Ravens say "Hard Knocks" helped them prepare for Jets

The Baltimore Ravens didn’t just watch game tape to help them prepare for their Week One game against the New York Jets. They also watched HBO.

Ravens offensive coordinator Cam Cameron says that by watching Hard Knocks: Training Camp With the New York Jets, he learned some information he wouldn’t otherwise know about the Jets’ defense, information he can apply to the game plan he’s preparing for their game on Monday night.

“Yeah, there was probably a lot revealed in that strategically, the way I viewed it,” Cameron said. “At least what we were jotting down. There was a lot of stuff in there strategically.”

The Jets have embraced their role on Hard Knocks and said they love showing off what they do to the rest of the league. But some coaches have said they would never allow cameras inside their locker rooms, team meetings and practice sessions.

The Ravens apparently fall into the latter camp, and they think that by seeing what the Jets were doing in training camp they have a better chance of beating the Jets in the regular season.

Can an hour a week of reality TV really give the Ravens a leg up? We’ll find out on Monday night.

Bengals were on Hard Knocks last year. The Ravens played them twice. They got beat both times. Once again the Ravens yapping doesn’t match reality

Cam you should have waited until after the game to reveal this.

I don’t think anything valuable was shown. Cameron need to STFU and get ready for this mauling Flacco going to get in 2 days!!!

This coming from the same guy that said, “We need your thumbs to go this way.”
Don’t get me wrong, I’m rooting for the Jets to lose, but Cam Cam is a dumb dumb.

  6. promin1 says: Sep 11, 2010 8:29 AM

I highly doubt the Ravens learned anything on Hard knocks that would give them an advantage. Although Rex Ryan is a moron so who knows. I would think most teams would not want cameras in their meeting rooms and practice sessions, but the Jets had no choice. Their owner, coach and fanbase need attention so bad they would sell their souls to get out from the Giants shadow. So it doesn’t shock me one bit they did Hard Knocks. Or if they let some important info slip while doing it.

    @Tibor
Yeah but the bengals never practiced.

  8. habibfromnewdehli says: Sep 11, 2010 8:31 AM

Considering the fact that Cam Cameron’s offense couldn’t score on the COLTS DEFENSE the last 2 years… I really don’t care what he may have learned watching Hard Knocks.
If he doesn’t have more variety with his offense, knowing the defense won’t help him. People say the pressure is on Flacco this year, but I have kept my position that Cameron will be gone this year if the offense doesn’t take some huge steps forward. His play-calling has been very suspect.
Either way, this should be a GREAT game for football fans.

Just a lot of psychological warfare.

This is just posturing on the Ravens part. They have nothing from ‘Hard Knocks’ that’s going to have much of an impact on this game.

Good point. I haven’t seen HKs this season but the Bengals brain trust is probably a little more guarded than the jets arrogant leadership.

  15. BroncoBourque says: Sep 11, 2010 9:05 AM

I don’t think the Ravens gained anything from watching the show, if they even watched it at all. I think they are just saying this to try to get in the Jets’ heads. Does anyone really think the Ravens would learn more about Rex Ryan’s defense through watching hard knocks than they already knew from him being the D coordinator there?

“However, Cameron backed off his comments a bit when asked if he’ll be able to utilize the information Monday night against the Jets.
“I’m not going to say that yet,” Cameron said. “You’d have had me if I’d have said ‘yes’ right there. That was pretty good. He had me, didn’t he, because I could read that one already? So, you can’t say it because I didn’t say it.”

We already know the Jets weakness. It doesn’t matter because the Jets will shut down the Ravens offense,Flacco will struggle,Rice might get his usual dump off pass for a 20 yard gain. Rats start off 0-2. Falling under all that preseason hype.

  22. thegreenelantern says: Sep 11, 2010 9:15 AM

What a terrible and pathetic bluff by Cameron.
What is he going to do?
Put oil under the tires of Kris Jenkins’ golf cart?
    Hide Rex’s M&Ms?
lock the doors to his car so the jets dont put packing peanuts in them?
or maybe he will go back in time to try and kill john conner so he doesnt play on sunday.
This is just ridiculous, Cameron says hes learned more about the Jets defense from watching Hard Knocks and considering the Jets run the SAME defense as the Ravens all he has to do is look at his own teams defense.
and btw, you say the Ravens fall into the latter camp about not allowing cameras into their camp, THEY WERE THE FIRST TEAM ON HARD KNOCKS!

  23. jets are stacked says: Sep 11, 2010 9:18 AM

  29. Clownsfan says: Sep 11, 2010 9:52 AM

The only way the Jets “win big” is if they start givin’ out points for runnin’ their mouths. Does Jet fan really think Shonn is gonna run all over the Ratbirds? I don’t. And even w/ patchwork secondary BAL will be able to handle Sanchez’s wet noodle.

  30. Buck Stallion says: Sep 11, 2010 9:52 AM

The Jets haven’t cornered the market on running their mouths.

  31. HarrisonHits says: Sep 11, 2010 9:55 AM

For a lot of teams they would manage not to give much away. For the team of big mouths and the constant spew of verbal diarrhea it doesn’t surprise me at all that there was plenty of info in there for the other teams.

Things the Ravens picked up from Hard Knocks:
    1. It’s good to catch the Jets without Santonio Holmes.
    2. If you put a stink bomb in the defenses meeting rooms they will fill your car with packing peanuts.
    3. The Roscoe Diner is not a good place to conduct negotiations with the agents of your star Cornerback.
    4. Braylon Edwards will catch 100 balls this season because his beard has its own gravitational pull.
    5. That watching Hard Knocks for tips on beating the Jets is like watching a Ray Comfort video and learning the origin of life.

They went 13-3. Flacco’s rookie year… The ravens generally dismantle teams that are geared to running the ball.

Let me get this straight, Cam Cameron says that he saw things on Hard Knocks that tipped off what the jet defense is going to do, is this the same Cam Cameron who as an offensive coordinator of San Diego, needing a first down to clinche a playoff win against the Pats and after Tomlinson gained either 4 or 6 yards on first down, IGNORED TOMLINSON THE NEXT 2 DOWNS, when Tomlinson was the best rb in the NFL……the game that got Marty ball Shottenheimer fired after a 14-2 season………….the same Cam Cameron who used the 9th pick of the 2007 draft to select Ted Ginn, with players like Willis, Revis and Beason available……….hey Cam, YOU ARE DELUSIONAL

That’s ridiculous… And if anyone has ever seen any of the Hard Knock series, you know they don’t touch on strategy and game planning. If you call game planning “we need to run the f***ing ball,” or “hit some f***ing body”, we can all understand why Cam Cameron is the same guy who wasted Miami’s first round (#8 overall) pick on Teddy Ginn and later proclaimed proudly in a press conference “Miami, Tedd Ginn is a Miami Dolphin” and gave the thumbs up. Need I say more?
    Tibor said it best…
The Bengals were on Hard Knocks last year. The Ravens played them twice and lost twice.
This should definetly be the best game going in the NFL this week. I expect a physical game with a lot of sparks! Just what we need in the NFL. The Jets will play the villain. Bring it!
And to all of those who spend their free time hating on the Jets, you should probably be paying more attention to your own teams situations, especially you Miami Dolfans.

  73. smithopher says: Sep 11, 2010 9:13 PM

there are no secrets in the jets defense…. they’re blitzing from all over, playing man coverage, and daring you to make the play. whats gonna make the game for the ravens isn’t what the offense is able to do as much as what the defense is able to do… they’ll be daring sanchez to win the game, and i think that the ravens secondary without ed reed favors sanchez’ ability to go and win it. dustin keller will be splitting seams for big plays, braylon edwards is finally catching the ball, cotchery has as good hands as anybody. the O line should keep sanchez safe… the jets need to come out with the full house backfield now that they have richardson AND conner. I think the jets could put in some serious work by running a set with LT and two fullbacks. play that power O, pull the left guard and have the left fullback crash down, outside tosses, i like that idea… i like the jets chances without ed reed though, i dont think the front 7 will do enough work to make up for the weak secondary when the jets have the solid O line and fullbacks like they do. I’d love to see the terminator come out and knock ray lewis on his ass a couple times man, that’d be so sick on the isolation. too bad rayray likes hiding behind his buddies, on and off the field.
