Jets crank up trash talking for start of season

The Jets were only getting warm with all the bluster and boasting they did in the offseason.  Comments made to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News shows they are rounding in to regular season form.

Cornerback Antonio Cromartie: “We’re the Miami Heat of football.”

Tight end Dustin Keller: “This team is basically Super Bowl or bust.”

Every time the Jets picked up another big name, quarterback Mark Sanchez got a call about it from G.M. Mike Tannenbaum.

“He’s like, ‘We’re picking up another one,’” Sanchez remembered. “I was like, ‘Geez! What’s going on here?
We’re building a dream team.’”

Mehta suggests that Tannenbaum appeared to have pulled off a series of “smart, calculated moves that appeared too good to be true.”

We’ll see.  Tannenbaum may have made too many moves.  As Nick Saban used to say, this isn’t fantasy football.  The Jets are more exciting than the Patriots and Dolphins, but there’s no huge reason to think they are much better in a competitive division.

“If you doubt me,” coach Rex Ryan said, “I’m going to show you and prove you wrong.”

We don’t think all the bluster really makes a big difference positively or negatively.  The team’s season will depend more on how fast Mark Sanchez can make decisions than what the team says to the media.   Still, we enjoy Ryan making football more fun for his players and those covering him. It’s a game.

“It doesn’t matter to me,” linebacker Bart Scott said. “It’s much more fun to be the villain than the hero.”

This team is so overrated. Defense should be really good but the offense will bring them down. I saw nothing from Sanchize last year that makes me think he’s ready to lead a superbowl team. Maybe in a year or two.

Jet’s Paper Champs, They had to add all those players to even be in contention this year. They were basically a 7-9 team last year who got the playoffs handed to them..

I would have loved to listen to the telephone conversation between Tannebaum and Sanchez.
Tanny: Hey Mark, it’s Mike. You never guess which stud WR.
    Sanchez: Why?
Tanny: Santonio Holmes. He’s going to look damn good when you under throw to him and you get picked off.
Sanchez: Yeah, we would have quite an offense if we only had even an average QB.
Tanny: Yeah, you really suck, but I will never admit that publically since I would look like an idiot for trading up to get you.

I still say the Jets start off 0-3 and don’t get much better than a 6-10 or 8-8 record at best. They will lose against the Ravens, then they have to play New England on just six days rest and the Patriots have already played in that new stadium and scored there (pre-season against the Giants), so I have to give New England the edge. At that point they will be pressing against Miami in week 3 and I just think Miami is a slightly better team.
The Jets shouldn’t have done so much talking, I mean the Ravens are loaded (except for the defensive backfield) and they’ve been quiet all pre-season. So excited for tomorrow night and the season, let’s get it on!!!

This team is a bunch of morons. Yea lets put a target on our back when we have QB that isn’t ready for big time pass rushes and is inexperienced. Sorry Jets but the NFL is a QBs league. The years of a great defense and the likes of Trent Dilfer winning the Super Bowl are over. It is a passing league.

So signed Veterans, suspended players, and one year wonders (Cromartie). Not one player on your team is in the top 5 at their respective position, let alone 3. This is a QB driven league, don’t see you getting by Manning or Brady.

the jets defense will be very good, i mean how can you not be with that defensive line and secondary in that system, pressure and turnovers is the name of the game with nfl defenses and the Jets have both. although i think losing Pace will hurt and Bart Scott is probably the most overrated lb in the league. did anyone see him get blown up big time by a Redskins linemen and then he gets all pissy about it and starts cussing and thrown slaps…lol what a loser. but still the jets defense is gonna be tops in the league.
and that may carry them far but Sanchez is not ready and that offense will not be able to carry the same swag as the defense and drama will occur if Sanchez starts losing them some important games.

  28. Mike Daly says: Sep 8, 2010 11:11 AM

“It’s more fun to be the villain than the hero.” How very John Colicos of you, Bart Scott – the difference is Colicos knew how to make his villains sympathetic and enigmatic; his portrayal of Baltar is among sci-fi’s best characters. And you’re no Baltar, Bart Scott, you’re closer to the weasel Sal Boca (Tony Lo Bianco) from The French Connection – has to look like a tough guy because deep down he knows he’s in over his head.

  29. W.G.PennyPacker says: Sep 8, 2010 11:12 AM

You mean a bunch of people who are basically playing for a championship they won’t get?
Tight end Dustin Keller: “This team is basically Super Bowl or bust.”
    How about bust?
Let’s see some of the names that propelled them to their AFC Championship game. Faneca: gone. Thomas Jones: gone. Pace: out for the season.
Leon Washington: gone. Revis: hasn’t been in camp and who knows what shape he’s in. Sanchez: threw 14? passes in a playoff win, fewest by any Qb in a playoff.
There has been a lot of churn with this team and it doesn’t mean that it is a team, just a bunch of players looking to win the big one. And they still have to beat the Ravens, Colts, and a couple other good teams in order to reach the Super Bowl.

  32. nps6724 says: Sep 8, 2010 11:14 AM

Yeah, Antonio Cromartie and Ladainian Tomlinson both past their prime. OH NOEZ!!!!! You’d think after Cromartie made zero effort to tackle Jets RB Shonn Greene in the playoffs last year that Ryan could tell he wasn’t a quality defender. I guess his name value meant more than his performance.
But Cromartie is right because they definitely are the Miami Heat of football. Only 1 championship in their history, a ton of boasting about upcoming championships, and everyone hates them. Spitting image!

  37. 305phinphan says: Sep 8, 2010 11:20 AM

Sorry Cro but you guys are nothing like the Miami Heat. The Heat have three of the best players in their sport while the Jets pay there players like they are the best they are far from it. With all of those players why did the Jets still manage to go 9-7 last year? That is being mediocre, and the Heat will be a lot more superior than mediocre.

A dream team huh? Tomlinson who struggled to average 3 yards a carry last year. Cromartie who could hardly find a job (the Lions who’s secondary is thin passed on him) and Jason Taylor who at this age can only get a sack when he is coming unblocked at the quarterbacks blindside.
Somebody has to check Sanchez’s papers because there is no way an american citizen is that dumb.

Long time follower of PFT, yet never signed up. This post, well, forced the hand. You NY teams are a joke, how the Giants won a SB a few years ago is beyond me. The pressure thrown upon their respective teams is amazing, but with the Jets they seem to feed of Rexy and add more pressure. These guys are oblivious. The Jets are a Wild Card team at best. They have a QB who is the right-handed version of Leinart and their LB’s are so old (exception D. Harris). What have the Jets done, oh last year. I guess that is enough to declare them SB bound because they added some vets? The 10 kid father Cromartie is about as physical as a dead goldfish. This is good though, at least we know there is one team that will already self destruct, thank you Rexy, I hope T. Jones comes back to haunt you when Greene goes down and LT is running empty, wait Joe McKnight to the rescue. New Yorkers, don’t hate them, rather love to just laugh at them when it comes to their football teams.

The Miami Heat aren’t winning anything either! Very over-rated!
Anyway, as for the Jets, they will be lucky to be .500 this year. Their QB is terrible and they have gotten worse overall on offense. They were a 9-7 team last year that didn’t deserve to be in the Playoffs. Nobody would even be talking about them if the Colts didn’t lay down and hand them the game last season.
The Jets are over-hyped. My Bills will own them this season! Byrd will have another 3 against Crapchez.

Sure they were 9-7, but you’re not mentionong the ass kicking victories on the road at Cinn (who beat everyone in their div twice, including PITT and Balt and at SD (who had the 2nd best record in the AFC.
Sanchez played like a veteran the last 5 games of the year and would have reached the SB if Shonn Greene and Lito Sheppard had not been hurt in the 1st half at Indy. Remember-Jets were leading at the half. Bring it on haters! Jets are back for more damage this year.
hey, that Pat White sure worked out for you mia fans!

how the Giants won a SB a few years ago is beyond me.

quite simple actually. they outscored each team in each game in the playoffs and then the super bowl. it’s an elimination tournament and the giants eliminated all 4 teams they faced.

They are like the Miami Heat, vastly over blown, can’t keep their mouths shut, only one player on the team is as good as his hype, and they probably will leave their fans disappointed. In fact they are exactly like the Miami Heat.

As a Browns fan I could never in my life see myself rooting for the Ravens (ok, maybe against the Steelers) but I think that is all about to change Monday night. If there was ever a team setting themselves up for a crash and burn season more than this one is, I cant remember it.

“I still say the Jets start off 0-3 and don’t get much better than a 6-10 or 8-8 record at best. They will lose against the Ravens, then they have to play New England on just six days rest and the Patriots have already played in that new stadium and scored there (pre-season against the Giants), so I have to give New England the edge.”
You must be stoned to make such a ridiculous comment. You’re telling us that the Patriots have the edge because they scored a couple times against the Giants in the 4th game of the preseason with and against guys that are no longer wearing a NFL uniform?
Just keep on hating folks. No, the offense isn’t a great offense, but the defense is pretty damn close to great. As long as they control the football on offense they will have a pretty damn good team.

    ******************************************
themage78 is a moron…Faneca was the weak link on the O-Line, take a look at the stats kept for Offensive Lineman. He gave up the most sack on the line last year. Pace is only out for a bout 4 weeks, so get your facts straight, clown. Leon Washington bronke his leg at mid-season and had nothing to do with them making the playoffs, or the wins. And, why would I care how many passes my qb threw ina playoff WIN…the point is we won. It’s not about 1 player, but about the team…Marino was argueably the best QB in the league throughout his career and never won. I’d rather have Ryan Leaf as a QB and win the Super Bowl, than Joe Montana and win none…

  139. JMC296 says: Sep 9, 2010 12:09 PM

I have ‘em going 10-6 this season, making the playoffs. Just getting there is the most important thing. Once you’re there, who knows? Even the Browns strung a few wins together last year. That said, this whole charade gets more tired with every story. It was ridiculous how they welcomed Revis back on Hardknocks last night like he was just freed after being held captive for the last month and change when in reality he put himself in front of the team. That plus Sanchez displaying his future talents as an assistant to an offensive coordinator at some college and little else does little to make all the hype more legitimate. 10-6 like I said, but no SB this year. I’ve been wrong before, though.

  140. Mike Daly says: Sep 9, 2010 6:17 PM

10-6 is an absurd prediction for the Jets – there isn’t a decent offense they can actually stop and the offense does not have any firepower. The run is outdated as an effective weapon and Sanchez has regressed in front of our eyes.
