Two more 2009 fifth-rounders gets the heave-ho

On Sunday, we listed 18 fifth-round picks from 2009 who were no longer on the rosters of the teams who drafted them.

The number has since pushed to 20.

On Monday, the 49ers have cut quarterback Nate Davis (pick No. 171 in the 2009 draft).  On Tuesday, the Chargers cut cornerback Brandon Hughes (pick No. 148).

So the number is up to 20 and growing.

I don’t understand what the big deal is. You’re talking about the fifth round here. I would expect that the dropout rate for the fifth round would be around 50% after a year anyways. Fifth rounders usually populate practice squads.

5th round picks? Really? FIFTH round?

    This is not news.
Making stories for the sake of making stories is kinda cool.
You guys are lucky you don’t have to be accountable, accurate, or even have any honor in what you do.
    I am truly jealous.

    Wow. Tough room.
Start making drinking jokes. The patrons all start laughing more after they’ve had a couple.
Frank The Tank is still with the Steelers, albeit on the practice squad.
Kind of a meh point, considering that the fact he’s on the practice squad meant 31 other teams were like “Meh.”
But at least he’s not been completely discarded.

This would be worthy news if all the fifth rounders from last years get dumped before the season starts…
There is no room for lazy bums on the niners roster, Balmer, Jones, Davis, to name a few !!

Never going to become 32, at least one 5th rounder in 2009 was a good pick. Kevin Huber, a punter.

That sounds about like the yearly average.

5th round are the players who should be projects and need some work. I mean 20 out of 32 picks means 62.5% of the 5th round is no longer on an active roster. That’s pretty bad.

Considering you have anywhere between a quarter to a third of first rounders who end up being busts and eventually traded, cut or otherwise discarded it isn’t surprising that over 50% of the 5th rounders end up at the same NFL destination. Most of the time 5th round picks are being drafted as projects (Quarterbacks and Lineman), special team fillers, camp bodies or practice squad players.
If the team drafting already has a decent squad, then there is a lower probability that a 5th rounder is going to make the roster. The top half of the teams in the NFL are looking to get impact players in the first two rounds and tweaking their roster with the rest of the draft, hoping to strike gold (a la Tom Brady) with some of their 4th/5th/6th and 7th round picks. They certainly aren’t addressing areas of need with the later round picks.
I also think it is important to look at how many of the 5th round picks are still on any roster (practice squad) as these players are often at the fringe NFL talent, therefore they are easily inter-changed with other players that are cut to get down to the 53 man roster. So if I have 2 good TEs and 1 fringe TE drafted in the 5th round filling out my special teams coverage group, but I have 2 good safeties and a third that is pretty bad – when another team with a lot of talent at the safety position makes it’s final cuts and has to let a pretty good/young/5th round pick at safety go – I am going to cut my TE and pick up the safety. Some of these transactions are little more than unofficial multi-team trades.
