Vincent Jackson has at least one suitor, if the Chargers will pull the trigger

If the Chargers trade receiver Vincent Jackson by Wednesday, he’ll miss only four total games in his new city.  After Wednesday, the number goes back to six.

The four-game window has helped return the process to where it was two Saturdays ago.  Per a league source, at least one team has worked out a deal with Jackson; the question becomes whether the Chargers can agree to the terms of a trade.

The thinking is that the Chargers will wait until the Week Two games have been played, given the possibility that a high-end wideout on a contending team pops an ACL on Sunday afternoon, Sunday night, or Monday night.  If that happens, the freshly-injured player’s team could jump into the bidding.

The broader question remains whether the Chargers want to trade Jackson.  The team could opt instead to squat on his rights and hope that the current provision in the CBA that would make him a restricted free agent in 2011 survives the negotiation process.  (The thinking is that it won’t.)  Alternatively, the Chargers could let Jackson leave as an unrestricted free agent in 2011, and they could collect as much as a third-round compensatory draft pick in 2012.

The team currently linked most strongly to Jackson is the Vikings.  The Seahawks and the Rams also have been mentioned in the past.  Jackson worked out in the offseason with Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb.

I’m still waiting for Commissioner Goodall to step in and demand that San Diego trade Jackson (at a loss) the way he did with the Green Bay vs Brett Favre situation 2 years ago. After all he set a precedent for meddling in team affairs, why stop now….

Jackson to Redskins would be huge…

  5. Calir says: Sep 18, 2010 1:24 PM

I’m just not sure the Redskins need another headache. Shanny is trying to get rid of those type of players. Childress is desperate. Doubt Jackson wants to go to a bad Rams team with a rookie QB. Kudo’s to the Chargers for showing the rest of their roster who is in charge.

We would love a #2 or #3 from the Rams, at the VERY top of the draft for that round.

“Per a league source, at least one team has worked out a deal with Jackson; the question becomes whether the Chargers can agree to the terms of a trade.” Sorry, since when can a player agree to terms before the team which holds his rights OK the deal? Should be the team agrees to the trade then the player and his agent negotiate terms of a new contract, or is there something missing here?

  16. Ridnaway says: Sep 18, 2010 1:48 PM

I can envision Chilly pulling V-Jax back to Minnesota in a rickshaw, stopping along the way just long enough to shine his shoes and give him a pedicure perhaps.

Getting McNabb a target like Jackson makes those who said Redskins will make the playoffs look even smarter than the Week 1 win over Dallas or a Week 2 win over Houston.

The Queens will try and get him. Only to waste a grest deal of money on an unknown commodity. No Training Camp, OTA’s, etc. Won’t be in shape until week 12, IMHO. Fredo will be on IR by that time. Good Luck you pathetic losers. Keep chasing that rainbow. You will notice it will turn into a big storm.

You are giving J.A. Smith far too much credit to think of something like that.

  22. Hauschild says: Sep 18, 2010 1:59 PM

While the Vikings have been pretty darned checked-out in the overpaying department the last few years and besides Berrian, generally have struck gold in the free agent market: J Allen. P Williams. R. Longwell A. Winfield B. Leber S. Hutchinson- just to name a few to prevent HillyBilly Nation from crying foul – Sunday’s game against Miami might be a good indicator of whether Vikings brass feels compelled to make a move. The upside is a big receiver that could produce, the downside is a suspect individual who will take half the season just to get comfortable in the offense.
I think it is a waste of money, unless Rice is out for the year, which doesn’t appear to be the case. It is simply going to take time for the Vikings offense to find itself without Rice, which will make the offense that much more dominant once Rice returns, and the post-season ensues. I doubt any NFC team finishes above 11-5, 12-4 at the max, so if Minnesota struggles the first half of the season, they will surprise down the stretch and peak at the right moment.

  23. Nosredna says: Sep 18, 2010 2:00 PM

Would be nice if Cornflorio and Rosenthal could get their stories straight. Florio constantly thinks the Vikings are the number one team, Rosenthal based on last nights post doesn’t.
As I said last night in the comment someone at PFT refused to approve….pick a lie and stick to it at least!

  36. Caldon says: Sep 18, 2010 4:12 PM

    According to NFL.com
“Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. ”
Yeah, with no playing time this year, no post season honors and only semi salary, not to mention that they could not pick up a free agent better then him, I think you are wrong about them trying to hold out for a compensatory pick since they would very very likely get a much better pick just trading him.

  37. BigFatDog says: Sep 18, 2010 4:17 PM

Hey Florio, the Chargers have one other possible option with VJ. They could franchise him at end of season and then trade him, like NE did with Cassell. With Dombrowski playing so well, McNeill might not be worth franchising next offseason, so San Diego could opt to retain VJ’s rights one more year anyway with the tag.

  38. TheBaySay says: Sep 18, 2010 4:27 PM

People need to stop saying, “if the Chargers will pull the trigger.” It’s not up to the Chargers. It’s on the other team and Jackson to work out a decent deal for the Chargers. Why would AJ Smith deal the guy if he’s not going to get something good in return?

  42. Mrsteve says: Sep 18, 2010 5:21 PM

jackson + jackson = rams super bowl

  44. JimmySmith says: Sep 18, 2010 5:27 PM

No doubt the Vikings are desperate, they already proven that with their behavior toward Favre.
The Chargers should be able to bend them over the barrel and just ram it where the sun doesn’t shine. But the cross dressing coach and half the fan base is already used to that and loves it so look for the deal to be done by Monday morning so the press has something else to write about other than their 0-2 start.

  45. Shamrock says: Sep 18, 2010 5:28 PM

“The thinking is that it won’t” revert for RFA holdouts to become RFA’s again in 2011 is purely Florio’s twisted NFLPA homeristic viewpoint.
Mike, you used to be an impartial (and good) source for contract, labor and CBA issues. Lately, your “takes” are simply ignorant of basic negotiation tactics.

Not to mention that you are cheering for a bunch of guys who are apparently planning on performing oral acts on an old man in the same breath that you let us in on your personal knowledge of what certain Vikings apparently did to you…..

Did you help get Lebron in town too?

  47. VonClausewitz says: Sep 18, 2010 5:48 PM

The only thing about this situation that annoys me is the thought that someone will have to have contact with that blowhard AJ Smith in order to make the trade. Especially when everyone knows that all you need to do to pick up a Chargers player is wait until they hit free agency – sure as hell they ain’t going back to San Diego. On the other hand, trading with AJ will give you an opportunity to dump some of the frontrunning gritless wonders AJ seems to covet so much.
    Go Titans

  48. ejmat says: Sep 18, 2010 6:02 PM

I say the Vikings trade Berrian and McKinnie for Jackson and Marcus McNeil.

  49. scrapdawg12 says: Sep 18, 2010 6:56 PM

If I am the Chargers, my main goal is to screw this guy over like he is doing his teammates at this point. He has no leverage. He is under contract. I don’t care if you make 10 dollars or 10 million, your still under contract and honor that contract you signed. Chargers did the right thing by lowering his tender value since he didn’t sign by the deadline. I would make Vincent Jackson stay in San Diego and after this season, franchise him or let him walk. We don’t know what Vincent has been doing while his team is playing. My best guess is he is drinking his A** off.

As the day in college football winds down I come to PFT to read the wishful drivel of Viking fans. Even if the trade for Jackson they’ll find a way to lose because they always do. They are a joke of an organization and their fans are pathetic. They have been making excuses for 50 years and will create new ones when they lose this year. I hope they do get him because I want to know what this years excuse will be. Stay tuned for laughter………..
