We have Kordell Stewart, and Mike Vick to thank for this failure of an idea. True pocket passers are always going to be the better QB’s and go further in the NFL. Sadly at the college level, these types of QB’s work, so I believe that the NCAA has to take some blame as well.

Wasn’t trying to be harsh. I’m a dreamer but with a big streak of practical. He’s not wanted as a QB in the NFL, which is why he’s without a team. But he has an offer to convert to wideout and keep his dreams alive. I don’t follow baseball, but if he has that fallback, it makes a HUGE difference, of course–assuming he’d prefer to play baseball.

I know the feeling, my insistence of playing wingback has caused my NFL career to go on hold for 45 years now. I wish some team would dial up that telephone gadget, I would consider playing a different position, maybe one of the newer fangled ones.

White is Mike Vick Lite. Think back 6-years and Vick was “about” to redefine the position. It didn’t happen. Even with Vick’s uncanny athleticism, being really short and unable to read defences just doesn’t work in the NFL.
White hasn’t shown anything yet. Unless the Dolphins get a rash of injuries, no one will give him a shot at QB. He doesn’t have the experience to make it another position this year. There is no chance he’ll make it on to a 53-man roster. If he did, it would be at the butt end, where he would need to contribute to special teams.
He’d be better off giving baseball a shot.

That’s a little harsh Deb. Maybe he felt he didn’t need to compromise on his NFL QB dream because he is a little different than most college QB’s who are pushed to change position.
Most of them, you see, weren’t drafted and offered a large signing bonus by the New York Yankees.
So he had that going for him, which is nice.

People keep talking CFL, but even in the CFL, the smaller, running QB seems to be going out of style in favour of more conventional guys with a strong arm and a quick release. Anthony Calvillo of the Montreal Alouettes is the CFL’s best QB right now, and he has all the mobility of a pregnant mongoose.

The problem isn’t the Wildcat or his lack of ability to fit in that system. It DOES have a place in the NFL, and White could easily turn things around. However, it’s much tougher when you are about 5’10 and a buck-seventy. Unless he develops some WR skills, he won’t make it because a guy of that size can’t be relied on to run the football in the NFL.

The classy player got 12 snaps all preseason if that.
He will be picked up eventually because every team needs a player with character that has his running ability. The Steelers and Bengals could use him just for the integrity lift.

In the end, versatility could be White’s best bet for having an NFL career — assuming White still wants one.
his versatility was always his “only” shot of having an NFL career. if you ask me i think the hit he took against the steelers last year was a wake up call for him. tough guy but not NFL tough. Playing in the slot is probably his only chance of getting on the field. can he catch the ball? My bet is he plays baseball.

Great athletes like Pat White have no place in the No Fun League. As long as:
– As long as you have to be 6 foot 5 or above to see over all your big, fat linemen, and have to weigh at least 230 to absorb all the hits from the fact that none of your big, fat linemen are able to move fast enough to pass protect
– As long as all NFL coaches come from one of only 3 or 4 totally stupid coaching trees, that have no idea how to game plan a motion offense the plays don’t diagram nicely onto a chalkboard
NFL coaches and scouts are so myopic, they think there is only one way to run an offense. No one even knows how to run the famous “Notre Dame box” formation of Knute Rockne’s “four horsemen” days, when he won 3-straight national titles. Green Bay used it, and won another 3 NFL titles with it. The playbooks and the knowledge is lost on how to run that system, which required four capable ball handlers – but ancient players were putting up modern offensive numbers in the system. For instance, in 1942, Green Bay’s Cecil Isbell passed for 2,021 yards and 24 TD’s in an 11-game season, and receiver Don Hutson caught 1,211 yards worth of passes for 17 TD’s – in those same 11 games. Those same stats today in a 16 game season would have given Hutson 1,761 yards and 24 TD’s.
However, NFL coaches and scouts have no idea how to handle real NFL talent. Bill Cowher came the closest, in that he was able to employ college qb’s Kordell Stewart, Hines Ward and Randle El in multiple option trick-play formations, and was able to get each one to play multiple positions at a relatively high level of skill.
If you want to know why Pat White can’t find a job in the No Fun League – just look at why Charlie Ward couldn’t stay employed there. NFL coaches and scouting departments have no clue what to do with pure athletic talent. If you don’t fit in one of their tidy little “boxes” as a specialist, you have no chance.

I think he should be patient. As the season goes, quarterbacks are going to be injured and the quarterback depth is thin. A team may bring him in? His agent should remind teams that he is available. Hey, we all remember one Superbowl quarterback that was working in the grocery store before he was called up. It ain’t over till it’s over.
