I have to agree with the people who mentioned Deangelo Williams. The guy is very underrated.
Ray Rice is good but still has a lot to prove.

Uhhh Cedric Benson anyone? Missed almost 5 games last year and still had over 1200 yards. Not as flashy but he hammers people and did it without a passing threat and had a thrown-together O-Line. He will get 1600+ yards this year.

All these ray rice haters need to stop drinking so much haterade. Bottom line: next to CJ2k, ray did the most per touch of any back last year and had the most yards from scrimmage. I’m not saying he’s the best–you geniuses have already determined he’s not–but 2,000 yards from scrimmage last year was one of the most productive seasons by a back in nfl history.

What do Jim Brown, Walter Payton, Eric Dickerson, Tony Dorsett, Franco Harris and OJ Simpson have in common? They all averaged more fumbles per game during their entire career than AD has during his first 3 seasons (when running backs fumble the most). Even the legends have weaknesses. The media is just so far up their own asses looking for stories nowadays that they need to focus on stuff like this.

I love how no one ever talks about Gore… He had statistically the worst run blocking team in the league last year and still put up 17.7 FF points per week…
CJ: 21.4
AP:17.4
Gore:17.7 (had 1 carry in 3 games)
MJD:16.9
Rice:15.4
I’m just saying, don’t be surprised when Gore or Rice end up in the top two this season… I would rank them: AP,Gore, Rice, CJ, MJD… Gores has a real easy schedule this year with an improved line, CJ’s schedule has gotten harder and there is no way he gets over 1500 yards rushing this season, Rice got all of his TD’s stolen in the 1st 4 weeks last season.

People, CJ played for a mediocre team and yet he outrushed both Steven Jackson and Adrian Peterson by 600 yards last season. 600 yards! He also caught 50 passes for 500 yards. He set the record for the most yards from scrimmage EVER on a team with no passing attack and started out 0-6. Jackson and Peterson are both great backs, don’t get me wrong. But until one of them (or someone else) outproduces CJ, CJ is the best. No questions, no ifs, ands, or buts.

If you think you can dismiss Ray Rice as just a fantasy back, you didn’t watch any of the Raven games last year. Otherwise you would have seen a back who put the team on his shoulders and willed them to a win in quite a few games. The guy was a difference maker.

Florio you are right, Ray Rice is #3 and with one good season, like Chris Johnson, he will be above them for his ability to catch and run with the football. Something neither Peterson or CJ are that good at. I guess these commenters know so much about the game!

A) Rice is not even in the same league as those 2.

The best back will be the one who can succeed consistently. One season does not make a good back THE BEST.
If they both continue at their current level, then CJ is the best. But, that remains to be seen.
It’s hard to compare running backs who have such different games anyway. Nobody can realistically compare Barry Sanders to Jim Brown.

As for all of you saying that CJ can’t be the best back because he hasn’t done it year in and year out like adrian, what has adrian exactly done year in and year out for so long? if i’m not mistaken he was only drafted one year before CJ, so he can’t have been doing it for too long. adrian’s running style also isn’t conducive to a long running back life expectancy so for those of you who say that he will end up with better numbers, i’m not so sure its clear. i think he will have 2 more good seasons or so and then quickly decline, whereas CJ, as long as he doesnt have some cheap shot at his knees, can last. even if he “loses a step”, he’s still going to be as fast as anyone on the field. and he doesn’t have the punishing running style that a guy like adrian peterson or brandon jacobs or even steven jackson have. the end.
