In an interview with The Early Show on CBS, Ines Sainz of TV Azteca said that she does not plan to sue the Jets or the NFL for the events that transpired on Saturday at the team facility, according to Bob Glauber of Newsday.
Some think that ends the story. It doesn’t.
For starters, Sainz would have had a hard time suing the Jets, even if she had wanted to sue the Jets. There’s no evidence that anything legally actionable occurred in the locker room or on the practice field. Moreover, Sainz already has said and done enough to give any lawyer worth his or her law degree ammunition for an hour or so of cross-examination that would prove she welcomed the conduct, that she arguably invited it, and that she was neither threatened nor harassed by it.
As we pointed out last night, the Jets need to be concerned not about this reporter but the next one -- and about other reporters who may be offended by witnessing inappropriate, but consensual, interactions between players and a reporter.
Thus, the investigation will continue, with the Jets players spending part of Tuesday giving statements to lawyers aimed at ensuring not only that the team won’t be sued now, but that the team won’t be sued in the future.
