Antoine Winfield worries about cornerback depth against the Saints

With so much focus being placed on quarterback Brett Favre’s rickety ankle, one potentially major problem has been overlooked as the Vikings prepare to visit the Saints to launch the 2010 regular season.

The Vikings have only three healthy cornerbacks.

Given the pass-happy nature of the New Orleans offense, that could be a big problem.  And Pro Bowl corner Antoine Winfield knows it.

Will the Saints try to spread the Vikings’ defense out?  “I’m sure they will,” Winfield said Monday, per Tom Pelissero of 1500espn.com.  “I’m sure they’re reading
the papers, looking on the Internet, reading that we only have three
corners.  So, we can expect that.”

So, should the Vikings bring in more help at the position?  “It would be nice,” Winfield said.  “But that’s not up to me.  The coaches make the decisions.”

Possibilities include, as compiled by Pelissero, Dre’ Bly, Karl Paymah, Jacques Reeves, Travis Fisher, Tye Hill, and Macho Harris.

It’s also possible that Chris Cook (knee) and/or Cedric Griffin (knee) will play.  Cook didn’t practice on Monday; Griffin participated on a limited basis as he continues to come back from a torn ACL suffered in January against the Saints.

Hasn’t been overlooked by me. Their secondary is average at best, and people think they are a superbowl team with no difference makers back there? Saints are going to roll them.

worried??? i think scared is more like it. the Queens weak spot is even weaker….19th in the league last season, giving up 218 yards a game through the air.
Brees gets out the Ginsu…he’s gonna slice and dice that weak sauce secondary.

Every team has its Achilles Heel but it really hurts to have it in the secondary because the NFL has morphed into a pass happy league.
The Vikings shot themselves in the foot when they traded away a NFL ready CB just to get an average WR. With Brees, Brady, Rodgers, Manning, McNabb and Romo on the schedule, I just don’t see this ending all that well. But the CryQueen fans will be ready, they excel at excuse making-just look to the last Saint’s game for all the evidence you will ever need.

The Vikings are just as solid in their secondary as the Saints are in their front 7. Nitwit….

That should be fun to watch. One of the best passing attacks in the NFL against a shoddy secondary with only 3 CB’s?
Get your popcorn ready. At least the Vikings fans now have a pre built-in excuse for losing this week.
Can’t wait to for the Vikings fans to turn a problem on their team into an anti Packer thread….lol. How’s that Sapp trade looking?

  8. whodaywhodat says: Sep 7, 2010 8:31 AM

It doesn’t matter if you have 3 suspect corners or if you had 5 all-pro corners, we are going to spread the D out and pass the ball.
    Saints 41
    Queens 28

  9. clintcooper says: Sep 7, 2010 8:35 AM

lol @ Pervy Harvin. Antoine is simply making excuses upfront if they lose.

  10. Canned Heat says: Sep 7, 2010 9:20 AM

This will obviously put added pressure on the Viking D-line. I questioned getting rid of Cook when they picked up Camarillo, but desperate times call for desperate measures.
As with the QB situation there, if any of these DB’s go down…they are extremely thin there and it will be a thorn in their arse all year. Vikings have a history of playing thin at DB, but playing well through it. We’ll see.

  11. Ridge_Runner says: Sep 7, 2010 9:28 AM

With a depleted secondary against a pass-happy defense, a stop-gap solution to address the loss of their #1 wideout, and a gimpy QB with limited mobility facing a tough pass-rush that feels like it has something to prove, this is going to be like watching a lamb being led to slaughter.
I fully expect when it is over, the Queens will cry conspiracy over Dan Hampton’s insensitive Katrina comment.

    Winfield is just a slappy!
He has only 4 INT’s in the last 3 seasons.
This Winfield slappy would only be nickel or dime back on a good secondary.
The vikings secondary is now worse than 2009
when they 22nd in completions allowed, 25th in completion %, 19th in passing yards allowed, 27th in opponents QB rating.
In a pass happy league Mike Florio just doesn’t see the vikings are far worse this season than last season.

  14. Pervy *Harvin says: Sep 7, 2010 10:12 AM

The Viking D line is going to win the game for the Vikings….remember I said it Aint fans…

Bob Nelson cares what Mike Florio thinks…. awww, ain’t that cute, he wants to be like his dysfunctional daddy. While you post stats about the Vikings secondary, I’ll remind you this gem of a stat from the 2010 NFCCG:
    Passing MIN:310 NO:189
Now WHO has the worse secondary in this matchup?

  16. lebowski says: Sep 7, 2010 10:47 AM

Winfield a slappy??? That is an asinine comment. I would LOVE to have him on the Packers. Then he could teach the rest of our secondary how to tackle.

Really dude? The Saints at least have three playmakers in their front seven with Smith, Vilma, and Ellis. I don’t think the Vikings can say the same.

Chilly’s covering one of the slots in 4 wides this game. He’ll be putting on the eye black for added intimidation and wearing the one bar facemask cause he’s an old school scrapper. Joey Browner is lending him his hockey style elbow pads.

LMAO @ Pervy….Did you copy and paste that statement from your prediction last year? That’s too funny.

  23. CanadianVikingFan says: Sep 7, 2010 12:58 PM

We really could of used a healthy Chris Cook in this game. Oh well, anything can happen in football. So none of your predictions matter.
Oh, and Bob and Jimmy. What the hell happened to your sad excuse of a pass defence with your beloved secondary. Oh and don’t bother brining up Aaron Rodgers because he’d rather play hackey-sac or hand ball than play football, let alone win the important games. You could probably thank Brett for teaching him that aswell.

If a team can contain the Vikings pass rush, the secondary will get torched for quite a few games, especially teams like Saints, Packers, and maybe even the Eagles with thier solid recievers.

read the previous comment, I was responding to the poster’s idea that the viking secondary is as good if not better than the saints front 7.
The viking secondary IS NOT as good as the saints front 7 and to believe so is delusional.

Just have to play more cover three and start Jamarca Sanford for the third safety.

Not relevant. We are talking about team’s secondaries specifically, and in doing so, stats rule. Yes, in the end all that matters is the win, but we’re not talking about the end, we’re talking about the means to the end.
