Your Friday afternoon fine round up

NFL players do the darndest things each week on gameday.  And then the league takes money away from them for it.  Here’s a quick roundup of this week’s player fines:

1. Vikings right tackle Phil Loadholdt was fined $10,000 for two unnecessary roughness violations, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.  He grabbed his opponent by the facemask on two separate plays.

2. Schefter also says that Cowboys defensive tackle Jay Ratliff was fined $5,000 for going after Donovan McNabb’s knee.

3. From Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun-Times: Brian Urlacher was fined $5,000 for unnecessary roughness, for a block in the back on back during a fumble recovery.

4. Lindsay Jones of the Denver Post: Broncos defensive Ryan McBean has been fined $5,000 by the league for a facemask penalty on Maurice Jones-Drew.

5. Texans running back Arian Foster and cornerback Glover Quin were both fined $5,000 for unnecessary roughness penalties, according to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle.  You don’t see many running backs get these; Foster grabbed a facemask at the end of a run.

6. From Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com: Patriots safety Patrick Chung has been fined $5,000 for a late hit.

7. From Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger: Panthers safety Sherrod Martin got fined $5,000 for what Giants tight end Travis Beckum called a dirtbag move.

Florio will reportedly not be fined for the PFT-on-PFT crime he committed against me on WEEI this afternoon.

Outstanding. Funniest thing I’ve read on this site all day!

  3. Ratliff wasnt going after McNabbs knee and everybody knows it. Yes, he ended up at DMs knee.
I understand protecting the QB but come on. Jay doesnt play dirty.

  4. Ratliff was fined for “going after McNabb’s knee”. Was he supposed to go before it?
He wasnt going after DM’s knee.

  5. On the play Foster was fined for, the commenters went on and on about how it’s legal for a RB to stiff arm a tackler by pushing on his facemask. He didn’t get a flag so why the fine? Sounds fubar to me.

  6. AJ Hawk and Clay Matthews (the 3rd no less) were both fined $100,000 for impersonating a female.
Grabbing a facemask brings a 5G fine but grabbing a jersey or arm gets charles woodson a MVP…..go figure!!

  7. Have always been curious as to why a ball carrier can put his hands on a defensive players facemask and in some cases grab the facemask but never get a flag

If this was an ESPN issue Florio would be all over it.

  9. Ryan McBean is fined $5000.00 from the league.
The Broncos should fine him $100,000.00 for the two STUPID, IDIOTIC, COMPLETELY MINDLESS face mask penalties in a row that aided in a touchdown drive. Two of the worst plays in the game!

    …………………….
This weeks Packer excuse for losing to the Vikings.

  11. You freaking idiots…
…who have nothing better to do than to post “typical dirty Viking player.”
Phil Loadholdt is not “dirty”. He’s over-matched, inexperienced and was clearly holding to avoid getting beat.
Nothing “dirty” about it. Offensive linemen holding happens about every play in the NFL.
    Dolts….

  12. redbeardxxv,
    F. Adams was an offensive lineman not a NT. You proably want to be correc if you’re trying to be funny or something.

  13. Running backs are allowed to TOUCH the facemask to stiff-arm, however if you wrap one finger around the mask it’s a penalty/fine. You can damn near punch the guy in the facemask as long as it’s completely open-handed. At least that’s what our coaches always drilled into us backs…

  14. Of course the Vikings fine was posted first…..PFT staff knows they will get a ton of comments about it by all the fudgePackerbackers!

  15. (“Ratliff was fined for “going after McNabb’s knee”. Was he supposed to go before it?

It’s the Tom Brady rule, they fine and flag any player who goes to the ground and goes after the knee and he did do that without being pushed into the knee, even being a Redskin fan i know Ratliff isnt a dirty player, he’s great, i dont like this rule anyway, but when you have this rule, you have to enforce it.

  16. Unless you have personal experience as a lineman, you probably should keep your mouth shut about Loadholdt. I ended up with my hand INSIDE a guys facemask once. Your punching and pushing and shoving and dropping and raising your pads…. Unless he grabbed it with a full hand and pulled the guy down to the ground with it, it was likely an accident. It is illegal and fined not because it appeared intentional, but to keep players from doing it intentionally.
Besides, if you have any experience in the trenches, you know better than to risk getting your fingers caught in someones facemask. You’ll lose them.

Or probably because it happened in the FIRST game of the season, moron.

  18. Sherrod Martin’s hit was shoulder pad-to-shoulder pad..clean it..Eli shouldent have throw a ball of a free play to a vulnerable reciever..the Giants have a bunch a girls on their team..
