I don’t even understand how it gets this far. I see this star college athletes on T.V. and you see them driving a brand new Cadillac Escalade. They don’t have a job, and supposedly they can’t take any money, and their family is broke. Doesn’t anyone ever ask the question “Who’s paying for that thing?” It’s not rocket science, if someone makes less money than a Mcdonalds employee and drives a car or lives in a house that only someone making over 100,000 a year can afford than it’s obvious they’re taking money.
I don’t know if players should be allowed to take money but it looks to me that the NCAA is more interested in making sure the players pretend they don’t take money so they can say that they have upheld their sanctimonious rules, than in actually resolving the issue through a little proactivity and common sense.

Carroll and Sarkisian knew Bush was on the take, and the only real surprise is that other players haven’t yet been exposed. That is, unless they didn’t know Bush’s parents were living someplace else than when they started recruiting him. They turned a blind eye, and did it for the sake of winning ballgames. Which I don’t entirely blame them. Their livelihoods depend on it. The boosters, alumni and sports talk radio hosts demand they win. You bet they all know, despite what any “erasure from records” occurs, Bush won that trophy and USC won a national title in 2004. If Carroll finds out about Bush’s antics, what’s he going to do? Suspend his meal ticket?
I do think it’s interesting people talk about NFL careers as if they are guaranteed for college athletes. The NFLPA says only 310 college players out of 9,000 make it to an NFL roster. Less than 2.5%.

Don’t give me that BS bruised death. Injurys have been present in sports from the beginning. Its todays youth that feel entitled by agents, espn, etc that feel they deserve more than an oppurtunity given to them to succeed with their minds. I got my education in war. Guess how often my peers got injured there. Please. Such bs.

I can not agree more Florida Packer. I would not consider myself poor when I was in college but offering a kid a good deal of money (poor or Not) would be very hard to refuse. He could have all the talent in the world but if he is hurt then financial stability via football is not a given. To tell you the truth if one is poor then it would be nuts to NOT take the money.
Also I agree…Cheating does not fit hear as it did not give him or his team a competitive advantage……

If the NCAA investigated every Heisman winner the last 20 years……Bush would have plenty of company as far as high profile players that have taken gifts or money. His mistake was not paying these two goons the money they thought they were owed back and he obviously has paid the price. I am a huge Notre Dame fan and hate USC, but I hope Reggie made a clone of his Heisman and is displaying it proudly on his mantle. He was the best college football player in the nation in 2005, on the best team in the nation. His taking of $ to help his poor family did not add or detract from any competition on the field.

Here’s the thing. This all came out because Reggie did not want to sign with the marketing firm who gave him the money. The agent asked for the money to be repaid. Bush said no. Seems like he should have just paid the 200k or whatever and let everyone save some embarassment. So no character. and cheap.

Ummm What proof do we have that Reggie ever acepted money in the first place. By the way, you guys are too hard on Jayy. I played football in school on a scholarship. Now, I don’t know what you guys know about the rules but you are not permitted to work, and you are limited to what you are allowed to do outside of football if your on a scholarship. Now, I’m not going to say that the kid was poor, or nothing like that. I don’t agree with what he did or is being accused of doing, however being in that situation I can see why he did it…if in fact he did. What gets me is that the same people who are constantly talking about how wrong or immoral his actions were; are the same hypocrites who have extra marital affairs, beat their wives, steal from work, lie on their taxes, steal from the government etc. I never seen so many perfect people in my life. It is sickening. I agree that if he is guilty he should have some kind of penalty. (his Heisman though? really?) So what punishment is being done to the vultures that gave him the money? Why do the kids at USC have to suffer? They were in high school when all of this madness was going on. The NCAA really need to take a deeper look into this issue.

The ONLY way to stop college players from taking money is to penalize the parties involved – the player, and the person giving the money. How is penalizing the school gonna do anything??? Reggie Bush couldn’t give a crap about USC – he’s not there, he’s making millions in the NFL. The only way I see to stop it is to have the player lose his NFL eligibility for a time.
