Mike Singletary is done talking about "the Yahoo deal"

NFL_singletary2_250.jpg49ers coach Mike Singletary appeared on KPIX in San Francisco on Thursday for an interview with Dennis O’Donnell.

And Singletary wasn’t happy with the decision of O’Donnell to ask about a Yahoo! Sports report that the 49ers are losing faith in offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye.  (Singletary seemed to be miffed because he had talked about the issue at a press conference earlier in the day.)

We can’t really do the thing justice by writing about it; you need to see it to appreciate it.

Here are our favorite quotes:

1.  “Don’t base an entire man’s career on a dad-gum Yahoo commercial.”

2.  Asked about trying to stop quarterback Drew Brees, Singletary cut off the question.  “We will not try to stop Drew Brees.  We will stop Drew Brees.  Next question.”

3.  Asked about trying to move the ball against the Saints, Singletary again cut off the question.  “We will not try to move the ball against the New Orleans defense.  We will move the ball and we will score.”

It’s possible that the 49ers are more entertaining when they’re not playing a game.  Then again, Monday night’s game against the Saints should be pretty dad-gum entertaining.

What’s the difference between what Singletary is saying here as to what Rex Ryan says everyday? Oh sorry, Florio can’t stand Rex. We don’t know yet where he stands on Singletary.

  6. CanadianVikingFan says: Sep 17, 2010 6:56 AM

He definately sounds like he is going to beat someone up if his team doesn’t start winning.

lol nice to see not everyone wants to polish the knobs of the Yahoo Sportswriters like Florio wants to.
Must be a handsome dude over there because Florio seems to be losing his jaded, bitter man-crush on Favre.

Singletary is just expressing the frustration and contempt that the majority of us have for the media and their banality (look it up meatheads)

  12. thats_what_she_said says: Sep 17, 2010 7:38 AM

What do u expect him to say?
He’s gonna stand by his OC. Definite wakeup call with an upset loss in Seattle. The team hasn’t done too well in Seattle overall.
Any fool should know that when it comes to division games – the competition is completely different. The teams understand one another for the most part – and the favourite isn’t a lock to win it all the time.
Back when san fran was 2-14, they still swept a much more talented Cardinals team. We swept the Card’s last year too – but guess what?? NEVER made the playoffs.
It’s a crucial game like any other, but again – anything can happen. The Bucs beat the Saints last year, the Bills aaaaaaaaaaalmost beat the pats in their opener last year, the Lions shoulda won last week, and the cheifs took out the chargers..
It’s ONE game – though improtant – i’m glad it’s week 1 and not mid season.

Back to the Brees question – what’s he gonna say? “oh, we are going to sit back and relax as he passes for 600 yards, and we don’t plan to move the ball at all”..
Seems like any news from the 49ers – is always going to draw some sorta criticism from idiot’s like Joe Toronto, and Steelers Rule..
Enjoy riding the bandwagon’s schlong – See how much smack you talk when you’re teams are struggling.

  20. realitypolice says: Sep 17, 2010 8:18 AM

This guy is horribly overmatched. Can’t scream your problems away, Mikey. Can’t stare bug eyed at your opponents and expect them to melt like they did when you were a player.
You’re finding out why so many former great NFL players top out at position coach, and why the ones who make it struggle so much. Their talents don’t translate and their egos don’t let them adapt.
What works with a small group of players who play the same position you did and hang on your every word doesn’t work when trying to lead an entire organization.

I half expected to hear…”Jimmy Raye is who I thought he was”…”If you want to re-crown their a$$…re-crown’em”….
Hopefully, they don’t “lettem off the hook” on MNF.

    I can hardly wait….

I admire this. Though it probably won’t happen. And it’ll probably fuel Brees to go off.
I remember the last time an opposing team said something like this about the Saints. Green Bay talked up their 2nd-best pass defense. Brees just said “My best will beat their best”. Result? 51-29 victory on MNF in 2008.

I love Samurai Mike’s confidence. He can be a great motivator but he needs to get a handle on actually coaching his team and he needs to stress situational football. He may be out of his depth but he will always be entertaining. There are some nuggets of greatness sandwiched in between those times when you might think there is an empty bed in the mental ward come lights out.

  33. SSgtLMJ says: Sep 17, 2010 9:53 AM

Yeah Mike, your outstanding corners are really gonna stick it to Brees huh? This is laughable and the score will be too…Saints 42 Niners 13.

What do u expect him to say?
Oh, I don’t know, maybe something like 30 other head coaches might say (Rex Ryan excluded). Something that showed confidence in his team without disrespecting the opposition.
Something that showed he understood that part of being head coach is being the face of the franchise, and making wild proclamations while looking like your head is about to explode off your shoulders may not be as beneficial to your franchise as a whole as you would like.
People expect and excuse behavior like this out of players. Someone needs to remind Mike that he isn’t one anymore.

  35. Drat says: Sep 17, 2010 9:56 AM

I believe it was “dang-gum” not “dad-gum.” Come on! These oddball phrases are vastly important and you must transcribe them correctly!!
I picked the 49ers to finish last in the worst division in football because of Singletary. Yes, below the Rams. The Seahawks. A team quarterbacked by Anderson. Singletary is just bad news as a coach. He’s a nutjob. Not that i’d say that to his face. The media were all in a swarm that the 49ers would be good this year. Well, sit back and watch and see who’s right. Popcorn, baby.

  36. Joemamma says: Sep 17, 2010 10:16 AM

he is supposed to say what any normal coach would say other then Rex Ryan
“We have a great game plan to attack the saints and Drew Brees. He is a phenomenol QB and it should be a great game. I have all the confidence that our defense will come out on top”
    anything else is plain stupid

  37. Guccigucciland says: Sep 17, 2010 10:18 AM

Everybody is so dramatic it was one game get over it the 49ers will still win the div. At 9-7 mark my f*ckin words and i’m not even a 9er fan but seriously stfu it to early they do the same thing every year start off 2-4 or -1-5 and always manage to go around 500. But this year there no other competition in the div. So they got it on lock easy!!!!!! Go texans

  38. purpleguy says: Sep 17, 2010 10:27 AM

Jason Cole of Yahoo sure stirs up a lot of trouble with teams from “unamed sources”. He did this same thing with the Vikings. I’d be suprised if he gets much inside access in the future the way he keeps helping insiders with axes to grind stab these teams in their collective backs.

  39. BREES has a BUSH says: Sep 17, 2010 10:30 AM

So funny how we go from loved to hated in just one year because we’re the champs (thats right viking fans, gave u a rematch and you still couldn’t beat us… no excuses please). Its a very different feeling being on the throne than trying to get to it. Singletary….tisk tisk ask the Packers about calling out Brees or even ask Antrell Rolle about calling out Brees (he made the Cards start pulling their players to avoid injury in a PLAYOFF GAME). Im not saying u should sit there and say Brees is gunna kill us and we dont have a shot…for your teams sake, for your job sake you shouldve taken the high road and said “We’ve been working hard in practice and game film and we’re going to go out and execute and hopefully get our first win against the Champs.” but no you didnt say that did you mikey….. Remember Breesus’ best will beat the ever living S#!T out of your best. Game over before it begins!….. Rest of the teams on our schedule please take note of this bone head and do the exact opposite and you might have a chance. p.s. Alex Smith is your quarterback…these are facts!

    I’m Samurai Mike I stop’em cold.
Part of the defense, big and bold,
I’ve been jammin’ for quite a while,
Doin’ what’s right and settin’ the style,
Give me a chance, I’ll rock you good,
    Nobody messin’ in my neighborhood.
I didn’t come here lookin’ for trouble,
I just came to do The Super Bowl Shuffle

  41. bergthe1st says: Sep 17, 2010 10:50 AM

It’s reminiscent of when Singletary’s ex-coach, Mike Ditka, guaranteed that the Saints needed only to draft Ricky Williams and they’d go straight to the SuperBowl.
Guarantees are easy when you know you’re getting fired anyway.

  42. Jack Acid says: Sep 17, 2010 10:52 AM

I gotta side with Samurai on this one.
Dude spent all day talking to the press about the Yahoo leak. He addressed the late playcalls issue and his solution at his Monday presser.
The man doesn’t like repeating himself, period.
But I will say, he does need to learn how to keep his cool for interviews. He has to expect similar lines of questioning regardless of who else he has spoken to.
But I still love his no-nonsense approach. We’ll find out on Monday what he can really get done in 8 days.

  43. StevieMo says: Sep 17, 2010 10:52 AM

Singletary is a horse’s ass, and obviously a control freak. As I have said since day one, he is unqualified to be an NFL head coach.
I used to like the 49ers, but now it’s fun to anticipate Singletary’s numerous meltdowns, so I can’t help but root for them to lose. Hey, this is America; we like fireworks (think 4th of July).
He forgot to mention that while Raye has been in the league for 33 years, never once has his team finished higher than 13th on offense with him as an OC. He’s a total slapdick, and slapdick Singletary hired him on a whim after several others turned his control-freak-ass down.
    Just a goofy organization, period.

  44. FumbleNuts says: Sep 17, 2010 10:54 AM

“We will not try to move the ball against the New Orleans defense. We will move the ball and we will score.”
Sounds like bulletin board material for the Saints.
Brees is going to have a STELLAR game on Monday Night Football.
    Mark that down!

  45. Vee says: Sep 17, 2010 11:10 AM

Gotta love the guy; old school, tough, smart, straight up, all of that.
But man, taunting Drew Brees and the reigning SuperBowl Champs?
Not very smart – espcecially when his team hasn’t won or proven anything to anybody.

  46. JSpicoli says: Sep 17, 2010 11:12 AM

    Soooooooo in over his head.

  47. RaiderChile says: Sep 17, 2010 11:21 AM

The Saints are going to destroy the Whiners Monday! Dismantle the Whiner fan base and the overrate horrible corporate cheerleader of a coach.
Singletary is not a head coach and this interview is proof. Proof that he doesn’t have the experience too deal with his emotions on camera. This team, like the Raiders, need new ownership and coaches.
Both are crap and we’ll see Smith, white Russell, get cut up again. He’s no NFL QB and that was figured out 2-3 years ago. At least Davis had the balls to get rid of Russell. Jed York is in over his head. He’s not even 30 yo and is expected to run this team because his uncle ran the team?
PAthetic! Whiners get ready to see your team lose BIG TIME. Jerry Rice jersey retirement will help ease the pain of another loss!

  49. FriarBob says: Sep 17, 2010 11:55 AM

I don’t really know if he’s any good as a coach. This doesn’t seem to suggest that he is, but I’ve seen other things that suggest otherwise as well.
But either way, as a sound-bite, this guy is AWESOME.
