Dolphins admit costly mistake in Jake Grove

In one of Dolphins G.M. Jeff Ireland’s first days as the official boss in Miami, he admitted one of his and Bill Parcells’ biggest mistakes.

Miami cut center Jake Grove on Thursday, just one year after the signed him to a five-year, $29.5 million contract with $14 million guaranteed.  It goes down as one of the worst signings by any team in the last few years.

The Dolphins have really struggled to settle their interior offensive line throughout the Ireland/Parcells era, especially at center.   The team signed another former Cowboy Cory Procter to take his place.   Joe Berger is the team’s starter.

It would make sense if the Raiders were interested in bringing Grove back into the mix.

Cory Proctor was on the Dolphins and just recently cut. They brought him back, but thanks for that info.

JSpicoli I agree with you completely.
My question is why would the Raiders be interested? Didn’t they draft a big man that is now their starting center? Also didn’t they let Grove go to begin with?

its not just the raiders or fins that makes mistakes like this all teams do every year.. i dont see how they have all these people with all the credentials and they still make financial blunders like this…. tighten up NFL

  6. rbais2 says: Sep 9, 2010 12:29 PM

Now, I know why Parcells left. He knew this team would lose and so this season would not stain his resume.
Kevin Mawae would be a good pickup, but they might is too thin to play against nose tackles.

your right. the raiders being an awful franchise is all a creation of the media. deangelo hall and gibril wilson were having fine seasons before they were let go mid way through their first season. jamarcus russell and darren mcfadden, great picks. i could continue with the list of terrible decisions that team has made over the last decade, but you would just blame florio or the “slanted press” for me realizing oakland is a second rate franchise that would struggle to compete in the ufl.

Jake is a baller but he’s too small to take on big NT’s.
I think the Raiders will pick him up and make him a guard.

  20. AbeFreshly says: Sep 9, 2010 12:38 PM

As a Raider fan since the 70s, I have NEVER seen a Raider C flying backwards with his arms & legs flailing wildly as he landed at his QB’s feet…until Jake Grove was drafted. He was the Rimington Award winner the same year that Robert Gallery was the Outland trophy winner. The 2 best NCAA OL, & Al Davis drafted them BOTH in ’04.
IMO, that is where everything started going sideways for the Raiders. For some reason, neither of them worked out as planned. 2 years later, the Jets do the same thing & draft D’Brickashaw Ferguson & Nick Mangold, & both have been to the Pro Bowl as the Jets have ‘coincidentally’ become a contender.
Jake Grove was one of the strongest & most athletic NCAA OL prospects in the ’04 draft. Definitley the #1 C prospect by far. He wasn’t a Lightweight at all. I was overjoyed that Al picked Grove & Gallery.
I guess you just never know…

Possibly Rosenthal makes a point for the first time in his life.
Yes the Raiders would be interested in bringing back Grove for two reasons.
1.) They are very thin at center (Hence the starting of Jared Veldeer)
2.) Al Davis is always willing to bring back players that have left via free agency( See: Langston Walker…!)

If they start losing, Mr. Ross will send out the secret code to the ownership investors to get out the keys for detonation of the season; all who make decisions are on the block.
The Biggest Party in South Florida will be at American Airlines Arena come the Dolphins first home game in Nov. after the “big 3″ have started their title run if the Dolphins start 1 -7. You might as well rename it each week after the visiting team( Titan Life Stadium, Chicago Life Stadium, etc.) The Aqua and Orange will quickly become Red and Black while Stub Hub is flooded with season ticket holders trying to jack up their unwanted tickets to visiting fans from the pathetic cities they have remaining on the schedule attempting to get out of the cold.
Dolphins could very easily be 1 -7 :
Dolphins have to beat Bills this Sunday.
Will all the distractions as of late get the best of them?
    Vikings- Loss
    Jets- Loss
    Patriots – Loss
(might be able to pull this one out, cause Pats are on the verge of their own problems between players, coaches, front office)
    Green Bay- Loss
    Pittsburgh – Loss
    Cincy -Loss
    Baltimore- Loss

Grove was a free agent, the Raiders did not “get rid of him”. The Dolphins signed him then traded Satele to Oakland becasue he is soft. The Raiders will be improved this season, but still in the bottom third of the league. The Dolphins will finish in the top third of the leage and challenge for the division title.

If the Dolphins found a better player at center than Grove (Joe Berger), how come this is a mistake and not an ccomplishment that they found a player who is better for half the price?
The mistake would be keeping some of these bad players.

  44. Terrell Blowens says: Sep 9, 2010 1:52 PM

    @chinoo411
Hall was straight garbage for the Raiders. He would leave a 5-10 yard cushion for WRs at the line of scrimmage so all a team needed to do was run a slant and throw it his way. And with Nnamdi shutting down the other WR, opposing QBs only thew at Hall. He’s a gambler and he totally failed in the Raiders’ system because he would rather go for the pick than focus on actually covering a receiver

  45. texasPHINSfan says: Sep 9, 2010 2:02 PM

Grove was going to get paid $6M this year and he had lost the starting battle at center. Why would you pay your backup $6M/year?
The mistake was all the $$ they paid him in the first place, and it was definitely a mistake.
I haven’t been super-impressed by Parcells in his tenure here thus far. 2008 was impressive, but that was mostly Chad Pennington, not much else.

Bring him back to the Raiders?, are you crazy, if they wanted him they would have made him a good offer back when they let him go.
They trade Burgess for a 3 and make him no offer, 1 year with mediocre 5 sacks in New England and cut. No offer to Jerry Porter, Jags sign big contract with 1 and done.
And now Groves, Groves always had trouble with playing large NT’s in 3-4, is hurt a bunch and misses games in bunches.
The Raiders have not only got young at center they have got much, much bigger.

Well chinoo, let me help you out since you seem to have failed reading comprehension in grade school. You see, Spicoli is merely claiming that he is surprised that someone in the media is pointing out that a team OTHER than the Raiders made a mistake. He was not saying the Raiders haven’t made their share of mistakes in the last 7 years. Only that others also make mistakes too, but you don’t hear about it as much.
Pointing out the other errors in you statement would obviously be waste of time.

  58. kcrockett1 says: Sep 9, 2010 4:12 PM

    Couple of things:
    1. The raiders did not “let him go,” his contract expired and he signed a free agent deal with the Dolphins.
    2. This means that there was no “grove for satele” trade.
    3. I don’t care who you are a fan of, if your team, owner, gm, whoever has never made a single signing mistake, go ahead and speak. However, I think we could go all day going team-by-team.
    4. The real mistake would be hanging on to him like so many other franchises do with players that they have overpaid for.
    and
    5. Florio is a He-She.

  59. Pr1cetag says: Sep 9, 2010 4:17 PM

    NachoBidness,
It’s the ignorant Raiders fans sitting here trying to bash the Dolphins for no reason at all. You are right, all of you doubting how solid Jake Grove was, please go check football outsiders stats. He was one of the better centers in the league and was with the Raiders the last 2 seasons he was there.
    Ron,
Every team cycles players and if they are a good team and they don’t work they cut them. The Patriots have done the exact same thing with players such as Adalius Thomas. The Jets have done the same thing and have let go of good players such as Thomas Jones. So if you really knew football the way you portray you would realize this is part of the business. You don’t realize if a guy will perform up to his capabilities or exactly fits your offense or defense until you try.
    sndvl99,
you my friend are clueless, Dansby has averaged 108 tackles, three sacks, six passes defended, two interceptions and two forced fumbles. So please don’t be as ignorant as to just look at one seasons stats.

  60. thejetsman says: Sep 9, 2010 4:20 PM

That’s funny I could swear I heard florio and all these meathead fin fans say they have a better line because the jets cut faneca who is now getting pancaked in arizona once a game. But now they have 2 new starters with incognito (another standup guy *aka “criminal” for miami) and now this center, I don’t know what happened with your line last year ( cuz I don’t care cuz your irrelevant) but that sounds like a lot more uncertanty than the jets to me, slauson was coached by our line coach in collage clearly he knows what he’s getting. Dolphins blow ronnie won’t be the same after surgery and your line won’t hold up ill say 7-9 OVERRATED!!!

  61. OhioPhins says: Sep 9, 2010 4:24 PM

Yes, the Dolphins paid a lot for Jake Grove. He filled a need and was one of the highest rated centers in the league at that time. However, this is an uncapped year. Joe Berger, a 2005 6th round pick, is playing better. Why keep Grove around?
With that said, I wish Miami would have traded him instead of cutting him loose. ehh… it’s just Stephen Ross’ money. Good for Jake!

  62. william sizemore says: Sep 9, 2010 4:25 PM

Seems like the good news is for players to come to Miami, get cut, get rich and retire to South Beach and tell the tourist about how great you were, you got to love the NFL, some teams just keep helping the economy moving. Bill

  63. oraclepz says: Sep 9, 2010 6:43 PM

I swear some people are dumb… a team that went 1-15 two years ago has compiled a record of 20-12 in the next two season and the regime is being questioned? Lol yeah really smart.. these guys don’t play favoritism..either you perform or you get cut, plain and simple. They don’t care the round you got drafted, how much your making. You tell me a crappy team that wouldn’t take that record. The lions rams bucs would take it and run with it..People talk about the mistakes but what franchise doesn’t have them? How about counting what they have done right also. Bess, hartline, long, Davis, langford, polite, then the jury is still out on henne, smith, clemons, misi, wake, jerry, this year is a critical year for a lot of new starters.
All people can think about is grove getting cut. Grove was a pretty good center but is injury prone. Berger held it down in his absence. So if berger can do the same thing for cheaper and not be injury prone, that’s a bad thing? Get real.. were headed the right direction

  64. tango says: Sep 9, 2010 8:16 PM

I think Joe Toronto is right. Raiders sign Grove and move him over as a back-up guard. A slight improvement over most on that O line but even a slight upgrade is good

  65. comment_submission_error says: Sep 9, 2010 9:04 PM

Where’s that Dolphin fan that told me Grove was staying, even if he wasn’t starting? Grove had his moments in Oakland, but couldn’t push his man off the ball consistently, and always got hurt trying. If he ends up back in Oakland I just might cry a little.
