Big start for Frank Gore, but Saints lead 49ers

San Francisco running back Frank Gore is off to a big start tonight, but the 49ers still trail the Saints in the second quarter.

Gore caught a swing pass and took it 12 yards for a touchdown to cut the 49ers’ lead to 9-7. Gore also has 35 yards on eight carries on the ground.

But the Saints also got a touchdown catch from a running back, as Drew Brees hit Reggie Bush for six yards in the first quarter.

The ugliest moment of the game came courtesy of 49ers center David Baas, who had an absolutely horrendous shotgun snap that went over Alex Smith’s head and into the end zone, where Smith had no choice but to bat it out of bounds for a safety. Those two points are the difference in the game right now.

UPDATE: A San Francisco fumble deep in New Orleans territory helped the Saints keep the 9-7 lead at halftime.
