Chris Johnson says he's the best back in the league

On Wednesday, Vikings running back Adrian Peterson told Dan Patrick that Peterson is a better running back than Titans tailback Chris Johnson.

On Thursday, the ever-talkative Johnson responded.

Asked how he compares himself to Peterson, Johnson said, per Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean, “I don’t.  I am the best back in the league, he is not. I don’t think it
is close.  I feel like I am above all the other running
backs in the league.  I feel like I am above him.”

For now, Johnson is right.

But they both had better watch out for Ray Rice.

AP needs to hold onto the ball and STF UP. look at the greats, barry, brown, they had less fumbles in their careers than AP does in a season.

Stephen Jackson is the best running back in the game.
Have him switch teams with AP or CJ and its not even close. Jackson plays on 1 of the worst teams of all time and still puts up monster numbers while CJ and AP play with great players especially on the offensive line.

In your mind you’re prolly right CJ, but I think at least 30 of the 32 teams in the league would say it’s Peterson who has did it every year. Last year the Titans had nothing else to play for except to get you yards……no goal of winning games or getting to the playoffs becuz of their 0-7 start. Also, CJ had games of 35 + carries becuz the sole goal was to get him yards to break 2000. If the Titans have any aspirations of a winning season and making the playoffs this year, they will have to exclude the selfish attitude of CJ and that it’s all about HIM and his YARDS. Doesn’t sound to me like CJ is much of a team player, and combined with his “threatened holdout for more money” this past spring……it’s all about ME CJ and the hell with the team.

  32. Wizahdry says: Sep 9, 2010 5:10 PM

Chris Johnson is the best right now. Peterson will need to cure the fumblitis before he can claim to be best. Ray Rice needs to be an every down back and not be splitting carries so much to move up the ladder.

  33. BDiddy says: Sep 9, 2010 5:12 PM

Chris Johnson is the best RB in the league, period. He had 600 more rushing yards last year than the 2nd place back, Steven Jackson. In other words, he could have sat his ass on the bench for the last 4 weeks of the season and he still would have been the leading rusher in the NFL. And before you mention how bad Jackson’s team is, remember that Johnson’s Titans started 0-6. Once they started consistently giving CJ 20-30 carries a game, they finished 8-2 in their last ten. He also plays on a team with no passing attack and faces 8 in the box every week.

Jackson sure as hell would be in the conversation if he played in New York or played for a winning team.
As it is east coast fans like me hardly ever see him play or hear much about him.

  35. Ram Tough says: Sep 9, 2010 5:13 PM

Steven Jackson is the best running back in football. The man literally BROKE HIS BACK carrying the Rams last season. As a fan of the team, I can’t imagine how hard it has to be for someone like Jackson to play as hard as he does every week when the team is finishing with 1, 2, or 3 wins every year. If Jackson was allowed to run behind the Titans line, this wouldn’t even be up for debate. I like Johnson alot but he’s going to fall into that T.O. role of ‘guy runs his mouth too much.’

  36. mattybobbins says: Sep 9, 2010 5:15 PM

It’s a lot easier to get those numbers when you have no other viable offensive options on your team. With Vince Young and “insert WR name here” as your other skill position players, I’d hand or throw the ball to Johnson every play, he should put up huge numbers just on opportunity alone. AP has a hall of fame QB, the reigning offensive ROY, a pro-bowl WR in Rice and a borderline pro-bowl TE in Shiancoe, yet he still put up 1,300+ yds rushing, led the league in rushing TDs (18) and had a career high in catches (42).
This year will be the telling year, Sid-Rice out, Favre hobbled and rusty…this will be the year of AP and Chris Johnson will have to deal with being #2 in the league, sorry my boy, it’s the truth.

  37. TheDPR says: Sep 9, 2010 5:15 PM

Deangelo Williams is better all-around than either of them. He isn’t faster than Johnson or stronger than Peterson but he’s a better balance than either of them and can catch the ball.

  39. jebdamone says: Sep 9, 2010 5:16 PM

this is another example of the media taking comments completely out of context in order to entice drama. Adrian never said he was the best back in the league, he said that was the mentality that he had in order to make sure that he was the best he could be. he even mentions that he told CJ at one point that he should have the same mentality…that you have to believe in yourself.
yet another reason that a can’t stand this ahole and almost passed on him even at #3 in my fantasy league. yes CJ, you are a great RB and quite possibly even the best in the league, but have a little humility for once and quick talking smack for three seconds…that might gain you something that you AD surely has…respect.

AP’s #’s go down every year, he fumbles ALL DAY, and he should be the consensus #2 back in the league.
CJ, in his rookie season, split carries with LenDale White and still broke 1200 yards.
Then, when he receives the majority of the carries, he breaks 2000?
    I think it’s safe to say he’s legitimately #1.

Since every media member is a yard horny, stat slut in the Fantasy Football whore house, let’s get some facts straight.
Since we can’t use career stats to measure the two because of AP’s one year on seniority, we’ll have to average their first two years in the league.
Unless my druken math is way off, their two year careers are pretty much identical.
Wait, we have to include each season’s stats to be fair.
Wait, that’s not fair either. What about the guys with more than three years.
Well, I guess LT blows both of them out of the water.
Starting to sound pretty stupid isn’t it.
Wait until they’re both retired and playing the back 9 at Augusta.
Then we can get down to business, squating in our dingy one room apartments, squinting at our lap tops, researching stats, arguing who was the better RB.
Wait, now I’m not so excited about the future.

he needs to say he is the best back in the league. would you want him saying, “I think I am ok. I might do well here”? NO! You want him to be cocky and KNOW he is good.
    _________________________________
No we wouldn’t want him to only think he is ok, he’s a great player. But there is a fine line between cocky and confident and he’s way too cocky. NO it’s not ok to be cocky to the media because then it just looks like you’re a jackass (which is looks like he is). Be cocky to yourself thinking you’re the best RB in the league.
Don’t you every wonder why when he gets interviewed after his big games, he never says anything about help from O-line. He never says “Oh, we’ll I couldn’t of done it without my O-line and coaching staff,” but rather says “follow me on twitter, my name is CJohnson28.” That’s when your O-line decides to give the defense some open lanes to hit you hard because you never give them any credit.
And I think Peterson is a better back. He’s more powerful, his O-line isn’t as good as everyone says too. I am a Vikings fan, I would know. But AP is the #1 back in the league who gets stuffed behind the line. I would call that a poor O-line or poor blocking scheme or poor play-calling.

I think that AP will have a far more impressive career when it is all said and done, especially if he can cure the fumble problem. Just my opinion. His combination of speed and strength is unreal. CJ had a great year, no doubt. I just think that things are going to be a little bit different now that defenses have spent the offseason watching tape and scheming even more carefully to stop him. Last year the Titans didn’t have much else to play for, and I’m not sure that was a small factor in his success, either. Wish I had either back on my team…but I would take AP first.

As for all of you saying that CJ can’t be the best back because he hasn’t done it year in and year out like adrian, what has adrian exactly done year in and year out for so long? if i’m not mistaken he was only drafted one year before CJ, so he can’t have been doing it for too long. adrian’s running style also isn’t conducive to a long running back life expectancy so for those of you who say that he will end up with better numbers, i’m not so sure its clear. i think he will have 2 more good seasons or so and then quickly decline, whereas CJ, as long as he doesnt have some cheap shot at his knees, can last. even if he “loses a step”, he’s still going to be as fast as anyone on the field. and he doesn’t have the punishing running style that a guy like adrian peterson or brandon jacobs or even steven jackson have. the end.

The Ravens love across the board in media land is baffling. So they added Boldin.. big freaking whoop.. their secondary won’t stop a butterfly…

  85. midwest says: Sep 9, 2010 7:27 PM

MJD is the best back in the league. He is the best receiver and blocker of the bunch.

  86. The Hogster says: Sep 9, 2010 7:28 PM

The best back will be the one who can succeed consistently. One season does not make a good back THE BEST.
If they both continue at their current level, then CJ is the best. But, that remains to be seen.
It’s hard to compare running backs who have such different games anyway. Nobody can realistically compare Barry Sanders to Jim Brown.

The quote is obviously an edit. it was actually:
“I don’t. I be da bess an he no it. It aint even close. Chris Johnson be above everybody. He aint get 2K, dat wuz ME. I da man, now pay me”
    ———————————————
Hilarious!!!! ..and probably the truth as well. If it wasn’t for football, CJ wouldn’t even qualify for a job running the fry bin at McDonald’s.
@ BornSlippy: Most Raider fans aren’t making those kind of claims, so don’t lump us all together. Raidersteve413 knows better as well. He’s just having a little fun, so lighten up, man.

  88. steelcarrot says: Sep 9, 2010 7:36 PM

    A) Rice is not even in the same league as those 2.
    B) Johnson is a scat back who capatalized on some questionable run defenses last year AP is superior.

  89. Bell63 says: Sep 9, 2010 7:36 PM

As long as he is the best back in my fantasy league, I’ll be happy.

  90. Djaehne says: Sep 9, 2010 7:36 PM

CJ has the tats and gold teeth to prove he’s the best.

  91. danielsanchez06 says: Sep 9, 2010 7:53 PM

The Raiders. Oh god, the Raiders. If only the offseason lasted forever… Then it would be so great to be a Raiders fan. Once the season starts, everything will be back to normal. Friggin’ losers.

When you’re really the best, you don’t have to say so yourself.

  93. Chapnasty. says: Sep 9, 2010 8:10 PM

Florio you are right, Ray Rice is #3 and with one good season, like Chris Johnson, he will be above them for his ability to catch and run with the football. Something neither Peterson or CJ are that good at. I guess these commenters know so much about the game!

Millions of fantasy football players disagree. He’s definitely top 5, in most circles, he’s either #3 or #4
    ————
I do think Rice is a top-5 back — please don’t compare fantasy to, you know, real life. Fantasy leagues are full of things like PPR that distort the value of certain players, Rice among them.
    —————
If you think you can dismiss Ray Rice as just a fantasy back, you didn’t watch any of the Raven games last year. Otherwise you would have seen a back who put the team on his shoulders and willed them to a win in quite a few games. The guy was a difference maker.

  95. BDiddy says: Sep 9, 2010 8:11 PM

People, CJ played for a mediocre team and yet he outrushed both Steven Jackson and Adrian Peterson by 600 yards last season. 600 yards! He also caught 50 passes for 500 yards. He set the record for the most yards from scrimmage EVER on a team with no passing attack and started out 0-6. Jackson and Peterson are both great backs, don’t get me wrong. But until one of them (or someone else) outproduces CJ, CJ is the best. No questions, no ifs, ands, or buts.

    CJ Spiller!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  97. yonk49 says: Sep 9, 2010 8:24 PM

I love how no one ever talks about Gore… He had statistically the worst run blocking team in the league last year and still put up 17.7 FF points per week…
    CJ: 21.4
    AP:17.4
    Gore:17.7 (had 1 carry in 3 games)
    MJD:16.9
    Rice:15.4
I’m just saying, don’t be surprised when Gore or Rice end up in the top two this season… I would rank them: AP,Gore, Rice, CJ, MJD… Gores has a real easy schedule this year with an improved line, CJ’s schedule has gotten harder and there is no way he gets over 1500 yards rushing this season, Rice got all of his TD’s stolen in the 1st 4 weeks last season.

What do Jim Brown, Walter Payton, Eric Dickerson, Tony Dorsett, Franco Harris and OJ Simpson have in common? They all averaged more fumbles per game during their entire career than AD has during his first 3 seasons (when running backs fumble the most). Even the legends have weaknesses. The media is just so far up their own asses looking for stories nowadays that they need to focus on stuff like this.

If Williams or Stewart were feature backs on different teams, I would put them in their category.

    I agree %100.
    Best backs in the league
    1)Ap
    2)Steven Jackson
    3)MJD
    4)CJ
    5)Williams

All these ray rice haters need to stop drinking so much haterade. Bottom line: next to CJ2k, ray did the most per touch of any back last year and had the most yards from scrimmage. I’m not saying he’s the best–you geniuses have already determined he’s not–but 2,000 yards from scrimmage last year was one of the most productive seasons by a back in nfl history.

  102. Jungle Juice says: Sep 9, 2010 10:45 PM

Uhhh Cedric Benson anyone? Missed almost 5 games last year and still had over 1200 yards. Not as flashy but he hammers people and did it without a passing threat and had a thrown-together O-Line. He will get 1600+ yards this year.

  103. Sweetness34 says: Sep 10, 2010 8:44 AM

I have to agree with the people who mentioned Deangelo Williams. The guy is very underrated.
Ray Rice is good but still has a lot to prove.

Wow u guys are hating on ray rice like it was a quote from his mouth that they better watch out for him and it’s funny hearing all these fantasy guys ride his nuts I remember last year I picke him in the 2nd round on a straight homer pick and idiots like u lit me up for taking him so high bet he goes in the 1st in more then half the leagues this year

  105. 281bryce says: Sep 10, 2010 7:32 PM

ap is not better than cj and ray is not not close to best in the league.

Johnson is the best back in the league. He wont get 2,500 yards though.
