Shawne Merriman, Dexter McCluster expected to miss opener

After a misguided late start to training camp, Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman will likely be on the sidelines when his team starts its season late Monday night.

Merriman was listed as doubtful with an Achilles injury in the Chargers-Chiefs injury report released Saturday afternoon.  The one-time Rookie of the Year only practiced for a few days in August before this injury popped up again.  The rest of the Chargers should be ready to go.

This is a huge season for Merriman to prove he’s still a capable NFL starter; his late start to camp and quick injury have him off to a very rough start.  (It also has us wondering where the Chargers will get their pass rush.)

The Chiefs, meanwhile, will probably be without rookie multi-threat Dexter McCluster, who is doubtful with an undisclosed illness.  The team’s best defensive player — linebacker Tamba Hali — is questionable with a foot injury.  Hali was limited in Friday’s practice.  Right tackle Ryan O’Callaghan is questionable with a groin injury.

We are looking forward to seeing what the Chiefs are going to do with McCluster, but it looks like we may have to wait another week.

Seems pretty clear – Merriman owes his success to the juice.
    Hasn’t been the same since.

My sources say it’s a leg injury, maybe the team doctor can use the chunk of leg that fell off C. Weis and graph it on Dexter’s leg then he will be ok!
Brought to you by Mike Wise’s former source…

    Forget RUN DMC.
The football world wants to see what Ryan Matthews can do. He has some big slippers to fill.

    2005- 10 sacks
    2006- 17 sacks
    2007- 12.5 sacks
    2008- 0 sacks
    2009- 4 sacks
43.5 total sacks career. 18.5 sacks prior to suspension, 25 sacks after suspension and in NFL testing program. No positive test since 2006.
To say he hasn’t been the same since he was suspended for juicing is just ignorant. Now, if you were to say he hasn’t been the same since he blew his knee out, and missed all but one game of the 2008 season due to injury, that would be realistic. But don’t let facts get in the way of your opinion.

    I hope McCluster plays.
I know the Chiefs will still suck this year, but at least they have some young players worth watching, and McCluster is one of those.

Screw all of you powder blue pussies with ur overrated team that hasn’t done shit for 4 years. You keep falling apart since Marty left and the chiefs are rebuilding. Run dmc may be out but Charles and jones will be the highlight. not your Ryan” give me a tampon I’m bleeding” Matthews. The only player on ur team that is good is that pumpkin pie hair cut freak rivers. Don’t even get me started on aj’s whipped dog norv turner. Chargers are an absolute bust this year. Bank on it.

Let’s hope dexter plays, he’s going to be an integral piece of the kc offense this year, as far as San diego fans and thier new back
San diego is expecting this rookie to be as good as LT in top form , he’s going to be average at best..
    and that’s in two years..
    Kansas city 24
    San diego. 17
Norv is notorious for slow starts and this year will be the same..

    East Of Eden 6 – you’re a moron….
lanjoith- you’re an even bigger moron….
History shows the Chargers always start slow. The Chiefs will win this game with or without Dexter. Rivers will be whining and crying by halftime. Chargers will finish second in the division under the Chiefs.
    Deal with it Dolts (fans).
The times they are a changing.

Roscoe..the Chargers haven’t done anything in the past 4 years??? Well let’s see they won the AFC West in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009. Won some playoff games in those years, made it to the AFC Championship game only to lose to the UNDEFEATED Patriots with no L.T. and Rivers on one leg, and still came close to winning. How is that not doing anything. What have the Chiefs done in those 4 years???? Nothing. So STFU.

    Really? Really?
Look, if you hate the Chargers, you hate the Chargers. They’ve blown it in the playoffs the last 4 years. But to say they haven’t done shit in the last 4 years is just ignorant nonsense.
They’ve won the division the last 4 years. 5 of 6…who’s counting. Sure, the division is littered with disease. But, you’re obviously a Chiefs homer, and your team is in it. What the hell does that make you?
I bet your the type that doesn’t shower, yet runs around telling people they smell bad. You are draped in douche-baggery.

Oh, and I forgot to comment on the Mathews comment. First of all, that’s one “t” in Mathews. I suppose the fact that he is going in the 1st Round in a high majority of FF drafts means nothing.
Before McCluster. Before Jones. Before Charles.
Chargers Power Rankings in the 5-8 range. Chiefs in the 24-28.
But hey, the rest of the country must be f***ing dumb. You know.

    @ chargers-super tool
    @Jamarcus leaf
Yeah you vaginal dischargers fans are so clueless! You won the division the last for years. Every other team in the afc west has been in the tank. It was your time to get to the superbowl remember? What did you do? That bolt of lightning turned in to static cling on the other teams jock strap. Your boy LT is atva real team now going for a ring he should have already! Don’t give me any excuses for Ryan matttttttttthews either. He went in the first rd…. Big deal we all know how good you guys have it with first rounders. Ryan leaf comes to mind. We will see how the carnage AJ threw upon you works out this Monday night.
    Let the games begin

It’s great to see that literacy is alive and well. Did your mother have any intelligent children that survived child birth?
