulty & the Georgia accuser
    Georgia authorities
    NFL Security & Roger Goodell
NFL PLAYERS because many have been falsely accused and ALL know they could be.
However, the team also knows Ben wouldn’t be in this situation if he hadn’t been out getting sloppy drunk at a college party when he should have been keeping a low profile. So he’s jeopardized the season. Why would they elect him a team captain?? They thought Batch would be cut. Leftwich was a short-term substitute. And they have REPEATEDLY demonstrated no confidence in Dixon.
This should not come as a surprise.

Dan, I don’t think the players make the personnel decisions, so maybe you’re the idiot?

Speaking of Jeff Reed … has anyone else noticed how tubby he’s gotten? I’m amazed he can get his leg up to make kicks. Isn’t the kicker required to work out with the rest of the team?

OMG…. Isn’t it just exhausting, folks?
That said, it’s *still* funny to simply type 3 words like “he raped her” just for the sole purpose of watching Deb have to furiously pound out *yet another* 4 or 5 paragraph, point-by-point, long winded explanation about how Ben didn’t rape her, but is still guilty of bad decision making, etc. – as if we didn’t see the last 87 of them she posted.

Heath Miller & James Farrior. More proof the University of Virginia teaches leaders.
As opposed to that other college within the Commonwealth’s boarders.

Just goes to show ya that rapists never win…

    @bunny hop …
Actually, I just copy and paste. Takes seconds.
What’s sad is that you think rape is a funny subject.
What’s funny is that Florio doesn’t post enough on the Browns to keep you occupied. But if he just posted on the Browns, he’d go broke.
