Shawne Merriman, Dexter McCluster expected to miss opener

After a misguided late start to training camp, Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman will likely be on the sidelines when his team starts its season late Monday night.

Merriman was listed as doubtful with an Achilles injury in the Chargers-Chiefs injury report released Saturday afternoon. The one-time Rookie of the Year only practiced for a few days in August before this injury popped up again. The rest of the Chargers should be ready to go.

This is a huge season for Merriman to prove he’s still a capable NFL starter; his late start to camp and quick injury have him off to a very rough start. (It also has us wondering where the Chargers will get their pass rush.)

The Chiefs, meanwhile, will probably be without rookie multi-threat Dexter McCluster, who is doubtful with an undisclosed illness. The team’s best defensive player -- linebacker Tamba Hali -- is questionable with a foot injury. Hali was limited in Friday’s practice. Right tackle Ryan O’Callaghan is questionable with a groin injury.

We are looking forward to seeing what the Chiefs are going to do with McCluster, but it looks like we may have to wait another week.
