Last year, Saints quarterback Drew Brees got his teammates worked up on a weekly basis with a chant inspired by a visit to the Marines at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.
This year, when the Saints host the Vikings on Thursday night, Brees plans to lead the entire Superdome in a pregame chant.
“We as a team wanted to find a way to kind of engage our fans prior to
the start of the game with some kind of interaction where we just get
the Dome excited, electric,” Brees said Tuesday.
After the pregame coin toss, Brees will lead the crowd in the “Who Dat!” chant, which goes like this: “Who Dat! Who Dat! Who Dat Say Dey Gonna Beat Dem Saints!”
The chant will be used to launch each home game. Brees will lead it Thursday night, and an honorary captain will do the honors for each of the other seven home games.
“We’ve got the best fans in the world,” Brees said. “We’ve got the loudest fans in the
world. Let’s do something like this so that every opponent that comes in
our stadium knows what’s in store, and it just kind of sets the tone.”
It also sets the stage for a post-game chant from the visiting team and their fans of “We Dat!” at the end of any home game the Saints happen to lose.
