Alex Barron helps Redskins hold on to win

A sloppy, mistake-filled game by the Cowboys offense finished appropriately.

The Redskins beat the Cowboys 13-7 Sunday after Dallas right tackle Alex Barron was called for a holding penalty on the game’s final play, nullifying a would-be game-winning 11-yard touchdown throw to Roy Williams.

“I’ve never seen that happen,” Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said after the game.

Before the final snap, the Cowboys looked thoroughly confused about what they were doing even though they had just taken a timeout. But Romo made a great play to avoid the pass rush and find Williams for the apparent victory.

Of course, Romo probably wouldn’t have avoided the pass rush unless Barron put a sleeper hold on Redskins linebacker Brian Orakpo. Give Orakpo a gameball and give Romo some credit for leading a clutch final drive.

Barron will get crucified from coast to coast, but the Cowboys made boneheaded mistakes the whole game. Washington’s only touchdown came on a DeAngelo Hall fumble recovery on the final play of the first half.

Phillips will also get the blame for the loss. But his defense played outstanding, giving up just six points. Dallas moved the ball far more easily than Washington, but coordinator Jason Garrett’s offense continued to play undisciplined football. The Cowboys had 12 penalties in the game.

Now we’ll just have to wait to find out if Barron is around next week to make a few more.
