Steve Smith sorry for "shallow, ignorant, immature" comments

Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith said during training camp that he’s going after Giants safety Michael Johnson, who injured Smith in Week Sixteen last year.

Now Smith says he’s sorry for that.

“What I said in the summer was shallow, ignorant, immature and really no need,” Smith said. “I don’t need to be that way and I’m not going to be that way to my opponents anymore.”

Smith did fall back on the frequent athlete excuse of saying his comments were “kind of taken out of context,” but he seems to admit that he crossed the line by suggesting that he would seek revenge on the field.

Smith and Johnson will cross paths again on Sunday when the Panthers visit the Giants.

This guy will never get it. What an idiot.

Well, for once an athlete takes responsibility for what he said instead of apologizing if anyone was offended.

Good luck getting revenge on a guy that probably wont see the field. Why don’t you try to take revenge on Antrelle Rolle and Kenny Phillips?
Oh that’s right – because they’ll snap your 4 foot ass in half.
    GOOD LUCK!
Will the real (Superbowl Champion) Steve Smith please stand up?!

    I don’t think they do.

most nfl fans have a distorted view of Smith. Ever since the Lucas punch the dude has changed a lot. But for anyone that doesn’t follow the Panthers, how would you know?

  8. Zaggs says: Sep 9, 2010 8:48 AM

I doubt Johnson and little smith will cross paths. The starting safeties for the Giants are Antrelle Rolle and Superman (aka Kenny Phillips).
Oh yeah how did that whole “career threatening injury” thing work for Phillips?

he’s rude obnoxious and self indulgent. Its a wrap for him. His career is over.

Good for him. Some people just grow up later than others. It refreshing to hear someone say something like this. I think he has kids and it sets a better example than his previous message.

    Johnson -1
    Smith – 0?????
Johnson hits Smith, breaks his arm and Smitty walks into the endzone. Panthers blow out the G-Men. Not sure Smith lost that one.

You Giants homers are crazy. Don’t rip our guy up because he torches you every time we play. There is no comparison between the real Steve Smith and your guy. None. Any of you would do backflips if SS somehow ended up on your team. He has burnt you every time he’s played the giants, and he will again on Sunday. Smitty said he was going light the dude up for breaking his arm. Big deal. Then he apologized for it. Your best receiver shot himself in the foot and your running back is a delusional crybaby. Good luck Eli, the Panthers are going to freight train yall, AGAIN! Write it down

We all know this game is about Jonathan Stewart anyway. How’d that work out for you last time?

    @ poorboysrev-
    actually it was his thigh.
Your Steve Smith had 65 cathces for 980yds and 7 tds, broke his own teamates jaw, hurt himself playing FLAG FOOTBALL, and is on the downswing of his career.
Ou Steve Smith had 107 catches for 1200 yds with 7 tds, won a superbowl, and is a budding superstar coming into his prime.
Yeah, I Think I’ll take our Steve Smith 10 times out of 10

  24. poorboysrev says: Sep 9, 2010 11:52 AM

SO you’re really going to blame Steve Smith for having a down year last year when we had the worst quarterback play a team could have. When Jake got pulled what happened? He helped us put up 41 on you Yash. The Panthers ripped out your teams heart and showed it to you when we were playing for nothing and the Giants had everything to gain. That would be like saying Larry Fitzgerald sucks now if Arizona struggles and his numbers drop now that they have DA instead of Warner. Your smith had 1 good season, big deal. Talk to me when he’s been to 4 probowls. Nobody’s gameplanning to stop big blue’s steve. He scares no one. Our guy is double and triple teamed every week. Your steve: competent yes, very. Gamebreaker NO CHANCE! He would be our number 2 and he’d be the giants number 2 if Smitty went there. No doubt. We’re about to put 250+ rushing yards on you and Smitty’s catching a touchdown. We might go 6-10 for the year but we are taking you to the woodshed this Sunday WOOO!!!!!!!!

  25. Nacho Libre says: Sep 9, 2010 12:03 PM

Anyone who wants the NY Giants impostor Steve Smith can have him. The real Steve Smith did all that with a QB that was throwing to the wrong team with a gimp arm, and then an undrafted QB coming off the bench and he still mauled the Giants last year. I’ll take #89 any day, and anyone who says otherwise is just a homer who can’t see straight. That 1200 yards and TDs really did ya alot of good getting you into the playoffs didn’t it? Oh wait, you disappeared when the Panthers came into your house in your LAST game EVER in that stadium, tore the place down and put a hurtin’ on you when the playoffs were on the line. Admit it, your beloved G-men laid down and died. Steve Smith broke his arm and yet he still waltzed into the endzone, holding onto the ball WITH the broken arm. Yeah, good hit, can’t even jar the ball loose with your helmet on a crippled arm. Now you’re riding the bench. Yeah, looks like Johnson really won that showdown didn’t he?

  26. CKL says: Sep 9, 2010 12:57 PM

LOL…SS has not changed much if at all. Same guy. Hot and cold personality. The fact he was voted a captain and not your QB would worry me more. I like MM a lot, but that isn’t a good sign. There will be leadership problems with this team this year. I said it before on other posts on here and I’ll say it again.

Good player, but he’s always been ignorant when dealing with other people on/off the field.
Threw a playbook at a guy’s head a few years back – IGNORANT!
