Mike Shanahan explains to Chris Cooley what not to say to the media

Reporters at Redskins practice aren’t allowed the pass along whether a player is with the starting unit, the second team, or the scout team. No such formal restrictions exist for players.

According to the Washington Post, Chris Cooley said during a radio appearance on Friday morning that Albert Haynesworth has spent the majority of his time with the scout team this week. That would indicate Haynesworth’s role in Sunday’s game may be minor.

Mike Shanahan says that’s not necessarily the case, and spent part of Friday doing damage control after Cooley’s comments. The Mastermind said that everyone helps on the scout team, including first-teamers and second teamers.

Asked if it was odd that Haynesworth spent most of his time there, Shanahan said, “It’s unusual for Chris to tell people who’s working with the scout team. I’ve already talked to Chris.”

Cooley said his intent was to show that Haynesworth has put forth great effort.

“I think he’s done a great job all week,” Cooley said.
