Draft picks are only good if you know how to use them.

Um…the point he was making in the article was that they can trade VJ to the Rams or some other crappy team to piss him off. But that’s dumb, because no team that VJ doesn’t want will want VJ. He won’t sign an extension and they’ll essentially be paying a high draft pick for 10-12 games of one season.
I seriously doubt anyone is willing to do that, so it looks like the Chargers can a) trade him where he wants and get something in return, or b) let him sit out the season and get almost nothing in return. And you’ve got to think that the Chargers, who had super bowl aspirations until a few weeks ago, will want to get something in return for throwing their season away.

I mean, if the Chargers want him, pay him what he wants because he’s the number one guy. If not, trade him and don’t come up with these ridiculous demands where the team won’t budge. AJ Smith has gotta stop thinking everything can go his way. Ever since this guy’s beef with Schotty got him (Schottenheimer) fired, which I thought was insane especially coming off of a 14-2 record and winning the division title, plus home field, I knew this team was gonna have issues. Watching that game against the Chiefs, I knew Jackson and McNeill’s absence would be felt. Antonio Gates is a hell of a talent, but he’s not a receiver, but a tight end. Floyd and Naanee are cool but they’re number one receivers on that team and V-Jax is. I would say he’s worth a 2nd or 3rd, but pay him or move on and trade him to somewhere else instead of keeping him hostage.

@ Boltsfan. Nice rant but totally offbase. I do understand what the R stands for. Restricted means that the team gets compensated if the player leaves. I have been one of the most vocal supporters of the Chargers’ FO on this issue. VJ is a stupid, arrogant troublemaker that believes he is worth a king’s ransom. He can’t demand a huge contract because of his “talent” and then expect the Chargers to accept scrub level compensation. My question was about limiting his ability to talk to other teams, not that the Chargers should not control the level of acceptable compensation.

I wish the Chargers could have found a way to keep Jackson, but he’s simply asking too much, and the fact that no other team stepped in to meet his demands proves that point.
Also, the dude has two DUI convictions. If he gets a third, the NFL will suspend him for a year. What team owner wants to take that risk?
And if they do take the risk, they’ll be paying him while he sits out until the end of October. He hasn’t attended a single OTA, practice or pre-season game. What kind of shape is he in? Is he still the same VJ he was last year? Can he play at that level without a Philip Rivers?
Lastly, there’s a strong possibility that any team that picks him now won’t get to use him much next year either, depending on the lockout situation. VJ is really screwing himself. His stock has dropped faster than the economy under Obama.

That said, after their Week 1 performance, it wouldn’t surprise me if AJ tries to squat on Vincent and forces Vincent to eventually come into the fold. They need a WR to take charge, to open space up for Antonio Gates, otherwise the passing game will be inconsistent, rendering their offense ineffective. I don’t see another WR they could make a move for right now.

AJ is a smart man..Everyone who thinks he is a dick, just get upset because he doesnt wheel and deal and make out of this world trades. He builds through the draft and has tons of patience and a poker face… Look at that trade of Cromartie to The Jets.. Dude had the most penalties out of everyone,, Just like the Cromartie we know… AJ knew what he was doing then, and he knows what he is doing now.. LT, his production failed, so he let him go. Matthews will be dominate, That game against the chiefs was his first game as a pro, and it was raining,. The weather played a huge factor in this game.
You will see Floyd, Nanee, Gates, Crayton, and even Buster Davis produce as if Jackson was never part of this team.. I just want them to sign McNeal now just to slap VJ in the face!!!!..

FinFan, you don’t understand what the “R” stands for in RFA then. He is RESTRICTED. Putting the R in front of FA is tantamount to an oxymoron. He is really not a FREE agent at all.
Some of the people in here just can’t stand the fact that team ownership/management has far more power than the players who are merely EMPLOYEES. Get over it. Management is superior. If you don’t like it, pony up the money and BUY a business and put your OWN capital at risk. THEN whine to me about what is fair and equitable.

Hey baronzeus, control and benefit are different. Jackson has the most to GAIN if he accepts a contract extension from another team. That fact means he also has the most to LOSE if they don’t let him. Therefore, they have all the control. They lose him for the season for sitting out, or if they trade him.

Two schools of thought:
Chargers do nothing with him this year and receive a potential 3rd Round pick when VJerk walks, as they’ve done many times before.
Chargers pick VJerk’s potential suitors to get the best deal and/or screw with him by sending him to an NFL Siberia to teach him a lesson. Spiteful, but possible.
Or accommodate VJerk by sending him to the NFL town which brews or distills his favorite alcohol.
